You will find wonderful portrayals of the heart, mind and soul of faith and come to appreciate these aspects of yourself. Elaine Voci gives us the 12 stories of women who have had life-changing experiences plus her own story during the year it took to complete the book. Whether facing terminal illnesses, the loss of a hard-won career or the pursuit of a dream that seems unreachable, these women found a source of faith and courage within themselves that they did not always trust or believe they had. Each called upon inner resources, friendships with other women, scriptural passages and other inspiring words to not only endure, but to conquer fear and grow stronger. Book Synopsis Rockstar Games and American History by : Esther Wright
Download or read book Rockstar Games and American History written by Esther Wright and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two decades, Rockstar Games have been making games that interrogate and represent the idea of America, past and present. Commercially successful, fan-beloved, and a frequent source of media attention, Rockstar’s franchises are positioned as not only game-changing, ground-breaking interventions in the games industry, but also as critical, cultural histories on America and its excesses. But what does Rockstar’s version of American history look like, and how is it communicated through critically acclaimed titles like Red Dead Redemption (2010) and L.A. Noire (2011)? By combining analysis of Rockstar’s games and a range of official communications and promotional materials, this book offers critical discussion of Rockstar as a company, their video games, and ultimately, their attempts at creating new narratives about U.S. history and culture. It explores the ways in which Rockstar’s brand identity and their titles coalesce to create a new kind of video game history, how promotional materials work to claim the "authenticity" of these products, and assert the authority of game developers to perform the role of historian. By working at the intersection of historical game studies, U.S. history, and film and media studies, this book explores what happens when contemporary demands for historical authenticity are brought to bear on the way we envisage the past –– and whose past it is deemed to be. Ultimately, this book implores those who research historical video games to consider the oft-forgotten sources at the margins of these games as importance spaces where historical meaning is made and negotiated.

Download or read book After The Event written by Chris Henson and published by Mark Binmore. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am waiting for Mark. For the last several months he has been missing, Garbo-like, from public life. But in reality he has been writing a new book. We have agreed to go back over the original manuscripts for this edition, to do some editing, add in some extras, delete a few choice words and phrases. We meet in his London home, where he is dressed in a workday uniform of brown shirt, jeans and trainers, hair clipped up in practical busy-busy fashion, all smiles and loud laughter. We first met over five years ago. Then we tentatively shook hands and the laughter was nervous. All that has changed. But some things have not. He still famously hates interviews. Around us there is evidence of a very regular existence. There are books scattered everywhere, a Sony widescreen with a DVD of Shackleton sitting below it. Atop the fireplace hangs a painting called Fishermen by James Southall, a tableau of weather-beaten sea dogs wrestling with a rowing boat; a gift he bought himself on the anniversary of a publication. Balanced against a wall in the office next door is a replica of the Rosebud sledge burned at the dramatic conclusion of Citizen Kane. As I unpack my scripts, I begin with a question. You once said, 'There is a figure that is adored, but I'd question very strongly that it's me.' There is silence. A stare. You did say it. 'Well supposedly I said that. But in what context did I say it?' Just talking about people building up this image of you. It was one of the first things you ever said to me. 'Yes, but I'm not, am I?' There was also that interview that described you as someone fragile being who's hidden himself away. 'That was fairly amusing. A lot of the time it doesn't bother me. I suppose I do think I go out of my way to be a very normal person and I just find it frustrating that people think that I'm some kind of weirdo reclusive that never comes out into the world.' His voice notches up in volume. Did you ever feel you would finish your first book? 'Oh yeah,' he sighs. 'I mean, there were so many times I thought, I'll have the book finished this year, definitely, I'll get it out this year. Then there were a couple of years where I thought, I'm never gonna do this. I don't know why. Time evaporates.' He walks over and picks up the manuscripts. He reads a bit. He laughs. 'Did I really agree to this?' he asks. Mark knows the answer. 'A couple of people who read the first book Tour De Europa,' he says, 'they either really liked it or they found it very uncomfortable. I liked the idea of it being uncomfortable. I thought that was great. I love the ambiguity. But I also loved looking back on lost conversations and instantly remembering an emotion.' A clock somewhere strikes two and a friend arrives with tea, pizza, avocado with balsamic vinegar and cream cake for afters, only to be playfully admonished by Mark, who protests, 'I can't eat all this shit!' It would appear some things never change.

Download or read book Blessed in the Darkness written by Joel Osteen and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Find comfort in dark times and grow your trust and faith in God with this inspiring and insightful guide from Lakewood Church pastor and #1 New York Times bestselling author Joel Osteen. All of us will go through dark times that we don't understand: a difficulty with a friend, an unfair situation at work, a financial setback, an unexpected illness, a divorce, or the loss of a loved one. Those types of experiences are part of the human journey. But when we find ourselves in such a place, it's important that we keep a positive perspective. Joel Osteen writes that if we stay in faith and keep a good attitude when we go through challenges, we will not only grow, but we will see how all things work together for our good. Through practical applications and scriptural insight, Blessed in the Darkness focuses on how to draw closer to God and trust Him when life doesn't make sense. If we will go through the dark place in the valley trusting, believing, and knowing that God is still in control, we will come to the table that is already prepared for us, where our cup runs over.

Book Synopsis Unpackin?-The Baggage of Life by : Dan Brannan
Download or read book Unpackin?-The Baggage of Life written by Dan Brannan and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I went from being a healthy, soon-to-retire airline pilot to a man with cancer who lost his job of more than twenty-five years and his retirement savings. Initially, I fell into a prolonged and deep depression. One warm spring afternoon while sitting on the porch, I made the decision to end it all to take my own life, reasoning that my life insurance policy had greater value for my wife and three children than did a man with cancer, no job, and no money. It was then, while immersed in these suicidal thoughts, that I fell into some sort of sleep, more like a trance than sleep, during which time I had what I can only describe as a surreal experience. It was strange but so very real, like I was in another world, another place, or another time. Since that afternoon on the porch, I have engaged in a journey of reflection and have realized that the baggage we begin to accumulate in our earliest years ultimately affects every relationship that we have, none more so than the one we have with ourselves. We have only two choices: we can buckle beneath our load or we can unpack it and become greater than we ever imagined ourselves to be.
