Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A meditation on holiness and beauty through the study of Saint Mary of Egypt. Saint Mary of Egypt has fascinated theologians, poets, and artists since the seventh century. Her story is richly evocative, encompassing sin and sanctity, concupiscence and asceticism, youth and old age. In Promiscuous Grace, Sonia Velázquez thinks with Saint Mary of Egypt about the relationship between beauty and holiness. Drawing on an archive spanning Spanish medieval poetry, Baroque paintings, seventeenth-century hagiography, and Balzac’s Le chef-d’œuvre inconnu, Velázquez argues for the importance of the senses on the surface of religious texts on her way to revealing why the legend of Saint Mary of Egypt still matters today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God, Sex, and Politics examines both sides of the church controversy over homosexuality to consider the ways in which people develop, in everyday thought and interaction, their beliefs about God and justice. Dawne Moon explores how members of Protestant congregations determine what is just and what is not, what is right and what is wrong, what is loving and what is sinful. Through this compelling work we learn that the considerable turmoil surrounding homosexuality in churches has less to do with homosexuality than with the fear of weakening the church's spiritual, communal solidarity. We learn too how the church mirrors the secular world—the fear of division and politics leads members to avoid conflict in the congregations Moon examines. And so, the Protestants who are the subject of her study avoid debating the key issue of whether homosexuality is sinful because of its potentially polarizing effects. The religious culture Moon uncovers is ultimately critical of politics and of the intense moral and social discord that members believe it entails. God, Sex, and Politics will be of enormous value to sociologists of religion and anyone interested in religious controversies over sexuality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of Christianity, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT” or“queer”) people have been condemned as unrepentant sinners who are in dire need of God’s saving grace. As a result of this condemnation, LGBT people have been subjected to great spiritual, emotional and physical abuse and violence. This issue takes on a particular urgency in light of the ongoing harassment and bullying of LGBT young people by their classmates. Cheng argues that people need to be liberated from the traditional legal model of thinking about sin and grace as a violation of divine and natural laws in which grace is understood as the strength to refrain from violating such laws. Rather Cheng proposes a Christological model based upon the theologies of Irenaeus, Bonaventure and Barth, in which sin and grace are defined in terms of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. This book serves as a useful resource for all people who struggle to make sense of the traditional Christian doctrines of sin and grace in the context of the 21st century.

Book excerpt: "Bring up a child in the way he shall go and when he is older he shall not depart from it." Grace Lee believed that Bible verse fervently. She was certain her daughter, Rosemary, would be not only an active Southern Baptist but a foreign missionary as well. During the late ‘60s, changes were afoot, forcing Grace to realize things were not what they ought to have been. Though she tried to close her eyes to political and social turmoil, the glaring faults she began seeing in her church were another matter. Dorothy Blackwell, a fellow-member in the Woman’s Missionary Union, had the reputation of being a “good” Southerner but church members were often askance at her vocal championing of what was considered the “Radical Left.” Dorothy’s strong convictions prompted Grace to explore her own unspoken doubts about the new direction their church was taking. She was utterly amazed when she realized the profound influence Miss Dorothy had on Rosemary, as well. While the rumble of fundamentalism shook her church to its very foundations, Grace also struggled with her vision of service for Rosemary. Was she prepared for the consequences of what she and Dorothy championed: the commitment to conscience?

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered if there?s a secret to living a life of freedom and holiness? Have you feared that maybe you?re missing something somewhere? Or perhaps you?ve wondered whether it really is even possible to live a life free of immorality and sexual sin? Statistics today say that sexual problems ? such as porn addiction, sex before marriage, and adultery ? are more prevalent than they have ever been before. They affect those of faith just as often as those who do not profess any form of religion. Sexual addictions have become a master weapon via which the devil keeps millions of people from fulfilling their God-ordained calling and destiny. The devastating effects of sexual addictions and problems are obvious throughout the world. The family unit is adversely affected, divorce is on the rise, and countless relationships are affected negatively or ruined altogether due to these widespread issues. Is there a key to freedom? In "Sexual Battles: Experiencing Lasting Victory over Sexual Sin", author Seun Israel reveals his own past with these debilitating issues, and the journey he took to lasting victory. With scripture-based principles, the author focuses on providing a practical solution to sexual addictions, and a transition to a life of purity before God. His journey will inspire and motivate readers that anyone can gain true and lasting victory.

If Americans could still blush, we might blush at the words, "Rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love" (Proverbs 5:18-19). But, of course, sin always tries to trash God's gifts. So we can't just celebrate sex for what God made it to be; we have to fight what sin turned it into. The contributors to this unique volume encourage you to do both: celebrate and struggle. This book has something for all-men and women, married and single-from contributors like John Piper, C. J. and Carolyn Mahaney, Mark Dever, Al Mohler, Carolyn McCulley, and others.

Book excerpt: What do you think when you hear the word grace? Is it meant for godly people alone? Is grace an opportunity to willfully sin since you’ll be forgiven anyway? Can we earn grace through our works? In Woman of Grace, author Elizabeth R. Williams answers these questions and more. A prophetess, teacher, writer, and mentor, Williams clarifies the true meaning of grace. Her life, full of experiences, demonstrates her understanding that nothing other than the grace of God could have sustained her. She documents her own stories and those of others to encourage women to rely on God’s grace to uphold them during any circumstances. The teachings in Woman of Grace help you understand your worth in Christ through his grace. It discusses how you have grace to seek God more than ever—grace to intercede for others, grace to be healed, grace to live a repentant and sinless life, grace to forgive, grace to overcome fear, and grace to enjoy God in all aspects of your life. This devotional brings healing and guidance to walk in the many graces of God. Woman of grace, you are an overcomer and that is what makes you beautiful and powerful.

Book excerpt: Wilderness periods of our lives—those dry and desperate seasons when God seems distant and detached, perhaps even indifferent or impotent—can seem an abnormal and painful part of our lives that simply must be painfully plodded through and somehow endured. Yet, far from being something abnormal and life-threatening, like a cancer invading our bodies, wilderness periods represent a fundamental element of our life in the Spirit and part of God’s well-orchestrated plan to guarantee that we become and possess everything he desires for us.

Book excerpt: “God’s Amazing Grace: Reconciling Four Centuries of African American Marriages and Families is an insightful study that will be welcomed by thoughtful practitioners and all who ponder the African American family’s complexity. Readers familiar with the deep, rich reservoir of African American family literature will recognize many of the black scholars referenced in this work. Readers unfamiliar with these sources will be grateful to discover them and the effective use of disparate literature. “This work will become a different kind of guide for studying American history through the lens of the African American family. Underneath all the research is the search for answers to the compelling questions: Is there a correlation between slave owners’ denial to slaves, God’s design for the family, and the familial chaos that has plagued African American families for more than a hundred fifty years? And if there is connection, what is it? “The author has brought something new to a familiar topic of discussion—the Bible. The unique moral compass that steered this study is solidly anchored in the bedrock of holy scripture. In this work, the history and sociology of African American marriages are examined in light of the questions asked by Holy Scripture. In so doing, Dr. Turner skillfully attempts to help readers make sense of the story of black families in America. May this book mark the beginning to a new reality for African American families” (Dr. Willie Peterson, senior executive advisor, adjunct professor of Pastoral Ministries, Dallas Theological Seminary).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Bed of Heaven is a work of Christian ethics that examines how eschatology might reshape concepts of sexual morality. With the rise of institutional Christianity in the Roman Empire, Christian attitudes about sexual desire and activity were soon controlled by doctrines of virginity and celibacy, or, monogamous marriage for the sake of procreation. These moral theologies aligned with a certain track of Christian eschatology, which imagined the future resurrection of the body, but without any corresponding sexual desires. As a result, traditional Christianity developed a preference for celibacy on earth to match the loss of sexual desire and activity in heaven, making marriage and monogamy temporal goods only. In recent years, a few scholars of religion have challenged whether this vision of a sexless heaven is valid. However, they have not fully developed a vision of sex in heaven that might function to critique and reform Christian sexual ethics on earth. Richard W. McCarty explores scripture, church teachings, and different models of eschatology to offer a bold new conception of Christian sexual ethics that is inclusive of LGBTQ and heterosexual people, both in and outside of monogamous configurations.

Book excerpt: Jay Griffiths is a tour guide for anyone who has ever wished to commune with the side of our human psyche that remains in touch with the wild. Equally at home among the "sea gypsy" Bajo people who live off the coast of Thailand and forage their food from the ocean floor, drinking the psychedelic ayahuasca plant with Amazonian shamans, or joining an Inuit whale hunt at the northern tip of Canada, Griffiths takes readers on an adventure both charted and un–chartable. She divides her meditations on these travels into sections named after the ancient elemental properties of the universe—Earth, Air, Fire, Ice, and Water—because her subject matter is not merely the places traveled to but the depths of mind and the cultural narratives revealed by place. It is a universal story told of far–flung groups of humans, with vastly different ways of life, connected through the varied wilderness that sustains them. By describing the ways in which human societies and the human mind have developed in response to the wilder elements of our homelands, Savage Grace reveals itself as a benediction for the emotional, intellectual, and physical nourishment that people continue to draw from the natural world. Under the sway of Griffiths' charisma, her poetic prose, and her deeply learned and persuasive case for the wild roots of our shared human being, we learn that we are all, each and every one of us, a force of nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we consider the concept of sexual abuse and harassment, our minds tend to jump either towards adults caught in unhealthy relationships or criminals who take advantage of children. But the millions of maturing teenagers who also deal with sexual harassment can fall between the cracks. When it comes to sexual relationships, adolescents pose a particular problem. Few teenagers possess all of the emotional and intellectual tools needed to navigate these threats, including the all too real advances made by supervisors, teachers, and mentors. In Sexual Exploitation of Teenagers, Jennifer Drobac explores the shockingly common problem of maturing adolescents who are harassed and exploited by adults in their lives. Reviewing the neuroscience and psychosocial evidence of adolescent development, she explains why teens are so vulnerable to adult harassers. Even today, in an age of increasing public awareness, criminal and civil law regarding the sexual abuse of minors remains tragically inept and irregular from state to state. Drobac uses six recent cases of teens suffering sexual harassment to illuminate the flaws and contradictions of this system, skillfully showing how our current laws fail to protect youths, and offering an array of imaginative legal reforms that could achieve increased justice for adolescent victims of sexual coercion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with similarities and correspondences between Late Antiquity (c. 300-600 AD) and the Renaissance (roughly after c. 1350). In both periods, the presence of two competing forces, the ancient classical and the Christian traditions, led to a constant dynamic of thought and creativity. The ten essays in this volume present new views on these issues in the fields of political philosophy, theology, law, literature, art, and architecture.
