Contre Bergson, Bachelard soutient que la durée, loin d’être un tissu indéchirable, une enveloppe qui nous berce ou qui nous porte, a un caractère essentiellement composite. Elle se forme sur la base discontinue des actes de l’esprit. Pour vérifier cette thèse, Bachelard aborde tour à tour la psychologie de la mémoire et de l’action volontaire, les formes de la causalité en physique, l’observation des phénomènes quantiques, l’esthétique musicale et poétique, les compositions temporelles du sentiment, de la pensée abstraite et de la vie morale. Il en dégage cette leçon générale : durer, c’est ordonner de loin en loin des instants actifs ; c’est composer des rythmes. L’approfondissement métaphysique de cette idée conduit Bachelard à dégager ce qu’il tient pour le noyau « dialectique » de l’expérience temporelle, et plus généralement de la vie de l’esprit : l’oscillation entre activité et repos, être et néant. Le projet de « rythmanalyse » sur lequel débouche cette étonnante enquête suggère que le secret philosophique du repos est dans une existence bien rythmée. De nombreuses applications permettent d’en vérifier l’idée : de l’homéopathie à la chronobiologie, en passant par le travail poétique des ambivalences sentimentales ou l’analyse de « l’état lyrique ». Accompagnée d’une présentation, de notes explicatives, d’une table analytique, d’un index et d’une bibliographie, cette édition permettra à chacun de prendre la mesure de l’originalité et de l’audace d’un essai de philosophie expérimentale qui n’a rien perdu de son actualité depuis sa première publication en 1936.

While a few states have been advancing electoral democracy, environmental protection and peaceful state building, the overall intensity of violence in the region has led to civil wars, invasion, genocide, dictatorships, political instability, and underdevelopment. Efforts to establish sustainable peace, meaningful socio-economic development and participatory democracy have not been quite successful. Using various methodologies and paradigms, this book interrogates the complexity of the causes of these conflicts; and examines their impact and implications for socio-economic development of the region. The non-consensual actions related to these conflicts and imperatives of power struggles supported by the agents of savage capitalism have paralysed efforts toward progress. The book therefore recommends new policy frameworks within regionalist lenses and neo-realist politics to bring about sustainable peace in the region.
