Book excerpt: In the vastness of the cosmos, humanity has long gazed upward, dreaming of distant worlds and the possibilities that lie beyond the confines of our own planet. This journey of exploration and discovery is not merely about reaching new frontiers; it is a profound quest for understanding our place in the universe and the relationships we forge with one another and the myriad forms of life that may exist beyond Earth. The narrative that unfolds within these pages chronicles a century of transformation—a time when humanity transitioned from the limitations of its terrestrial origins to the expansive horizons of interstellar existence. It is a tale marked by ambition, resilience, and the unyielding desire to connect with the unknown. The experiences chronicled here reflect not only our technological advancements but also the profound psychological and cultural shifts that accompany such monumental changes. As we delve into the intricacies of our journey, we witness the evolution of identity, the challenges of coexistence, and the richness of diverse cultures that come together in the pursuit of knowledge and harmony. Book excerpt: Captain Dave Dawson was Earth's first starship commander. He knew that the cosmos was teeming with life. He had met folks from the Pleiadian star cluster. He had met people from Sirius and Lyran as well. He had even met an Arcturian, a very advanced race of people. But he was most familiar with the race from Orion Nebula. So he was thrilled when they selected him to accompany a beautiful Orion woman on a deep space mission in search of a rogue planet, or two. But things were not what they appeared to be. Captain Dawson learned about Earth's real history. The terrifying truth that was being kept from mankind. He learned about alien abductions and genetic manipulation. He was schooled on portals and vortexes and wormholes. But the most terrifying of all was the news of who really controlled the Earth. A dark, cold race of beings ran things from the shadows. A vile race that has conquered Earth, killed and enslaved the very first colonists to the planet! They no longer were content with just Earth. They were ready to expand their influence to the heavens themselves! Captain Dawson was assured that a plan, a project like no other, was unfolding to save mankind and the galaxy itself!-and that he had a role to play in this project. He didn't know what role that would be. All he knew was that he needed to return to Earth. But the Orions were reluctant to let him go . . .

Book excerpt: Michael Poole's wormholes constructed in the orbit of Jupiter had opened the galaxy to humankind. Then Poole tried looping a wormhole back on itself, tying a knot in space and ripping a hole in time. It worked. Too well. Poole was never seen again. Then from far in the future, from a time so distant that the stars themselves were dying embers, came an urgent SOS--and a promise. The universe was doomed, but humankind was not. Poole had stumbled upon an immense artifact, light-years across, fabricated from the very string of the cosmos. The universe had a door. And it was open...
Book Synopsis Making Starships and Stargates by : James F. Woodward
Download or read book Making Starships and Stargates written by James F. Woodward and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To create the exotic materials and technologies needed to make stargates and warp drives is the holy grail of advanced propulsion. A less ambitious, but nonetheless revolutionary, goal is finding a way to accelerate a spaceship without having to lug along a gargantuan reservoir of fuel that you blow out a tailpipe. Tethers and solar sails are conventional realizations of the basic idea. There may now be a way to achieve these lofty objectives. “Making Starships and Stargates” will have three parts. The first will deal with information about the theories of relativity needed to understand the predictions of the effects that make possible the “propulsion” techniques, and an explanation of those techniques. The second will deal with experimental investigations into the feasibility of the predicted effects; that is, do the effects exist and can they be applied to propulsion? The third part of the book – the most speculative – will examine the question: what physics is needed if we are to make wormholes and warp drives? Is such physics plausible? And how might we go about actually building such devices? This book pulls all of that material together from various sources, updates and revises it, and presents it in a coherent form so that those interested will be able to find everything of relevance all in one place.

U.S. Representative Scott Andrews begins to doubt the motives of these "benign" messengers and suspects that they harbor designs of biblical proportions against the entire earth. This political/sci-fi/spiritual thriller pulls the reader onto a roller-coaster plot, with twists and turns through cutting-edge space and energy technology, genetic manipulation, back-room political machinations, and international intrigue on the highest levels.

Book Synopsis The Metis of Projects by : J.B. Berndt
Download or read book The Metis of Projects written by J.B. Berndt and published by IAP. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Metis of Projects” addresses veteran project manager Ben Berndt’s unease with the use of established (project) management frameworks given their general inefficacy. Despite the use of these frameworks, it is estimated that some 30% of projects still fail because they deliver too late, cost more than expected and/or lack quality. Often, projects and their environments are too complex to be controlled by rather linear frameworks. Where most practitioners define complexity as "complicated," most academics define complexity (more correctly) as interrelatedness. In recent years, the academic community has developed several "level-of-complexity frameworks;" however, these frameworks are not commonly known to practitioners and are therefore not regularly used. And, when examined further, these frameworks appear to be merely environmental scans, used to assess the level of complexity in the project management environment. But projects also carry inherent complexity; they are socially complex, and it is this social complexity that—paradoxically—needs management. Combined with personality assessments, social network theory is used here to glean a better understanding of the social complexity in a project. Berndt believes that, following Hugo Letiche and Michael Lissack's emergent coherence concept, managers should steer clear of frameworks in order to come to grips with the complex, and so he introduces whole systems methodologies, in which group understanding is used to continually set a next step. Berndt concludes his study by describing his multi-view, multi-tool participative project management style, which he thinks best aligns with (managing) the complex.
