Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projects are hard. By definition, projects are about non-routine activities. Many of them are large and complex; they may involve many people, often from different backgrounds and increasingly with different languages and cultures. Amongst all of this, it is easy to get lost, to overlook important trends or to misunderstand each other. So projects fail. Graham Oakes' Project Reviews, Assurance and Governance is about learning from your mistakes and understanding what's really going on with your projects. In order for reviews and assurance to provide you with this information and learning, you need to perform them effectively and that is the purpose of this book. The core of the book is built around a number of models of project review processes and governance, all derived from practice and interspersed with case studies drawn from practitioners, project management literature and from practices in other industry. The result is the blend of the conceptual and the practical needed to make your project assurance process sympathetic, relevant and rigorous for your organization and the range of projects and programmes which you undertake.

It advises how these can be put in place to give stakeholders confidence in the control and delivery of their projects without waste. The authors explain not just the mechanism and objective of project performance reviews but also the ideal environment in which they are intended to be implemented. Without the professional cooperation of all interested and informed parties, the effectiveness of any review may be compromised. Topics addressed include: introducing the project review method, engaging project stakeholders, ensuring project governance, conducting project risk assessments, improving accountability, providing project assurance, organizing and managing projects, optimizing review scope and approach, avoiding review pitfalls, meeting existing audit standards, and proposing alternate approaches to project evaluation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many governments have effectively organized public project implementation systems in their jurisdictions. At the same time, many other countries remain at a less advanced level of public project management. Globally, there is a need for project management knowledge to be transferred between governments. However, no systematic review of these practices has been developed to date. Projects, Government, and Public Policy was written to fulfill this need and presents a review of project management practices in countries with developed project-based capabilities. This book uses its own rigorous model to present this review systematically. This book’s practical purpose is to give a structured overview of government-level project management practices. This knowledge can be used in the work of governments to improve the management of public projects and the implementation of public policies. Many professionals working in public institutions understand project management concepts differently than project management professionals. Therefore, this book begins with a chapter that describes the differences between the conceptual basis of public administration and project management. The body of this book has five parts. Part I is mainly intended for those involved in government and public administration who want to acquire or increase knowledge about project management. Part II provides an overview of the basic concepts from the theory of public administration, public policies, and development management. Part III describes what makes public projects unique and the success factors specific to projects of this sector. Knowledge about effective government project management practices is covered in Part IV. The concluding Part V begins with a general overview of the maturity model concept. Its main part covers the description of a maturity model showing ways to systematically improve the implementation of public projects. This book is written for governments and government administrators, including the most influential decision-makers, who craft policies to guide a country’s development as well as how to implement projects. This book is also intended for supporters and enthusiasts of project management in government and public administration by providing them with a description of the solutions used by project management in public administration. This book is intended, too, for all project management practitioners working for public projects: project managers, team members, sponsors, and middle-level executives of project-delivering private companies. By knowing public administration concepts, they can manage their projects better and use a common language with their clients.

Book excerpt: For the last 20 years the annual Major Projects Report has highlighted the variable performance of the Ministry of Defence's highest value defence equipment procurement projects, many of which have suffered cost overruns and delays. The NAO is examining the complex cultural and systemic drivers which need to be managed if military capability is to be delivered faster, cheaper and better. Project control is a critical linking factor between a number of the key drivers of successful acquisition, including management information, governance and assurance, risk and cost estimating, and ultimately budgeting and funding. The report describes four main levels of a gold standard practice pyramid: establishing and sustaining the right cultural environment; creating clear structure and boundaries; measuring progress and making decisions focused on successful project delivery; reporting to enable strategic decisions. The report finds the strongest message emerging from the analysis is that it is the "softer" factors about building and sustaining relationships (the bottom level of the pyramid) upon which success is predicated. There is a wide variety of performance against the gold standard, and this report presents recommendations to help ensure projects adopt practices closer to the standard. The full evidence underlying the recommendations is available on a website - www.naodefencevfm.org.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, an organization’s technical methodologies were expected to fulfill project management process needs. However, they sometimes fell short of applying what is known today as "professional project management" concepts and practices. Written by one of the nation’s most highly regarded project management mentors, The Complete Project Management Methodology and Toolkit delineates a "business-relevant" methodology that can be introduced across different industries and business environments. The book describes the ProjectPRISMTM Project Management Methodology, an innovative, matrix-based approach to conducting project management that introduces relevant concepts, practices, and tools in an effective project management solution. Aligned with common business practices, Gerard Hill’s method demonstrates how to develop project plans, keep on schedule, manage budgets, maintain areas of responsibility, and evaluate a project’s progress from concept to completion. The text also offers insight for customizing the methodology to meet the unique needs of individual organizations. Project management has emerged as a professional discipline and is coming into the mainstream just when it appears to be most needed in the business environment. Demonstrating that project management, in many ways, is business management, the author provides an exceptional foundation for creating a fine-tuned project management practice and a relevant business solution for every organization.

Book Synopsis Project Governance by : Ralf Muller

Download or read book Project Governance written by Ralf Muller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without a governance structure, an organization runs the risk of conflicts and inconsistencies between the various means of achieving organizational goals, the processes and resources, causing costly inefficiencies that impact negatively on both smooth running and bottom line profitability. However, the frequency of projects failing to meet these corporate objectives has focused attention firmly on the process of project governance. In this book, Ralf Müller provides a well-researched framework to explain the different preferences organizations have in goal setting, along with the best-practices, roles and responsibilities related to governance tasks. This concise text is an important guide for project and programme managers, those managers concerned with corporate governance such as risk managers and internal auditors, project sponsors and project board members, as well as academics researching organizational and project performance. Project Governance is part of the Gower Fundamentals of Project Management Series. Practising professionals and project students will find in the fundamentals a definitive, shorthand guide to each of the main competencies associated with project management; a book that is authoritative, based on current research but immediately relevant and applicable.
