Book Synopsis Analysis of a Periodized Mental Skills Delivery Model for the USSA Cross-country National Development Ski Team by : Shannon Von Guenthner
Download or read book Analysis of a Periodized Mental Skills Delivery Model for the USSA Cross-country National Development Ski Team written by Shannon Von Guenthner and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mental skills training (MST) programs have received considerable support for effectiveness in enhancing sport performance in athletes (Greenspan & Feltz, 1989; Vealey, 1994). A consensus among the literature indicates the need for more controlled studies investigating different and more systematic methods of implementation, especially the use of idiographic designs (Weinberg & Gould, 1999; Weinberg & Williams, 1993; Balague, 1999). The primary purpose of this study was to design, implement, and evaluate a mental skills training program for elite cross-country ski racers in a case-by case fashion. This study also serves as an empirical test of a recently developed method of program delivery by utilizing mental skills "menu" approach (Hammermeister, 2000) within a periodized format of mental training (Burton, Hammermeister, Holliday, & Naylor, 2000). This delivery model was also selected to address a request from the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) for more open coach/consultant communication and for evidence of measurable effects from psychology services. Six members of the USSA Cross Country National Developmental Group (NDG) participated in a comprehensive mental skills intervention. This intervention included an 8 week educational phase followed by the development and implementation of a periodized individual mental training program based on the unique needs of each athlete (Hammermeister, 2000). Pre- and post-intervention testing utilizing the Test of Performance Strategies (TOPS; Thomas, Murphy & Hardy, 1999), the Trait Sport Confidence Inventory (TSCI; Vealy, 1986), the Competitive Orientation Inventory (COl: Vealy, 1986), and the Sport Anxiety Scale (SAS; Smith, Smoll, & Schultz, 1990) were used to evaluate program effectiveness. Single-subject pre and post-test analysis of treatment effect for each individual indicated enhanced psychological skill knowledge and usage across all athletes. Increases in both task and ego motivation were found to be a trend among the athletes. Improved sport confidence and decreases in the somatic, cognitive, and concentration disruption components of the SAS were found in five of the six athletes. Furthermore, feedback given by the NDG athletes and coaches indicated a preference for this type of delivery format. These positive results provide evidence for the usefulness of a psychological skills menu approach to a periodized model of mental training for elite ski racers"--Document.

Book Synopsis Endurance Performance in Sport by : Carla Meijen
Download or read book Endurance Performance in Sport written by Carla Meijen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athletes participating at all levels of endurance performance can relate to the impact of psychological factors. Whether it is motivation, self-belief, feeling nervous before a race, exercise-induced pain, sticking to a pacing strategy, or thoughts around what to focus on, there are a vast number of psychological factors which can affect endurance performance. Bringing together experts in the field from around the world, this is the first text to provide a detailed overview of the psychology of endurance performance where there is a research and an applied focus looking at both main theoretical models as well as how interventions can support an athlete’s efficacy and well-being. The authors look at regulatory processes around pain, decision-making, self-belief, emotions, and meta-cognition, before examining a range of cognitive strategies, including the use of imagery, goals, self-talk, and mindfulness techniques. With a final section of the book outlining issues related to mental health that are relevant to endurance performance, the book shows that the future of research and application of psychological theory in endurance performance in sport is bright and thriving. Aimed at researchers, students, coaches, and athletes themselves, this is essential reading for anyone wishing to better understand how our minds experience endurance in performance arenas, and what psychological techniques can be used to make us more efficient.

This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evidence-based scientific understanding of factors determining Olympic winter sports performance, recent changes, the evolution in training content and methods, the improvement in technology as well as the occurrence of injury and illness is required. On one hand, this would provide the opportunity to translate research to practice. On the other hand, to guide the practice of Olympic winter sports with the ultimate goal of improving the performance. Certainly, the continued evolution of Olympic winter sports has contributed to an enormous accumulation of knowledge, evidence, and relevant training technologies. Sports sciences, including physiology, conditioning, nutrition, biomechanics, coaching, psychology, as well as sport technology, history and social sciences, have much to contribute to the preparation of the athletes in the Olympic winter sports. Consequently, this Research Topic sought to provide a platform of contributions to set out a comprehensive framework of the components that should be addressed when developing training plans leading to elite Olympic winter sports performance. Overall, the papers were all directed toward a better understanding of physiological, biomechanical, and training factors related to different Olympic winter sports disciplines: cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, biathlon, Nordic combined, speed skating, snowboarding, and ski-cross.
