Book excerpt: This report describes progress on a collaborative research program combining the expertise of individuals from several universities to develop a new ability to predict the propulsion performance of solid rocket motors. The focus of the research on nonsteady behavior is unique and the overall project is not possible at any one of the institutions participating in this coordinated research. The individual tasks which we are studying will pursue solid propellant decomposition under unsteady conditions, nonsteady aspects of gas phase flame structure measurements, numerical modeling of multidimensional flame structure, propellant/flame interactions and overall nonsteady propellant combustion characteristics in realistic rocket motor environments. Our goal has been to develop general models of fundamental mechanisms of combustion instability that can be applied to a variety of new energetic materials.

Book excerpt: Mechanics and Chemistry of Solid Propellants is a collection of papers presented at the Fourth Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics, held in Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana on April 19-21, 1965 under the joint sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research and Purdue University. The contributors consider the development and utilization of solid propellants. This book is composed of 22 chapters that cover the many branches of studies that touch upon the science and technology of solid propellants. Some chapters present the mathematical and physical theories underlying the behavior of solid propellants, such as nonlinear and linear theories of viscoelasticity. Other chapters are devoted to advances in solid propellant binder chemistry; combustion and its effects on the structural integrity of the solid propellant grain; and design and other engineering problems. This book will be of value to scientists, engineers, and researchers who are interested in the diverse applications of solid propellants.

Book excerpt: This third edition of the classic on the thermochemical aspects of the combustion of propellants and explosives is completely revised and updated and now includes a section on green propellants and offers an up-to-date view of the thermochemical aspects of combustion and corresponding applications. Clearly structured, the first half of the book presents an introduction to pyrodynamics, describing fundamental aspects of the combustion of energetic materials, while the second part highlights applications of energetic materials, such as propellants, explosives and pyrolants, with a focus on the phenomena occurring in rocket motors. Finally, an appendix gives a brief overview of the fundamentals of aerodynamics and heat transfer, which is a prerequisite for the study of pyrodynamics. A detailed reference for readers interested in rocketry or explosives technology.

Book excerpt: The bulk of the research on this contract was concerned with the mechanisms that cause plateau burning of ammonium perchlorate/hydrocarbon (AP/HC) propellants. The long range goal is to identify the steps in the combustion process that dominate overall burning, and in particular to understand which of these steps in the combustion process lead to plateau burning. Burning alone, matrixes (mixture of binder, fine AP, and catalysts) almost always burn slower than the bimodal propellant at all pressures. The improved burning with a catalyst is probably due to both increased surface layer heat release and to catalytic break down of the large fuel vapor molecules which cause the flame to stand closer to the surface. Deflagration rate of the large AP particles is always lower than the propellant rate, and contributes little to overall rate, except in close proximity to the matrix where a hot stoichiometric diffusion flame occurs and (apparently) supports the marginal matrix burning, accounting for the higher propellant rate. Observations of local intermittency of burning seem to contribute to the low burning rate associated with plateaus and spontaneous quenches.

Book excerpt: Modern energetic materials include explosives, blasting powders, pyrotechnic m- tures and rocket propellants [1, 2]. The study of high-temperature decomposition of condensed phases of propellants and their components (liquid, solid and hybrid) is currently of special importance for the development of space-system engineering [3, 4]. To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6]. The same reasons have resulted in signi?cant theoretical and practical interest in the high-temperature decomposition of components of hybrid propellants. It is known that hybrid propellants have not been used very widely due to the low bu- ing (pyrolysis) rates of the polymer blocks in the combustion chambers of hybrid rocket engines. To increase the burning rates it is necessary to obtain information about their relationships to the corresponding kinetic and thermophysical prop- ties of the fuels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical capability to predict the burning rate of real propellants from their ingredients would be an invaluable aid to formulating new propellants. Despite progress over the last decade on a very few simple ingredients, such as cyclotrimethylenetrintramine (RDX), and a few simple binary mixtures, no general capability of this sort exists today. This shortcoming is not due to insufficient computational resources, but to a lack of understanding of fundamental combustion mechanisms in the condensed phase and surface(gas interlace for typical propellant ingredients and their mixtures. This difficult problem is likely to remain intractable for some time to come. In this report, we demonstrate that our previously published semi-empirical formalism for single ingredients can be success fully extended to treat multi-ingredient propellants. In particular, for purposes of this report, we confine ourselves to nitrate- ester propellants, using MlO, M2, M9, and JA2 as examples. However, the method should also be applicable to other classes of homogeneous propellants and even composite propellants where mixing of ingredients in a surface melt layer or sufficiently small particle sizes remove the multi- dimensional character. The method treats the gas-phase processes on the level of elementary reaction and multicomponent transport. A semi-empirical pyrolysis law coupled with informed estimates of the decomposition products of the condensed phase enables us to finesse the absence of knowledge of the detailed processes occurring in the condensed phase and at the burning surface. Results of a computer code, CYCLOPS, based on this approach, show that both the burning rate and flame structure are well predicted for a series of four U. S. Army gun propellants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research is to establish the processes in solid propellant combustion that control steady and nonsteady combustion rate (composite propellants). The practical goal is to: 1. Tailor burning rate by variation of formulation (oxidizer particle size, ballistic modifiers, and choice of binders). This includes learning what processes lead to low or negative sensitivity of burning rate to pressure increase (plateau and mesa burning). 2. Determine steps in the combustion process that are most responsive to oscillatory flows (combustion instability). 3. Evaluate the combustion characteristics of new oxidizer and binder ingredients, and of propellants that include new ingredients (and compare results with those of AP oxidizer and Ap/hydrocarbon binder propellants). 4. Develop a realistic qualitative model of the combustion process that would identify the requirements for formulation of realistic analytical models.
