Book Synopsis Making a Slave State by : Ryan A. Quintana
Download or read book Making a Slave State written by Ryan A. Quintana and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is the state produced? In what ways did enslaved African Americans shape modern governing practices? Ryan A. Quintana provocatively answers these questions by focusing on the everyday production of South Carolina's state space—its roads and canals, borders and boundaries, public buildings and military fortifications. Beginning in the early eighteenth century and moving through the post–War of 1812 internal improvements boom, Quintana highlights the surprising ways enslaved men and women sat at the center of South Carolina's earliest political development, materially producing the state's infrastructure and early governing practices, while also challenging and reshaping both through their day-to-day movements, from the mundane to the rebellious. Focusing on slaves' lives and labors, Quintana illuminates how black South Carolinians not only created the early state but also established their own extralegal economic sites, social and cultural havens, and independent communities along South Carolina's roads, rivers, and canals. Combining social history, the study of American politics, and critical geography, Quintana reframes our ideas of early American political development, illuminates the material production of space, and reveals the central role of slaves' daily movements (for their owners and themselves) to the development of the modern state.

Download or read book The Northern Sea Route: Its Development and Evolving State of Operations in the 1990s written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The summer of 1991 marked the first time in recent history that Russia offered to escort ships of other countries across the Northern Sea Route (NSR). For moving cargo between the North Pacific region and Northern European ports, the NSR, along Russia's northern coastline, is between 35 and 60% shorter than the traditionally used routes through the Suez and Panama Canals. In addition to its shorter distance, there already exists an extensive ports and shipping infrastructure, a current cargo base, and the potential for developing new markets in Russia and other northern areas. These incentives are attracting considerable attention from the international shipping community, including that portion servicing Alaskan and northwestern U.S. ports. This report is a general compilation of the historical usage, recent trade developments, the current regulatory climate, the physical environment, the ports and navigational infrastructure, cost factors, and practical considerations that may shape future U.S. interests in the route.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New States: A Sketch of the History and Development of the States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington, With Map and Illustrations IN the course of work incident to the revision of geographical text-books, we have frequently to set aside many interesting details as useless in the sum mary outline that must suffice for the schools. In studying the history and progress of the new States that are so fast emerging from the wilderness and the forest, this has constantly been the case, and only a very small part of the story of their growth gathered from many sources has been available. It has been suggested that this matter might be of service in a paper treating more at length the, various phases of life and character developed in their history. With that hope these pages presenting a sketch of the growth and development of the four youngest members of the Union have been prepared. Our greater Northwest is taking on a busy social and industrial life before our eyes, and never heretofore have the American people had so conspicuous and splendid an epitome of their national growth and development unfolded to their view. As in the swift-moving panorama, we see in an hour the progress of a generation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from People's History of the United States: The Progress of Civilization in North America, From the Coming of the White Races to the Last Decade of the Nineteenth Century Two reasons may be assigned for dwelling with tolerable fullness upon this part of our career as a people. The first is the inherent interest which the early ages of our history possess and the second is the dependency of our larger development upon the Colonial planting. He who dwells with care on the matters presented in our age of discovery can hardly fail to find in the same such interest as the drama furnishes to the eager and curious mind. He who studies with attention the facts present in our Colonial epoch will discover in the same the fundamental conditions of the larger national life which has arisen therefrom.
