Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances made by physicists in understanding matter, space, and time and by astronomers in understanding the universe as a whole have closely intertwined the question being asked about the universe at its two extremesâ€"the very large and the very small. This report identifies 11 key questions that have a good chance to be answered in the next decade. It urges that a new research strategy be created that brings to bear the techniques of both astronomy and sub-atomic physics in a cross-disciplinary way to address these questions. The report presents seven recommendations to facilitate the necessary research and development coordination. These recommendations identify key priorities for future scientific projects critical for realizing these scientific opportunities.

Book Synopsis Cosmic Rays in the Earth’s Atmosphere and Underground by : Lev Dorman
Download or read book Cosmic Rays in the Earth’s Atmosphere and Underground written by Lev Dorman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 891 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph as well as the next one (Dorman, M2005) is a result of more than 50 years working in cosmic ray (CR) research. After graduation in December 1950 Moscow Lomonosov State University (Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics Division, the Team of Theoretical Physics), my supervisor Professor D. I. Blokhintsev planned for me, as a winner of a Red Diploma, to continue my education as an aspirant (a graduate student) to prepare for Ph. D. in his very secret Object in the framework of what was in those time called the Atomic Problem. To my regret the KGB withheld permission, and I, together with other Jewish students who had graduated Nuclear Divisions of Moscow and Leningrad Universities and Institutes, were faced with a real prospect of being without any work. It was our good fortune that at that time there was being brought into being the new Cosmic Ray Project (what at that time was also very secret, but not as secret as the Atomic Problem), and after some time we were directed to work on this Project. It was organized and headed by Prof. S. N. Vernov (President of All-Union Section of Cosmic Rays) and Prof. N. V. Pushkov (Director of IZMIRAN); Prof. E. L. Feinberg headed the theoretical part of the Project.

Download or read book Handbook of Geophysics and Space Environments written by Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a comprehensive collection of data, formulas, definitions, and theories concerning the natural environment. It was written by scientists of the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories (AFCRL) which, in 1976, became the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory (AFGL). It was designed to serve a broad spectrum of users: the planner, designer, developer, and operator of aerospace systems; the scientist who will find the tables and figures a convenient reference in his own field; the specialist who needs environmental data in another discipline; and science minded people who seek a summary of space-age environmental research. Revisions of individual chapters and sections of this handbook will be published as additional environmental research efforts pay off in new knowledge.

Book Synopsis Historical Roots of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking by : Rocco Gaudenzi
Download or read book Historical Roots of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking written by Rocco Gaudenzi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-28 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the thinking processes and knowledge resources involved in a complex discovery? How can the physics of solids, the physics of nuclei, and elementary particle physics cross-fertilise in spite of the widely differing domains and energy scales they deal with? This book addresses the questions by reconstructing and examining from the historical epistemological perspective the fascinating heuristic path to the concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking. This analysis especially brings to light the role that analogical reasoning and mathematical reformulations played in the discovery process, as well as the influence of the Japanese milieu and approach to physical problems.
