Download or read book Other Planets written by Robin Maconie and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a catalogue raisonee of Stockhausen's complete output, involving no technical analyses, but rather an examination of the music's aesthetic, practical, and intellectual assumptions. The book contains plentiful citations from the history of radio, film, and sound recording, and from contemporary science and technology. Laid out in strict chronological order, it contains unusually ample commentary on the composer's sources of inspiration, including discussions of the composers Hermann Schroeder, Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Schaeffer, Herbert Eimert, John Cage, the information scientist Werner Meyer-Eppler, and structural anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss. Each of Stockhausen's compositions is treated on its own terms, and also as a piece in a larger puzzle, embracing surrealist art and literature as well as music. Every piece of music is fully documented within the text with full information of the publisher, catalogue number, instrumentation, duration, and composer-authorized compact disc.
Book Synopsis An Incomplete History of the Art of Funerary Violin by : Rohan Kriwaczek
Download or read book An Incomplete History of the Art of Funerary Violin written by Rohan Kriwaczek and published by Scribe Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its origins in the Elizabethan Protestant Reformation, to its final extinction amidst the guns of the First World War, the art of Funerary Violin was characterised by many unique and frequently misunderstood qualities that set it apart from all other forms of music. Despite its enormous influence on classical music generally and on the Romantic Movement in particular, this music has almost entirely vanished. In a series of 'funerary purges', the art of funerary violin was condemned as 'the music of the devil' and the Guild of Funerary Violinists driven into silence or clandestine activity. This is the music that, despite all attempts at suppression, has haunted Europe's collective unconscious for more than a century. Now Rohan Kriwaczek reveals its incredible history. Painstakingly pieced together from a handful of fragments and unsubstantiated and often unspoken rumours, and making use of a number of extraordinary recent discoveries, An Incomplete History of the Art of Funerary Violin celebrates a unique musical tradition that refuses to die.

Book Synopsis Serial Music, Serial Aesthetics by : M. J. Grant
Download or read book Serial Music, Serial Aesthetics written by M. J. Grant and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-06-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serial music was one of the most important aesthetic movements to emerge in post-war Europe, but its uncompromising music and modernist aesthetic has often been misunderstood. This book focuses on the controversial journal die Reihe, whose major contributors included Stockhausen, Eimert, Pousseur, Dieter Schnebel and G. M. Koenig, and discusses it in connection with many lesser-known sources in German musicology. It traces serialism's debt to the theories of Klee and Mondrian, and its relationship to developments in concrete art, modern poetry and the information aesthetics and semiotics of Max Bense and Umberto Eco. M. J. Grant sketches an aesthetic theory of serialism as experimental music, arguing that serial theory's embrace of both rigorous intellectualism and aleatoric processes is not, as many have suggested, a paradox, but the key to serial thought and to its relevance for contemporary theory.

Book Synopsis Memories and Commentaries by : Igor Stravinsky
Download or read book Memories and Commentaries written by Igor Stravinsky and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in one volume--the celebrated Stravinsky and Craft Conversations Few would dispute that Igor Stravinsky was the greatest composer of the twentieth century. Conductor and writer Robert Craft was his closest colleague and friend, and for over twenty-one years he lived with the Stravinskys in their Hollywood home. In the early 1950s he accompanied the composer on his concert tours, and from the mid-1950s to Stravinsky's death in 1971 he co-conducted his concerts. Together Stravinsky and Craft published five acclaimed collections known as the Conversations series, which sprung from informal talks between the two men. In this newly edited and re-structured one-volume version, Craft brings Stravinsky's reflections on his childhood, his family life, professional associates, and personal relationships into sharper focus and places the major compositions in their cultural milieux. The Conversations books are the only published writing attributed to Stravinsky that are actually "by him" in terms of fidelity to his thoughts and opinions, making this volume required reading for all fans and students of Stravinsky's music.
Book Synopsis Mavericks and Other Traditions in American Music by : Michael Broyles
Download or read book Mavericks and Other Traditions in American Music written by Michael Broyles and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From colonial times to the present, American composers have lived on the fringes of society and defined themselves in large part as outsiders. In this stimulating book Michael Broyles considers the tradition of maverick composers and explores what these mavericks reveal about American attitudes toward the arts and about American society itself. Broyles starts by examining the careers of three notably unconventional composers: William Billings in the eighteenth century, Anthony Philip Heinrich in the nineteenth, and Charles Ives in the twentieth. All three had unusual lives, wrote music that many considered incomprehensible, and are now recognized as key figures in the development of American music. Broyles goes on to investigate the proliferation of eccentric individualism in all types of American music—classical, popular, and jazz—and how it has come to dominate the image of diverse creative artists from John Cage to Frank Zappa. The history of the maverick tradition, Broyles shows, has much to tell us about the role of music in American culture and the tension between individualism and community in the American consciousness.
