It would be a combination of two concepts, ADULT DAY CARE (ADC) and VOLUNTEER CENTER. The Volunteer Adult Day Center (VADC) would be a community based group program. The VADC to treat elderly patients with depression would utilize a series of therapeutic interventions based on Psychopharmacology, Behavioral activation treatment for depression (BATD), Volunteer Work, and Activities aiming at reducing a variety of symptoms relating to Depression. The program would serve the elderly population between the ages of 65 and over with depression to help them gain effective coping skills in dealing with both their psychological reactions and any loss of function they may have sustained. This program offers a relatively low cost option for addressing a common and potentially debilitating problem among the elderly. It takes advantage of the benefits of a Faith Community-Health System Partnership. And it would combine a demonstratively effective psychological intervention with elements like volunteerism and spirituality often associated with a religious orientation. Furthermore, patients, who have benefited from receiving and giving help, can continue working as volunteers in the center as a part of treatment maintenance. They would not only work as volunteers, but at the same time they will participate in different activities, thus continuously receiving follow up health benefits from the program.
