Book excerpt: Um estudo probabilístico foi conduzido, com base em dados mensais de precipitação, visando permitir prognosticar o comportamento das chuvas, em época e quantidade, para a região do Seridó, no Rio Grande do Norte. A região está localizada entre as latitudes de 6o e 7o Sul e entre as longitudes de 36o15' e 37o30' a Oeste de Greenwich, na zona semi-árida do Estado. O objetivo do referido prognóstico é o de possibilitar o planejamento das épocas de plantio de modo a melhorar o aproveitamento da pluviosidade na produção agrícola, com uma margem aceitável (75%) de confiabilidade, bem como identificar áreas onde as chances de sucesso da agricultura de sequeiro são razoáveis, se carecem de irrigação suplementar, ou dependem quase certamente da irrigação contínua. O estudo abrange os 19 municípios mais representativos da região, com séries de dados pluviométricos variando de 18 a 72 anos. Foram construídos quadros mostrando os valores prováveis de precipitação para os vários meses do ano, a diferentes níveis de probabilidade.
