Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatment of Internal Diseases: For Physicians and Students Professor Ortner has so extensively altered the fifth edition of his popular book upon the treatment of internal diseases that it has been necessary to revise completely and reset the translation for the second English edition. Professor Fronz, of Vienna, has entirely rewritten and so very strikingly improved the chapters upon children's diseases. Dr. Bartlett has translated the German text into idiomatic English, and, without losing the spirit or the details of the original, he has materially condensed the work. The scope of the book is indicated in its title. The author initiates the reader into as much of the pathological physiology of the diseases discussed as bears upon their rational treatment. He very properly emphasizes throughout the volume the importance of the mechanical, dietetic, climatic, hydrotherapeutic, and other extra-medicinal methods, with judicious reasons for those selected, and follows these with a discussion of the applicability of certain drugs, their respective advantages, disadvantages, and limitations, adds useful prescriptions from his own experience and that of others, and leaves the reader better armed to meet etiological indications and the various contingencies which arise and require symptomatic treatment. The prescriptions have been altered to conform to the American Pharmacopoeia, and the equivalents in the English scale of measures have been added to the metric quantities. In this new edition there are a number of changes in the prescriptions and in the indications and recommendations for modern drugs. The editor has endeavored to comply with the suggestions of the Council of Pharmacy and Chemistry, of the American Medical Association, and so has omitted those drugs recommended by the author which have not been sanctioned by this body. All temperatures have been transposed into the Fahrenheit scale. The references in climatology, hygiene, and dietetics have been adapted to the needs of the American student and practitioner. The medicinal waters recommended by the author have been tabulated, and to them have been added tables of the corresponding and most important American waters. Some of the lists of drugs have also been arranged in tables convenient for ready reference. Numerous American sanatoria for patients with tuberculosis have been mentioned. Copious notes (inserted in brackets, [ ]) have been added to contribute further therapeutic resources from authoritative American and English clinicians, as well as to illustrate differences in opinion. The editor has also rewritten several sections and added a chapter upon the treatment of neurasthenia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Diagnosis: Special Diagnosis of Internal Medicine; A Handbook for Physicians and Students Wheiv a student of medicine in Germany, the Diagnosis of Leube always impressed itself upon the editor as a plain, practical work which described disease and the various differential points in such a lucid man ner that it has always been his wish to give to the English-reading pro fessionthe advantages of this storehouse of bedside knowledge. The fact that a medical work has appeared in its sixth edition in the course of twelve years is sufficient evidence of its value. The main features of this text-book consist in the explicit difierential diagnoses. If it is true that rational treatment depends upon the accuracy of diagnosis, the fundamen tal requirements of the therapist will be diagnosis in its broadest sense; not only the ability to recognise the true nature of the affection, but the knowledge of its course, complications and eventual termination. 'the author has been signally successful in presenting some of the most difficult problems of the diagnosis of Internal Diseases in a clear, concise man ner, never attempting the impossible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophylaxis and Treatment of Internal Diseases: Designed for the Use of Practitioners and of Advanced Students of Medicine This book has been written for physicians and for advanced students. It embodies the results of thirty years' experience in hospital and private practice, and is only a compilation in so far as it deals with the prophylaxis and treatment of tropical diseases, which are now of great importance, and where my experience has been lacking. In these eases I have consulted and abstracted the literature which I have thought most reliable. Those methods of treatment which have been most serviceable to me are invariably mentioned first, and are followed by other useful methods, and by such as are recommended by accepted authorities. The methods recommended for prophylaxis and therapy are such as can be carried out in private practice, and when for any reason hospital or sanatorium treatment is needed, or when I have had no experience with the therapy recommended by others, the statement is explicitly made. It has been my aim to consider all the modern methods of treatment as they are of the utmost importance. It will be seen, therefore, that much space is devoted to hydrotherapy, gymnastics, exercises, diet, and always with a view to their adaptation to private practice. When this is not possible, such places are named as have seemed to me to be of most value. The diet recommended can be obtained in any American household, and the food values are taken from a table of American foods prepared by Atwater, which is found in the Appendix. It is taken for granted that only the best drugs will be chosen, and those drugs which are prepared in this country can usually be obtained from many reliable sources; I have, therefore, refrained from mentioning the names of manufacturers. Most of those made abroad can be obtained only from one source, so that there is no choice. The dosage is always that which has served me best, and both the metric and English systems of measures and weights are given as the metric system is official and the English the one in most common use. Whenever it is necessary, either because a remedy should be given in a certain way or because a combination of remedies has stood the test of long experience, a prescription is added. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Internal Medicine Doubtless there has rarely been a teacher of medicine who has been satisfied with the books which his students have had to use. The large treatises are too long, too rich in information for those entering upon the study of medicine, while many of the shorter works are mere cata logues of facts. It has seemed to the writer, after many years' teaching, that there was a distinct need both among students and practitioners of a work which Should give in compact form the more important facts of the subjects included in the domain' of internal medicine. Just as the modern builder rears his frame-work of steel and upon this suspends the walls, the floors and the ornamentation of his building, so the student must outline his subject in his mind, and later add the details. The beauty of the building will depend upon the finish, its strength must lie in the frame work. The purpose of the present work is to supply the frame work of internal medicine. The title has been chosen in recognition of the need of a term which shall denote those subjects left of the older practice of medicine when all the specialties have been subtracted from it, those subjects which are, after all, the fundamentals of our study. The arrangement of the subjects has been dictated by the wish to put the simpler first, and to present Something of a logical order of study. The placing of some subjects, such as that of small-pox, among diseases due to animal parasites, is questionable, but in such instances it has seemed well to follow the best leading we have at present, although we may be. Uncertain of its correctness. The final classification of many of the familiar diseases must long remain doubtful. Syphilis has for years been regarded as surely a bacterial disease and classified accordingly. The recent studies apparently prove the specific organism to belong to the lower orders of the animal kingdom. At any time further investi gation may restore the disease to its older position In like manner the specific agents of scarlet fever, measles, and other exanthemata are as sumed to be bacteria, and these diseases are placed accordingly. The eager investigations now going on in so many laboratories may any day give one or more of these diseases a new position. We must act upon our present knowledge, with full consciousness that much of it may to morrow require revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Internal Medicine, Vol. 1 of 3: A Work for the Practicing Physician on Diagnosis and Treatment, With a Complete Desk Index In the making Of a. Handbook of this kind it is necessary to draw at every step upon the great fund of acquired information which has become the common property of the profession. To those whose contributions have formed that fund and to those who are daily adding to it I tender grateful acknowledgment for its use. I have mentioned by name those to whose work I have especially referred, but, as a general rule, it has been impracticable for want of space to append systematic references to the literature. The illustrations are in large part drawn from personal observations. They have been selected solely with the View to elucidate the subject in hand. Diagrams have been employed when this method of presentation has appeared desirable, and the free use of clinical charts constitutes an important feature of the work.
