Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small Canadian cities confront serious social issues as a result of the neoliberal economic restructuring practiced by both federal and provincial governments since the 1980s. Drastic spending reductions and ongoing restraint in social assistance, income supports, and the provision of affordable housing, combined with the offloading of social responsibilities onto municipalities, has contributed to the generalization of social issues once chiefly associated with Canada’s largest urban centres. As the investigations in this volume illustrate, while some communities responded to these issues with inclusionary and progressive actions others were more exclusionary and reactive—revealing forms of discrimination, exclusion, and “othering” in the implementation of practices and policies. Importantly, however their investigations reveal a broad range of responses to the social issues they face. No matter the process and results of the proposed solutions, what the contributors uncovered were distinctive attributes of the small city as it struggles to confront increasingly complex social issues. If local governments accept a social agenda as part of its responsibilities, the contributors to Small Cities, Big Issues believe that small cities can succeed in reconceiving community based on the ideals of acceptance, accommodation, and inclusion.

Book excerpt: Alexandria -- a town of about 3,500 people in Glengarry County in Eastern Ontario -- conforms in some respects to the stereotype of small towns as friendly communities without the strains of city life. Although David Rayside found Alexandria to be a pleasant town, in this penetrating study he reveals that this community, which includes an almost equal mix of anglophones and francophones, is also marked by social inequalities and divisions that parallel those in urban centres.

Book excerpt: Revitalising Communities in a Globalising World explores the opportunities and constraints that the dynamics of globalisation present for human development in a range of different countries and situations. Arguing that globalisation is currently a system of organising social relations along neoliberal lines, this timely volume examines practical examples of how people respond to significant social changes in their communities. The idea of communities is deconstructed to show that globalisation has collapsed the boundaries of time, space and place in ways that have exacerbated inequalities, at the same time giving rise to unparalleled riches for some. The book encompasses a number of case studies that speak to policymakers, practitioners, educators and students interested in studying globalisation and making the most of its potential for change.

Book excerpt: 'Community' continues to be a persistent theme in political, philosophical and policy debates. The idea of community poses fundamental questions about social inclusion and exclusion, particular versus general interests, identity and belonging. As well as extensive theoretical literature in the social sciences, there is a rich body of social research aimed at exploring the nature of community, and evaluating its contribution to people's lives and well-being. Drawing on a wealth of international empirical examples and illustrations, this book reviews debates surrounding the idea of community. It examines changing patterns of community life and evaluates their importance for society and for individuals. As well as urban, rural and class-based communities, it explores other contemporary forms of community, such as social movements, communes and 'virtual' gatherings in cyberspace. Truly multidisciplinary, this book will be of interest to students of sociology, geography, political science and social policy and welfare. Grounded in a wide-ranging review of empirical research, it provides an overview of sociological debates surrounding the idea of community and relating them to the part community plays in people's everyday conceptions of identity.

Book excerpt: Should we be more concerned that collapsing share values and widespread corporate failure and fraud beg some serious questions about the viability of the present world economy? Harry Shutt persuasively demonstrates that the present crisis is the culmination of 30 years of deepening stagnation. Faced with a long-term trend of reduced demand for both capital and labor the world economy has only avoided a vast recession through growing reliance on official subsidy and market distortion. Shutt points out that regulatory reform can only work by limiting profitability but that a more sustainable model is unacceptable to ruling elites. He outlines an agenda for fundamental changes, based on the premise that the primacy of private profit is no longer compatible with the priorities of modern democracies.

It covers a wide range of topics organized around some of the most common themes that urban geographers have addressed in their study of large cities. In addition to a general introduction and conclusion, the book is divided into three parts. Part I focuses on the evolution and growth of small cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of busy, complex Regional City -- and it is a real city -- the author has analyzed the power structure from top to bottom. He has searched out the men of power and, under fictitious names, has described them as they initiate policies in their offices, their homes, their clubs. They form a small, stable group at the top of the social structure. Their decision-making activities are not known to the public, but they are responsible for whatever is done, or not done, in their community. Beneath this top policy group is a clearly marked social stratification, through which decisions sift down to the substructures chosen to put them into effect. The dynamic relations within the power structure are made clear in charts, but the real interest lies in the author's report of what people themselves say. The African American community is also studied, with its own power structure and its own complicated relations with the large community. The method of study is fully described in an Appendix. The book should be of particular value to sociologists, political scientists, city-planning executives, Community Council members, social workers, teachers, and research workers in related fields. As a vigorous and readable presentation of facts, it should appeal to the reader who would like to know how his/her own community is run. Community Power Structure is not an expose. It is a description and discussion of a social phenomenon as it occured. It is based on sound field research, including personal observation and interviews by the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More people are now living below the poverty line in Canada that at any previous time in our history, even as our society as a whole becomes more afluent. At the same time, the middle class is reclaiming the inner cities, replacing old affordable housing for the poor with upscale real estate. And mentally ill Canadians, traditionally cared for in institutions, have been moved en masse into local communities which have neither planned for the influx nor allocated the resources for dealing with the strain it has put on special housing. The convergence of these economic, social and health care trends has left thousands homeless. Barbara Murphy's On the Street examines the circumstances that have led to this situation and explores possible remedies. Her cogent arguments and lucid style make this a must-read for any Canadian who cares about the kind of society we are creating.
