A obra propõe-se a analisar em que medida o processo formativo oferecido pela Prefeitura Municipal de Vitória (ES) atende às necessidades dos docentes de Língua Inglesa que fazem parte dessa rede de ensino. Para tanto, a autora conduziu um estudo de caso objetivando identificar as necessidades e os desejos formativos dos docentes em exercício, coletando informações por meio de questionários, como também entrevistou gestores responsáveis pelo programa de formação. Tendo os resultados revelados de que o processo formativo oferecido não atendia às necessidades dos professores, nasceu a motivação para a elaboração, a título de contribuição, de um roteiro sugestivo de ações formativas. Tal roteiro atende às exigências e aos preceitos de documentos diretivos, tanto nacionais quanto municipais, e vai ao encontro do que os estudiosos da área sugerem como desejável para a formação contínua de professores de Língua Inglesa e das necessidades/desejos manifestados pelos professores envolvidos.

Book excerpt: Este estudo, de natureza qualitativa, tem como objectivo a análise de necessidades de formação contínua de vinte professoras que leccionam os quatro primeiros anos do ensino fundamental, em duas escolas de Lisboa e duas da cidade de São Paulo, as quais decorrem da integração de alunos com necessidades educativas especiais (NEE) no sistema regular do ensino público. Como suporte metodológico, utilizámos a entrevista semi-directiva às professoras e a consulta de documentos (legislação que suporta a integração e documentação que a situa face aos contextos em que ocorre). As necessidades de formação foram elaboradas a partir do relacionamento dos dados que resultaram da análise de conteúdo das entrevistas e da legislação, tendo em conta os estádios do desenvolvimento da carreira docente, na perspectiva de alguns autores. Os dados obtidos permitem-nos concluir que: 5 a entrevista se configura como um excelente instrumento de trabalho, que permite recolher informação pertinente e útil, a partir da qual é possível elaborar, em conjunto com os formandos, programas de formação; 5 embora a integração escolar dos alunos com NEE seja uma inovação dos dois sistemas educativos em causa, os professores não tiveram formação nesse sentido 6 as dificuldades/motivações para a formação contínua que nos referiram vão ao encontro das competências definidas pela legislação; 5 as necessidades de formação evidenciam que a grande dificuldade destas professoras consiste, sobretudo, em atender populações diversificadas; 5 a devolução dos dados às professoras mobilizou particularmente o corpo docente das escolas onde este estudo decorreu, o que nos leva a presumir que esta é uma estratégia de formação contínua eficaz para a integração escolar de todos os alunos e em particular daqueles que têm NEE, na medida em que contribui para (re)pensar e (re)formular práticas e metodologias de intervenção com os alunos, que podem, por outro lado, contribuir para a articulação teórico-prática da formação in.

Em diálogo com estudiosos da área, considera-se que as necessidades formativas são diversas, amplas, complexas e provenientes da organização escolar, do currículo, do convívio com os pares, do tempo de carreira, de experiências formativas e profissionais, de motivações profissionais, de elementos da vida pessoal, da rotina pedagógica – fatores nem sempre conscientes para os envolvidos. Apontamentos da investigação sugerem a reorganização da formação continuada e de procedimentos de análise de necessidades nas pesquisas e nas propostas formativas para professores.

Book excerpt: The Carandiru House of Detention, in the teeming city of São Paulo, was the largest and most crowded prison in Latin America. Known as the 'Old House', it was also highly unusual in the way it was governed. Closed to the outside world, and even largely to the wardens, it was run almost entirely by the inmates themselves, who created a unique society complete with politics, hierarchies and a system of justice. In 1989, at the height of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil, with only a handful of physicians attempting to treat an inmate population of over 7,000, the medical situation at Carandiru was dire. A city doctor, Drauzio Varella, volunteered his time at Carandiru over the course of thirteen years, in an effort to combat the rampant disease. As he gained the inmates' trust he was given access to their society, where he was overwhelmed by the profound humanity and freedom of spirit shown by these men, despite their terrible crimes and the inhuman conditions in which they lived. Lockdown is Varella's powerful depiction of life on the inside, wherein he recounts the prisoners' colourful and surprising stories. The book ends with the massacre by the police of the prisoners that ultimately brought down the 'Old House'.
