Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do the professional standards mean for teachers and school leaders? Everyone working in education needs a clear understanding of the professional standards required of teachers and school leaders. Written by a team of expert and well-respected contributors, this book provides the definitive guide to the standards that are now widely used for initial teacher training, induction, continuing professional development and performance management. In addition it covers the standards for subject leaders, which underpin the national programme for subject leaders, and the standards for headteachers, which are now used as an essential requirement for headship. The main element of each of the standards reflects the broad dimensions of teaching and leadership, covering everything from planning and assessing learning to relations with the wider community and managing one's own performance and development. Clearly explaining the nature of the standards the writers demonstrate how they relate to the real world of teaching and leadership and point out key issues for the future. The final chapters of the book set the application of standards into a more critical framework and suggest how the standards can meet future as well as current needs.

This book is the essential guide to the application of these standards in the classroom. The text supports you to interpret the standards effectively and independently, and to apply them to your teaching. The chapters mirror the standards themselves and practical guidance and classroom-based examples help link theory to practice. The text also enables you to enhance your understanding of the standards and improve your teaching and professional practice. This second edition has been updated to include notes on the new OFSTED framework and the new National Curriculum. Also included are more questions to help trainee teachers think around the standards in relation to placements and assess how and whether they have met the requirements.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest resources a school has is its staff. How teachers themselves, and their work, are defined are therefore matters of utmost importance. Major trends of increased control and 'new mangerialism' are occurring in most OECD countries, radically altering both the content and form of teacher education. This book outlines recent changes in teacher education and professional development and, by drawing on recent research findings, explores the positive and negative impacts on the nature of teaching and the shape of the profession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the current emphasis on standards in the schools, one may think that this is a new phenomenon. However, as this pamphlet clearly demonstrates, while standards in American schools have a long history dating back to Reconstruction, the recommendations for what is needed to improve teacher education are remarkably similar—brighter students, more realistic classes, rigorous general education, serious evaluation, and so on. The reports and guidelines share a zeal for the standards they are promulgating, but are thin on research to support their recommendations. The irony is that the 'profession's power is so fragmented, and its prestige so ailing,' that adequate support for teacher education and professional practice remain elusive. The report concludes that only a concerted effort by a coalition of organizations could generate the support needed to achieve a major breakthrough in the quality of schooling and teacher education.
