Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proclus was the most important figure in Neo-Platonism when it was established as the dominant philosophy of Late Antiquity. Neo-Platonism is not only the final flowering of Greek thought but also the mode in which it was transmitted to the Byzantine, Western European and Islamic civilisations. Stripping away the complexities surrounding this traditionally difficult philosopher, Lucas Siorvanes takes the reader through Proclus' metaphysics and theory of knowledge with original research examining all aspects of Proclus' work. This is the first book which places Proclus in his complete intellectual context and sheds new light on aspects of Proclus' thought, to which previous scholars have rarely done justice. - Presents a general survey of Proclus and his Neo-Platonism- Introduces results of original research, mainly on his metaphysics, theory of knowledge and science. All areas of Proclus' philosophical interest are covered including religion, physics, astronomy, mathematics and poetry. His philosophy is found in all these because concern with being and truth is central to all. Also introduced is the neglected area of his natural philosophy with its remarkable freshness of thought punctuated by the rejection of Aristotelian science and Ptolemy's cosmology. In this book, Proclus is shown as much more than just a metaphysician.

Book excerpt: Pythagorean harmonic theory, as well as questions about the way in which the World Soul knows both Forms and the visible reality that constitutes its body. This part of Proclus' Commentary is particularly responsive to the interpretive tradition that precedes it. As a result, this volume is especially significant for the study of the Platonic tradition from the earliest commentators onwards." --Book Jacket.

Leading scholars examine how the Platonists of late antiquity sought to understand and explain natural phenomena: their essays offer a new understanding of the metaphysics of Platonism, and its place in the history of science.

Book excerpt: Proclus' commentary on Plato's "Timaeus" is perhaps the most important surviving Neoplatonic commentary. In it Proclus contemplates nature's mysterious origins and at the same time employs the deductive rigour required to address perennial philosophical questions. Nature, for him, is both divine and mathematically transparent. He renders theories of Time, Eternity, Providence, Evil, Soul and Intellect and constructs an elaborate ontology that includes mathematics and astronomy. He gives ample play to pagan theology too, frequently lapsing into the arcane language of the "Chaldaean Oracles". "Ten Gifts of the Demiurge" is an essential companion to this rich but complex and densely wrought text, providing an analysis of its arguments and showing that it, like the cosmos Proclus reveres, is a living coherent whole. The book provides aides to understanding Proclus' work within the complex background of Neoplatonic philosophy, familiarising the reader with the political context of the Athenian school, analysing Proclus' key terminology, and giving background to the philosophical arguments and ancient sciences upon which Proclus draws.Above all, it helps the reader appreciate the varicoloured light that Proclus sheds on the secrets of nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of Proclus' commentary on Plato's Parmenides. Glenn Morrow's death occurred while he was less than halfway through the translation, which was completed by John Dillon. A major work of the great Neoplatonist philosopher, the commentary is an intellectual tour de force that greatly influenced later medieval and Renaissance thought. As the notes and introductory summaries explain, it comprises a full account of Proclus' own metaphysical system, disguised, as is so much Neoplatonic philosophy, in the form of a commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man performs many things for the sake of personal gain, health, and riches and, surveying the good which they contain, abandons the love of justice. Because the just subsists in the soul, the profitable will also be in the soul. Where our good resides, there also we have our being. For, where the form of man is, there also is the perfection of man. In soul therefore is the man, not in body. The desire of the good preserves those by whom it is desired. The good is bound in souls according to the just, through the beautiful which is their medium and bond. The good lives in the gods, the beautiful in intellects, the just in souls. Being–life–intellect is the first triune procession from the ineffable Cause of All. Being is superior to life, and life to intellect. What is just is good and vice versa: the beautiful is their medium and bond. What is just is true and vice versa: for, Justice is Truth. The just maintains order and harmony about the whole soul. Justice is the source of beauty to the soul, and is itself beautiful. The just gives empire to reason, and servitude to the irrational nature. The just is at one and the same time perfect, moderate, bounded, and beautiful. Everything just, therefore, is beautiful. Everything beautiful is good and vice-versa. The beautiful is naturally lovely because it calls others to itself and charms those who can behold it. It agitates souls at first sight while retaining a vestige of divine beauty. Let no one say that the good is above beauty. They both live within us, they are rightly desirable, and can be obtained through love.

This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Proclus' commentary on Plato's Timaeus records Proclus' exegesis of Timaeus 27a-31b, in which Plato first discusses preliminary matters that precede his account of the creation of the universe, and then moves to the account of the creation of the universe as a totality. For Proclus this text is a grand opportunity to reflect on the nature of causation as it relates to the physical reality of our cosmos. The commentary deals with many subjects that have been of central interest to philosophers from Plato's time onwards, such as the question whether the cosmos was created in time, and the nature of evil as it relates to physical reality and its ontological imperfection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the historical end of the Platonic tradition in relation to creation theories of the natural world through the Neoplatonist philosopher Proclus' (412-485) elaboration of an investigation of Plato's theory of metaphysical archetypal Forms. Proclus proceeds to a systematic construction of this theory and grounds it in ontological monism. He presents the Forms as constructing, through their combinations, the presuppositions for the creation of the natural world, in such a way that it functions in an orderly and harmonious way, showing the natural world is not produced by chance or means of automatizations, but on the basis of a teleological planning. This volume also reflects Proclus' dealing with the topics of objective reality and the nature of the "universals."
