Book excerpt: The United States of America has been blessed with the world’s greatest political success formula. In a little over a century, this formula allowed a small segment of the human family—less than 6 percent—to become the richest nation on earth. It allowed them to create more than half of the world’s total output in production and enjoy the highest standard of living in the history of the world. In this book, we learn how the Founding Fathers discovered this success formula. Much of this discovery is told in the words of the Founders themselves, so that the reader can feel the power of their minds sweeping away thousands of years of bad government and illogical laws to formulate a whole new society based on human freedom. By returning to the roots of the Founders’ thinking, and contemplating the logic that they used in establishing the Constitution, we can better understand the challenges and solutions that confront us in today’s political world. This eBook includes the original index, illustrations, footnotes, table of contents and page numbering from the printed format.

Book Synopsis When Slavery Was Called Freedom by : John Patrick Daly
Download or read book When Slavery Was Called Freedom written by John Patrick Daly and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Slavery Was Called Freedom uncovers the cultural and ideological bonds linking the combatants in the Civil War era and boldly reinterprets the intellectual foundations of secession. John Patrick Daly dissects the evangelical defense of slavery at the heart of the nineteenth century's sectional crisis. He brings a new understanding to the role of religion in the Old South and the ways in which religion was used in the Confederacy. Southern evangelicals argued that their unique region was destined for greatness, and their rhetoric gave expression and a degree of coherence to the grassroots assumptions of the South. The North and South shared assumptions about freedom, prosperity, and morality. For a hundred years after the Civil War, politicians and historians emphasized the South's alleged departures from national ideals. Recent studies have concluded, however, that the South was firmly rooted in mainstream moral, intellectual, and socio-economic developments and sought to compete with the North in a contemporary spirit. Daly argues that antislavery and proslavery emerged from the same evangelical roots; both Northerners and Southerners interpreted the Bible and Christian moral dictates in light of individualism and free market economics. When the abolitionist's moral critique of slavery arose after 1830, Southern evangelicals answered the charges with the strident self-assurance of recent converts. They went on to articulate how slavery fit into the "genius of the American system" and how slavery was only right as part of that system.
Book Synopsis Break It Down and Make It Plain by : Roy W. Johnsen
Download or read book Break It Down and Make It Plain written by Roy W. Johnsen and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been my pleasure to know Roy since he assumed his final pastorate prior to retirement, Westgate Baptist Church in Lancaster, Pa. As the shepherd of our small, older congregation, he brought the priceless lessons of biblical relevance and human relationships gained from his outreach in pulpits and prisons. Out of his work and that of his wife, Judy, Westgate became a multicultural congregation with a vision of mission that has engaged hearts and hands. And in all of his work, Roy has given uncompromising credit to God, and to the journey of ministry and understanding in which God has guided him. In the pages that follow you will experience many chapters and moments from that journey. You will feel the painful anguish of broken lives, and the joyous renewal of wholeness through Gods love. You will indeed meet the least of these, and the faithful response of seeing Christ in them. You likely will see possibilities for your own ministry, your own spiritual growth. Almost certainly, you will be challenged, enlightened and inspired. I invite you now to begin a story that reveals in so many ways Gods care and provision, a narrative of one mans life of trust in Gods leading and in what can be accomplished through that trust. ---Richard W. Schramm, former Deputy General Secretary for Communication, American Baptist Churches USA
Download or read book Proclaim Liberty written by Carl Anderson and published by Image. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's history has been shaped by the sacrifice and witness of millions who have exercised in extraordinary ways our nation's guarantee of religious freedom. Historians have referred to these periods as "Great Awakenings." In this ebook, comprised of three talks Carl Anderson gave between April and August 2012, the author argues that all people of faith ought to approach politics in an effort to transform the divisiveness and hostility in today's political arena into a society in which every person is respected and valued—a society that Pope John Paul II has called a "Civilization of Love."
Book Synopsis Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land by : Mark David Hall
Download or read book Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land written by Mark David Hall and published by Fidelis Books. This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars and popular authors regularly claim that Christianity, at least orthodox Christianity, has fostered oppression and intolerance. A common narrative is that liberty and equality have been advanced primarily when America’s leaders embrace progressive manifestations of religion or reject faith altogether. Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land demonstrates that Christianity is responsible for advancing liberty and equality for all citizens. Throughout American history, Christians have been motivated by their faith to create fair and just institutions, fight for political freedom, oppose slavery, and secure religious liberty for all. The New York Times’s 1619 Project is only a recent and prominent manifestation of the tendency of journalists, academics, and popular writers to portray American Christianity as a force of oppression and intolerance. Without shying away from the ways in which the Christian faith has been used to defend and even encourage harmful practices, Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land shows that it has far more often been a force for good. From the American Puritans—who created some of the most republican and free institutions the world had ever seen—to America’s founders’ opposition to slavery, to contemporary Christian legal advocacy groups that fight to protect religious liberty for everyone, this volume offers an important corrective to those who would downplay the role Christianity has played in advancing liberty and equality for all citizens.

Book Synopsis Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land by : Edwin S. Gaustad
Download or read book Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land written by Edwin S. Gaustad and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should prayer be allowed in public schools? Should biology be taught according to Darwin or to the book of Genesis? Why is polygamy against the law? These are just a few of the questions that touch our lives directly and emerge out of the separation of church and state. In this volume, one of the most distinguished scholars of American religious history traces the complicated relationship of church and state from the early colonial period, through the unique American experiment in religious liberty after the Revolution, to the ongoing debate over religious issues in our schools and communities. Edwin Gaustad relates entertaining and edifying accounts of headline-grabbing court trials involving polygamy, witchcraft, and church taxation. Book Synopsis War and Independence In Spanish America by : Anthony McFarlane
Download or read book War and Independence In Spanish America written by Anthony McFarlane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period from 1808 to 1826, the Spanish empire was convulsed by wars throughout its dominions in Iberia and the Americas. The conflicts began in Spain, where Napoleon’s invasion triggered a war of national resistance. The collapse of the Spanish monarchy provoked challenges to the colonial regime in virtually all of Spain's American provinces, and colonial demands for autonomy and independence led to political turbulence and violent confrontation on a transcontinental scale. During the two decades after 1808, Spanish America witnessed warfare on a scale not seen since the conquests three centuries earlier. War and Independence in Spanish America provides a unified account of war in Spanish America during the period after the collapse of the Spanish government in 1808. McFarlane traces the courses and consequences of war, combining a broad narrative of the development and distribution of armed conflict with analysis of its characteristics and patterns. He maps the main arenas of war, traces the major campaigns by and crucial battles between rebels and royalists, and places the military conflicts in the context of international political change. Readers will come away with a fully realized understanding of how war and military mobilization affected Spanish American societies and shaped the emerging independent states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begun by Puritans, the American jeremiad, a rhetoric that expresses indignation and urges social change, has produced passionate and persuasive essays and speeches throughout the nation's history. Showing that black leaders have employed this verbal tradition of protest and social prophecy in a way that is specifically African-American, David Howard-Pitney examines the jeremiads of Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Ida B. Wells, W.E. B. DuBois, Mary McLeod Bethune, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, as well as more contemporary figures such as Jesse Jackson and Alan Keyes. This revised and expanded edition demonstrates that the African American jeremiad is a still vibrant tradition, serving as a barometer of faith in America's perfectibility and hope for social justice. Features: a new chapter on Malcolm X updated discussion of Jesse Jackson new discussion of Alan Keyes
