Download or read book The Dismal State of the Great Lakes written by James P. Ludwig, Ph. D and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ludwig tells powerful stories about places, people and environmental issues. He narrates with unfl inching honesty his experiences investigating and tracking down the culprits in continuing environmental contamination. He rises to meet the beauty and grace of the Great Lakes with lively tales of decades out on their waters as a researcher. This book is an indispensable part of the Great Lakes literary canon." Dave Dempsey, author of "On the Brink: The Great Lakes in the 21st Century" and "The Blanchard Connection". "Ludwig has written a monumental compendium about the largest source of fresh water in the world, a life support system whose function he reveals has been under siege. It refl ects what happened as peer reviewed science, public health, and common sense were set aside and corporate-creep infected the chambers where policy decisions are made. It also parallels the same problem where humanity is now under siege from a growing list of epidemics of endocrine-related disorders the problem fi rst reported by Ludwig and his cronies back in the early 80s." Theo Colborn, Ph.D President, The Endocrine Disruption Exchange
Book Synopsis Herpetological Osteopathology by : Bruce M. Rothschild
Download or read book Herpetological Osteopathology written by Bruce M. Rothschild and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As scientific analysis of testable hypotheses has replaced the speculative approach to study of bone disease in recent and fossil amphibians and reptiles, the field has advanced from simply reporting observations to analyzing their implications. This process is predicated upon a reproducible data base which explains/diagnoses the nature of bony alterations and a secure review of the literature. Thereby hangs the rub. The herpetological literature are difficult to access (let alone read) and are scattered through many prominent and eclectic journals and in the lay literature. While older diagnoses often have not stood the test of time, the clarity of report descriptions usually allows confident identification of the underlying pathology.

Book Synopsis Value Management by : Roger H. Davies
Download or read book Value Management written by Roger H. Davies and published by Gower Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change programmes in both private and public sectors have a poor record of delivering their intended value. The reasons given most often for their failure include lack of executive support or buy-in from key users, loose requirements definition, weak programme management, and plain wishful thinking. They rarely include technical limitations. Value Management puts forward the view that the true problem lies in failing to understand the causal links between the intended stakeholder outcomes and the actual programme outputs. Repeating the pattern of failure can be avoided by asking two questions: - Before implementation, what capabilities must a change programme deliver, when and in what order so as to cause intended value against a defined purpose with speed and certainty? - During and after implementation, what minor adjustments and/or major shifts are needed to be certain that the programme remains on purpose and on value? and two answers to be given: - Target, time and align change programmes to deliver maximum intended value to stakeholders - the baseline business case - track and respond to changes during and beyond implementation to ensure that the programme actually delivers or exceeds intended value - value realisation. The authors show how, by asking and answering these questions, direction and delivery of any programme can be clarified and greater economic value achieved.
Book Synopsis Continuous Permanent Improvement by : Arun Hariharan
Download or read book Continuous Permanent Improvement written by Arun Hariharan and published by Quality Press. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forewords by Mikel J. Harry, Ph.D. and Dr. K.K. Nohria Continuous permanent improvement (CPI) is not a new ism. The purpose of this book is not to expound any new theory or tools, but to share experiences in implementing existing methods with a bias toward business results. In fact, one of the important lessons we have learned is that most existing models or methods, if adhered to in the right spirit, will give results. This book is a distillation of experiences and lessons learned from successes and mistakes in nearly three decades of experience, mostly working with business processes, systematic thinking, customer focus, quality, and performance measurements—in a variety of companies and industries as diverse as financial services, telecom, manufacturing, conglomerate, and management consulting. Not being about any specific companies or industries, the contents of this book can be applied in any industry—service or manufacturing or government or education or nonprofit. The target audience of this book is business, functional, and quality leaders. Business schools and students may also use it as a text or reference book for courses on business excellence or quality. It is intended to share the experience and results of organizations that have derived substantial and sustained business results by focusing on continuous permanent improvement. Its aim is to strengthen the belief of the reader in the strategic importance of CPI, because the stronger your belief, the bigger and more sustained will be your results. The book also covers challenges related to mind-sets and other change management aspects that leaders typically will need to grapple with. Some of the very effective improvement methods and tools are explained in simple language with real examples, with senior business leaders in mind.
Book Synopsis The Role of an Environmental NGO in the Landmark Florida Everglades Restoration by : Barbara K. Pryor
Download or read book The Role of an Environmental NGO in the Landmark Florida Everglades Restoration written by Barbara K. Pryor and published by Variocity. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ? in a region unlike any other place on Earth?Since the turn of the twentieth century, the American conflict between economic development and environmental conservation has been epitomized by the struggles between those who seek to develop and those who seek to protect the Everglades. In recent years the region has embraced the daunting challenge of protecting nearly 70 endangered or threatened species and restoring an ecosystem which has been profoundly altered, while still trying to meet growing human needs for space and natural resources. This environmental conflict centers around the successful implementation of an unprecedented, 38?year, $7.8 billion federal-state Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). Dr. Pryor demonstrates that most of the ecological benefits for the Everglades promised in the historic CERP are riddled with conflict over many uncertainties and decades of delays which must still be resolved in order to restore this fragile River of Grass to the highest possible level. The Role of an Environmental NGO in the Landmark Florida Everglades Restoration sheds a beacon of light on this daunting challenge, providing much needed, fresh insight into the largest and most expensive environmental restoration effort in history. Dr. Pryor clearly illuminates the critical role that an environmental NGO can play as it seeks to influence the process of resolving multiparty environmental conflict such as the historic crusade to resurrect our fragile River of Grass.Dr. Pryor offers a unique ethnography for those working with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), academicians and other tireless researchers, conflict facilitators, environmentalists, ethnographers, policymakers, scientists, students and countless other stakeholders. ?The Everglades is a test. If we pass, we may get to keep the planet.? ?Marjorie DouglassVisit Dr. Pryor's website at www.drbarbarakpryor.com.
