Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the 14th International Congress on Photosynthesis is a record of the most recent advances and emerging themes in the discipline. This volume contains over 350 contributions from some 800 participants attending the meeting in Glasgow, UK in July 2007. These range from summary overview presentations from plenary speakers to expanded content of posters presented by students and their supervisors featuring the most recent achievements in photosynthesis research. In the words of Professor Eva-Mari Aro, President of the international Society of Photosynthesis Research 2004-7, “Having been taken for granted for centuries, research in photosynthesis has now become a matter of utmost importance for the future of planet Earth...Major initiatives are underway that will use research into natural and artificial photosynthesis for sustainable energy production....”. These volumes thus provide a glimpse of the future, from the molecule to the biosphere

Download or read book Transport in Plants III written by C.R. Stocking and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems associated with the movement of water and solutes throughout the plant body have intrigued students of plants since Malpighi's conclusions in 1675 and 1679 that nutrient sap flows upward and downward in stems through vessels in both wood and bark. Steven Hale's ingenious experiments on the movement of water in plants in 1726 and Hartig's observations of sieve-tube exudation in the mid-19th century set the stage for continued intensive studies on long-range transport in plants. In spite of this interest for more than 200 years in the movement of solutes and water in plants, it has only been within the last 20 to 30 years that extensive research effort has been directed toward a critical evaluation of the interactions among the various cellular organelles. The important roles played by the exchange of metabolites in the control and regulation of cellular processes is now widely recognized, but in most instances poorly understood.
Book Synopsis Physiological Processes Limiting Plant Productivity by : C. B. Johnson
Download or read book Physiological Processes Limiting Plant Productivity written by C. B. Johnson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological Processes Limiting Plant Productivity presents the proceedings of the Thirtieth University of Nottingham Easter School in Agricultural Science held at Sutton Bonington in England on April 2-5, 1979. Contributors focus on physiological processes limiting plant growth and development in the context of agricultural productivity. Emphasis is placed on the fundamental mechanisms that underlie crop production and their control. This text is comprised of 20 chapters; the first of which discusses the genetics of crop physiology in relation to agricultural production. The range of problems that plant physiologists must address is considered, followed by an assessment of what is happening in crop physiology. A number of chapters are devoted to the utilization of light by crop plants, plant nutrition, water relations, and the effects of an adaptation to unfavorable conditions including those imposed by air pollution. The reader is also introduced to the influence of photoperiodism on crop production; gas exchange in water-stressed plants; and the use of water, solar energy, and fossil fuels in crop production. This book will be of interest to agriculturists, plant breeders, and researchers working in relevant aspects of plant biochemistry, physiology, and genetics.
Book Synopsis Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews by : Kendric C. Smith
Download or read book Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews written by Kendric C. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the science of photobiology can be divided into four categories: to develop (I) ways to optimize the beneficial effects of light on man and his environment, (2) methods to protect organisms, including man, from the detrimental effects of light, (3) photochemical tools for use in studies of life processes, and (4) photochemical therapies in medicine. To achieve these goals will require the knowledgeable collaboration of biologists, chemists, engineers, mathematicians, physicians, and physicists; because photobiology is a truly multidisciplinary science. While a multidis ciplinary science is more intellectually demanding, it also has a greater potential for unexpected breakthroughs that can occur when data from several areas of science are integrated into new concepts for theoretical or practical use. Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews continues to provide in depth coverage of the many specialty areas of photobiology. It is hoped that these reviews will provide an important service to the younger scientists in the field and to senior scientists in related fields, because they provide a ready access to the recent literature in the field, and more importantly, they frequently offer a critical evaluation of the direction that the field is taking, or suggest a redirection when appropriate. Since it is important that this review series remain responsive to the needs of photochemists and photobiologists, the Editor would value com ments and suggestions from its readers.
Download or read book C4 Plant Biology written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-12-21 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to many issues related to long-term carbon dynamics, an improved understanding of the biology of C4 photosynthesis is required by more than the traditional audience of crop scientists, plant physiologists, and plant ecologists. This work synthesizes the latest developments in C4 biochemistry, physiology, systematics, and ecology. The book concludes with chapters discussing the role of C4 plants in the future development of the biosphere, particularly their interactive effects on soil, hydrological, and atmospheric processes.

Book Synopsis Primary Productivity in the Sea by : Paul Falkowski
Download or read book Primary Productivity in the Sea written by Paul Falkowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primary productivity in the sea accounts for ~30% of the total global annual production. Holistic understanding of the factors determining marine productivity requires detailed knowl edge of algal physiology and of hydrodynamics. Traditionally studies of aquatic primary productivity have heen conducted hy workers in two major schools: experimental laboratory biology, and empirical field ecology. Here an attempt was made .to hring together people from both schools to share information and con cepts; each author was charged with reviewing his field of exoer tise. The scope of the Symposium is broad, which we feel is its strength. We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Depart ment of Energy, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, including the NMFS Northeast Fisheries Center and the MESA New York Bight Project. Thanks are due to Mrs. Margaret Dienes, with out whose editorial skills this volume could not have been pro duced, and to Mrs. Helen Kondratuk as Symposium Coordinator. Finally, we wish to record our indebtedness to Dr. Alexander Hollaender for his tireless efforts and valuable advice in sup porting all aspects of this Symposium.
