Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Stockholders of the North Carolina Rail Road Co: At Their Thirtieth Annual Meeting, Held at Charlotte, July 10, 1879 The Stockholders of the North Carolina Railroad Company assembled in the Court House at 12 M., to hold their thirtieth annual meeting. The meeting was called to order by Col. Thomas M. Holt, and on his motion Mr. R. Y. McAden was called to the Chair; and on motion of Col. W. A. Myers W. L. Thornburg was requested to act as Secretary, and Captain James A. Graham and J. L. Chambers Assistant Secretaries. Mr. W. J. Yates, from the Committee on Proxies, made the following report, to-wit: The number of Stockholders represented in person 7; by proxy 427. Whole number of shares owned by individuals 10,000; whole number of shares represented in person 82, and by proxy 8,244. Total number of shares represented 8,326. On motion of Col. W. R. Myers, the report was adopted, and the meeting declared duly organized for business in accordance with the charter and by-laws. The State's interest was represented by Mr. C. M. Busbee, who presented his credentials as State proxy, which were duly recognized. The President read his annual report. On motion of Col. A. B. Springs, the reading of the reports of the Secretary and Treasurer and Committee of Finance was dispensed with. On motion of Col. A. B. Springs, the reports of the President, the Secretary and Treasurer and Committee of Finance, as printed and furnished to stockholders, were received and adopted. Capt. James A. Graham submitted the following resolution, which was unanimously adopted. Resolved, That the Board of Directors be authorized to retire from the statement of "property and resources" all securities deemed worthless; so that only the true condition of the Company will appear in the statements hereinafter to be made.
