Download or read book Radiocarbon Dating written by R.E. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a major revision and expansion of Taylor’s seminal book Radiocarbon Dating: An Archaeological Perspective. It covers the major advances and accomplishments of the 14C method in archaeology and analyzes factors that affect the accuracy and precision of 14C-based age estimates. In addition to reviewing the basic principles of the method, it examines 14C dating anomalies and means to resolve them, and considers the critical application of 14C data as a dating isotope with special emphasis on issues in Old and New World archaeology and late Quaternary paleoanthropology. This volume, again a benchmark for 14C dating, critically reflects on the method and data that underpins, in so many cases, the validity of the chronologies used to understand the prehistoric archaeological record.

Book excerpt: Radiocarbon Dating: An Archaeological Perspective provides a review of some of the major advances and accomplishments of the 14C method from an archaeological perspective. The text also provides an introduction to some of the problems and issues involved in the use of 14C data in archaeological studies. The book covers topics in radiocarbon dating, including the elements of the radiocarbon method; definition of major anomalies and the different effects of the 14C method; and sample, sample pretreatment, and measurement techniques. The evaluation of radiocarbon data and the historical development of radiocarbon dating as a method that aids in archaeological studies are also discussed. The text is recommended for archaeologists who want to know more about the theories and principles behind radiocarbon dating, its techniques, and its application in their field. The book will also be good for physicists who want to work with archaeologists and apply their knowledge in radiocarbon dating.

Download or read book Radiocarbon Dates written by Alex Bayliss and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume holds a datelist of 476 radiocarbon determinations carried out between 2002 and 2004 in support of research funded by English Heritage through the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund. It contains supporting information about the samples and the sites producing them, a comprehensive bibliography, and two indexes for reference and analysis. An introduction provides information about the scientific dating undertaken, and methods used for the analyses reported. Details of technical reports available for programmes of luminescence dating and amino-acid racemization funded under this scheme are also provided. The datelist has been collated from information provided by the submitters of samples and the dating laboratories, in order to provide easy access to raw scientific and contextual data which may be used in further research. Many of the sites and projects from which dates have been obtained are published, or are in the process of publication. Full references are given to these reports for those requiring further detail.

This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Raunds Area Project investigated more than 20 Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in the Nene Valley. From c 5000 BC to the early 1st millennium cal BC a succession of ritual mounds and burial mounds were built as settlement along the valley sides increased and woodland was cleared. Starting as a regular stopping-place for flint knapping and domestic tasks, first the Long Mound, and then Long Barrow, the north part of the Turf Mound and the Avenue were built in the 5th millennium BC. With the addition of the Long Enclosure, the Causewayed Ring Ditch, and the Southern Enclosure, there was a chain of five or six diverse monuments stretched along the river bank by c 3000 cal BC. Later, a timber platform, the Riverside Structure, was built and the focus of ceremonial activity shifted to the Cotton 'Henge', two concentric ditches on the occupied valley side. From c 2200 cal BC monument building accelerated and included the Segmented Ditch Circle and at least 20 round barrows, almost all containing burials, at first inhumations, then cremations down to c 1000 cal BC, by which time two overlapping systems of paddocks and droveways had been laid out. Finally, the terrace began to be settled when these had gone out of use, in the early 1st millennium cal BC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since World War II, there has been tremendous success in the development of new methods for dating artifacts; the so-called `radiocarbon revolution' was only the first such discovery. The increasing accuracy of the various new techniques has brought about major changes in archaeological research strategies. This important new text compiles the work of some of today's most innovative archaeologists who summarize progress in their respective techniques over the last 30 years - with an emphasis on developments of the last five - and the status of current research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid Scintillation Counting: Recent Developments presents the Proceedings of the International Symposium on Liquid Scintillation Counting, held in Sydney, Australia, on August 20-22, 1973. It summarizes the current status of recent developments in Iiquid scintillation spectrometry. It looks at the important role of liquid scintillation spectrometry in universities, laboratories and institutes involved in agriculture, biomedical science, geophysics, and nuclear physics. Organized into 32 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the scintillation process in organic molecular systems and liquid scintillation counting. It then discusses the background of a coincidence-type liquid scintillation counter, which is divided into three components. The reader is also introduced to the basic concepts involved in mathematical modeling. This volume includes papers dealing with solubilizers, spark ignition system, radiocarbon dating, benzene synthesis, liquid scintillation chemicals, luminous bacteria, and stochastic multidimensional model for liquid scintillation spectrometer. This book is a valuable source of information for scientists, agriculturists, geophysicists, and nuclear physicists.
