Book excerpt: In 1988, for the first time, the two international conferences AAECC-6 and ISSAC'88 (International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation, see Lecture Notes in Computer Science 358) have taken place as a Joint Conference in Rome, July 4-8, 1988. The topics of the two conferences are in fact widely related to each other and the Joint Conference presented a good occasion for the two research communities to meet and share scientific experiences and results. The proceedings of the AAECC-6 are included in this volume. The main topics are: Applied Algebra, Theory and Application of Error-Correcting Codes, Cryptography, Complexity, Algebra Based Methods and Applications in Symbolic Computing and Computer Algebra, and Algebraic Methods and Applications for Advanced Information Processing. Twelve invited papers on subjects of common interest for the two conferences are divided between this volume and the succeeding Lecture Notes volume devoted to ISSACC'88. The proceedings of the 5th conference are published as Vol. 356 of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Stochastic Models and Analysis of Manufacturing System Operations by : J. MacGregor Smith
Download or read book Handbook of Stochastic Models and Analysis of Manufacturing System Operations written by J. MacGregor Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-17 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook surveys important stochastic problems and models in manufacturing system operations and their stochastic analysis. Using analytical models to design and control manufacturing systems and their operations entail critical stochastic performance analysis as well as integrated optimization models of these systems. Topics deal with the areas of facilities planning, transportation, and material handling systems, logistics and supply chain management, and integrated productivity and quality models covering: • Stochastic modeling and analysis of manufacturing systems • Design, analysis, and optimization of manufacturing systems • Facilities planning, transportation, and material handling systems analysis • Production planning, scheduling systems, management, and control • Analytical approaches to logistics and supply chain management • Integrated productivity and quality models, and their analysis • Literature surveys of issues relevant in manufacturing systems • Case studies of manufacturing system operations and analysis Today’s manufacturing system operations are becoming increasingly complex. Advanced knowledge of best practices for treating these problems is not always well known. The purpose of the book is to create a foundation for the development of stochastic models and their analysis in manufacturing system operations. Given the handbook nature of the volume, introducing basic principles, concepts, and algorithms for treating these problems and their solutions is the main intent of this handbook. Readers unfamiliar with these research areas will be able to find a research foundation for studying these problems and systems.

Book Synopsis Interpreting Motion by : Inderjeet Mani
Download or read book Interpreting Motion written by Inderjeet Mani and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Motion presents an integrated perspective on how language structures constrain concepts of motion and how the world shapes the way motion is linguistically expressed. Natural language allows for efficient communication of elaborate descriptions of movement without requiring a precise specification of the motion. Interpreting Motion is the first book to analyze the semantics of motion expressions in terms of the formalisms of qualitative spatial reasoning. It shows how motion descriptions in language are mapped to trajectories of moving entities based on qualitative spatio-temporal relationships. The authors provide an extensive discussion of prior research on spatial prepositions and motion verbs, devoting chapters to the compositional semantics of motion sentences, the formal representations needed for computers to reason qualitatively about time, space, and motion, and the methodology for annotating corpora with linguistic information in order to train computer programs to reproduce the annotation. The applications they illustrate include route navigation, the mapping of travel narratives, question-answering, image and video tagging, and graphical rendering of scenes from textual descriptions. The book is written accessibly for a broad scientific audience of linguists, cognitive scientists, computer scientists, and those working in fields such as artificial intelligence and geographic information systems.
Book Synopsis Extending Explanation-Based Learning by Generalizing the Structure of Explanations by : Jude W. Shavlik
Download or read book Extending Explanation-Based Learning by Generalizing the Structure of Explanations written by Jude W. Shavlik and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending Explanation-Based Learning by Generalizing the Structure of Explanations presents several fully-implemented computer systems that reflect theories of how to extend an interesting subfield of machine learning called explanation-based learning. This book discusses the need for generalizing explanation structures, relevance to research areas outside machine learning, and schema-based problem solving. The result of standard explanation-based learning, BAGGER generalization algorithm, and empirical analysis of explanation-based learning are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the effect of increased problem complexity, rule access strategies, empirical study of BAGGER2, and related work in similarity-based learning. This publication is suitable for readers interested in machine learning, especially explanation-based learning.
Book Synopsis Finite Fields with Applications to Coding Theory, Cryptography and Related Areas by : Gary L. Mullen
Download or read book Finite Fields with Applications to Coding Theory, Cryptography and Related Areas written by Gary L. Mullen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Conference on Finite Fields and Applications, Fq6, held in the city of Oaxaca, Mexico, from May 21-25, 2001, continued a series of biennial international conferences on finite fields. This volume documents the steadily increasing interest in this topic. Finite fields are an important tool in discrete mathematics and its applications cover algebraic geometry, coding theory, cryptology, design theory, finite geometries, and scientific computation, among others. An important feature is the interplay between theory and applications which has led to many new perspectives in research on finite fields and other areas. This interplay has been emphasized in this series of conferences and certainly was reflected in Fq6. This volume offers up-to-date original research papers by leading experts in the area.
