Book excerpt: "This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Noncommutative Birational Geometry, Representations and Cluster Algebras, held from January 6-7, 2012, in Boston, MA. The papers deal with various aspects of noncommutative birational geometry and related topics, focusing mainly on structure and representations of quantum groups and algebras, braided algebras, rational series in free groups, Poisson brackets on free algebras, and related problems in combinatorics. This volume is useful for researchers and graduate students in mathematics and mathematical physics who want to be introduced to different areas of current research in the new area of noncommutative algebra and geometry."--Publisher's website.

It seems therefore futile to search for methods involving generators and relations which can be used to detect the structure of a group. Nevertheless, results in the indicated direction exist. The clue is to ask the right question. Classical geometry is a typical example in which the factorization of a motion into reflections or, more generally, of a collineation into central collineations, supplies valuable information on the geometric and algebraic structure. This mode of investigation has gained momentum since the end of last century. The tradition of geometric-algebraic interplay brought forward two branches of research which are documented in Parts I and II of these Proceedings. Part II deals with the theory of reflection geometry which culminated in Bachmann's work where the geometric information is encoded in properties of the group of motions expressed by relations in the generating involutions. This approach is the backbone of the classification of motion groups for the classical unitary and orthogonal planes. The axioms in this char acterization are natural and plausible. They provoke the study of consequences of subsets of axioms which also yield natural geometries whose exploration is rewarding. Bachmann's central axiom is the three reflection theorem, showing that the number of reflections needed to express a motion is of great importance.

Book excerpt: This book contains 22 lectures presented at the final conference of the Ger man research program (Schwerpunktprogramm) Algorithmic Number The ory and Algebra 1991-1997, sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemein schaft. The purpose of this research program and of the meeting was to bring together developers of computer algebra software and researchers using com putational methods to gain insight into experimental problems and theoret ical questions in algebra and number theory. The book gives an overview on algorithmic methods and on results ob tained during this period. This includes survey articles on the main research projects within the program: • algorithmic number theory emphasizing class field theory, constructive Galois theory, computational aspects of modular forms and of Drinfeld modules • computational algebraic geometry including real quantifier elimination and real algebraic geometry, and invariant theory of finite groups • computational aspects of presentations and representations of groups, especially finite groups of Lie type and their Heeke algebras, and of the isomorphism problem in group theory. Some of the articles illustrate the current state of computer algebra sys tems and program packages developed with support by the research pro gram, such as KANT and LiDIA for algebraic number theory, SINGULAR, RED LOG and INVAR for commutative algebra and invariant theory respec tively, and GAP, SYSYPHOS and CHEVIE for group theory and representation theory.

Book excerpt: This volume is the offspring of a week-long workshop on "Galois groups over Q and related topics," which was held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute during the week March 23-27, 1987. The organizing committee consisted of Kenneth Ribet (chairman), Yasutaka Ihara, and Jean-Pierre Serre. The conference focused on three principal themes: 1. Extensions of Q with finite simple Galois groups. 2. Galois actions on fundamental groups, nilpotent extensions of Q arising from Fermat curves, and the interplay between Gauss sums and cyclotomic units. 3. Representations of Gal(Q/Q) with values in GL(2)j deformations and connections with modular forms. Here is a summary of the conference program: • G. Anderson: "Gauss sums, circular units and the simplex" • G. Anderson and Y. Ihara: "Galois actions on 11"1 ( ••• ) and higher circular units" • D. Blasius: "Maass forms and Galois representations" • P. Deligne: "Galois action on 1I"1(P-{0, 1, oo}) and Hodge analogue" • W. Feit: "Some Galois groups over number fields" • Y. Ihara: "Arithmetic aspect of Galois actions on 1I"1(P - {O, 1, oo})" - survey talk • U. Jannsen: "Galois cohomology of i-adic representations" • B. Matzat: - "Rationality criteria for Galois extensions" - "How to construct polynomials with Galois group Mll over Q" • B. Mazur: "Deforming GL(2) Galois representations" • K. Ribet: "Lowering the level of modular representations of Gal( Q/ Q)" • J-P. Serre: - Introductory Lecture - "Degree 2 modular representations of Gal(Q/Q)" • J.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the years 2008-2012, this book profiles the life and work of recent winners of the Abel Prize: · John G. Thompson and Jacques Tits, 2008 · Mikhail Gromov, 2009 · John T. Tate Jr., 2010 · John W. Milnor, 2011 · Endre Szemerédi, 2012. The profiles feature autobiographical information as well as a description of each mathematician's work. In addition, each profile contains a complete bibliography, a curriculum vitae, as well as photos — old and new. As an added feature, interviews with the Laureates are presented on an accompanying web site (http://extras.springer.com/). The book also presents a history of the Abel Prize written by the historian Kim Helsvig, and includes a facsimile of a letter from Niels Henrik Abel, which is transcribed, translated into English, and placed into historical perspective by Christian Skau. This book follows on The Abel Prize: 2003-2007, The First Five Years (Springer, 2010), which profiles the work of the first Abel Prize winners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workshop was set up in order to stimulate the interaction between (finite and algebraic) geometries and groups. Five areas of concentrated research were chosen on which attention would be focused, namely: diagram geometries and chamber systems with transitive automorphism groups, geometries viewed as incidence systems, properties of finite groups of Lie type, geometries related to finite simple groups, and algebraic groups. The list of talks (cf. page iii) illustrates how these subjects were represented during the workshop. The contributions to these proceedings mainly belong to the first three areas; therefore, (i) diagram geometries and chamber systems with transitive automorphism groups, (ii) geometries viewed as incidence systems, and (iii) properties of finite groups of Lie type occur as section titles. The fourth and final section of these proceedings has been named graphs and groups; besides some graph theory, this encapsules most of the work related to finite simple groups that does not (explicitly) deal with diagram geometry. A few more words about the content: (i). Diagram geometries and chamber systems with transitive automorphism groups. As a consequence of Tits' seminal work on the subject, all finite buildings are known. But usually, in a situation where groups are to be characterized by certain data concerning subgroups, a lot less is known than the full parabolic picture corresponding to the building.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides an outline and modern overview of the classification of the finite simple groups. It primarily covers the 'even case', where the main groups arising are Lie-type (matrix) groups over a field of characteristic 2. The book thus completes a project begun by Daniel Gorenstein's 1983 book, which outlined the classification of groups of 'noncharacteristic 2 type'.
