Book Synopsis From NP to DP: The expression of possession in noun phrases by : Martine Coene
Download or read book From NP to DP: The expression of possession in noun phrases written by Martine Coene and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a two-volume selection of refereed and revised papers, originally presented at the international conference From NP to DP at the University of Antwerp. The papers address issues in the syntax and semantics of the noun phrase, in particular the so-called DP-hypothesis which takes noun phrases to be headed by a functional head D(eterminer). The major concerns can be grouped around 3 subthemes: the internal syntax of noun phrases, the syntax and semantics of bare nouns and indefinites and the expression of measurement in noun phrases. The wealth of data coming from over 40 different languages combined with a thorough introduction to the current issues in the field of NPs/DPs and some alternative syntactic and semantic analyses, provide a comprehensive reference work from both a descriptive and a theoretical point of view. The second volume is concerned exclusively with the expression of possession in noun phrases.
Book Synopsis Case, Argument Structure, and Word Order by : Shigeru Miyagawa
Download or read book Case, Argument Structure, and Word Order written by Shigeru Miyagawa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, a major strand of Miyagawa's research has been to study how syntax, case marking, and argument structure interact. In particular, Miyagawa's work addresses the nature of the relationship between syntax and argument structure, and how case marking and other phenomena help to elucidate this relationship. In this collection of new and revised pieces, Miyagawa expands and develops new analyses for numeral quantifier stranding, ditransitive constructions, nominative/genitive alternation, "syntactic" analysis of lexical and syntactic causatives, and historical change in the accusative case marking from Old Japanese to Modern Japanese. All of these analyses demonstrate an intimate relation among case marking, argument structure, and word order.

Book excerpt: As David Pesetsky turns 60, the contributions he has made to the field of linguistics are substantial. This volume celebrates his career, and in particular, the profound impact David has had as a teacher and mentor to over three decades of linguistics. The 60 submissions in this volume cover a wide range of syntax and syntax/semantics topics, but you will also find work on prosody, music, and even phonology. The papers in this volume employ diverse methodologies---including acquisition, computational, and experimental techniques---and focus on a rich and diverse set of languages--- including Mayan, Bantu, sign languages, Piraha, and, of course, Slavic. Viewed as a collection, these 60 papers make a powerful statement about David's breadth and impact as an advisor.

Book Synopsis Composing Questions by : Hadas Kotek
Download or read book Composing Questions written by Hadas Kotek and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the syntax and semantics of wh-questions through the lens of intervention effects, offering a new proposal on overt and covert wh-movement. In this book, Hadas Kotek investigates the syntax and semantics of wh-questions, offering a new solution to a central question in the study of interrogatives: given that overt wh-movement is cross-linguistically common, is syntactic movement a prerequisite for the interpretation of wh-phrases? Some linguists argue that all wh-phrases undergo movement to interrogative C, even if covertly; others propose mechanisms of in-situ interpretation that do not require any movement. Kotek moves beyond these positions to argue that wh-in-situ does move covertly, but not necessarily to C. Instead, she contends, wh-in-situ undergoes a short movement step akin to covert scrambling. This makes the LF behavior of English parallel to the overt behavior of German. Kotek presents a series of self-paced reading experiments, alongside judgment data from German, to substantiate the idea of covert scrambling. She introduces new diagnostics for the underlying structure of questions, using as a principal tool the distribution of intervention effects. This system allows her to offer the first unified account for a range of phenomena of interrogative syntax-semantics as pied-piping, superiority effects, the cross-linguistically varied syntax of questions, and intervention effects. Kotek develops a theory of interrogative syntax-semantics; studies the phenomena of intervention effects in wh-questions, proposing that the nature of intervention is crucially tied to the availability of wh-movement in a question; and shows that covert wh-movement should be modeled as a short scrambling operation rather than an unbounded, successive-cyclic, and potentially long-distance movement operation.
