Book Synopsis Forest Biodiversity in North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean: Research and Monitoring by : J.A. Comiskey
Download or read book Forest Biodiversity in North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean: Research and Monitoring written by J.A. Comiskey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-11-15 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two high-level, data-rich volumes from the massive Smithsonian/MAB Biological Diversity Program documenting the latest findings on forest biodiversity. In original contributions, some three hundred scientists from over forty countries discuss socioeconomic aspects, ecological monitoring and assessment, forest dynamics, growth trends, dry forests, species richness of woody regeneration and of vascular plants, hurricane impact, tropical cloud forests, Landsat-TM satellite mapping, and quantitative ethnobotany. The book covers first the research and monitoring methodologies for the New World and then the results of individual research and integrated studies on all aspects of forest biodiversity in North and South America and the Caribbean.
Book Synopsis Monitoring Environmental Materials and Specimen Banking by : N.P. Luepke
Download or read book Monitoring Environmental Materials and Specimen Banking written by N.P. Luepke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the industrial revolution, large numbers of environmentally hazardous materials are in troduced into the global environment annually; a list of all substances which are at present re garded as environmentally hazardous might contain thousands of compounds, and new substan ces are still being added. Several major activities are necessary of adequately ensure the protec tion of human health and the environment from the often subtle effects of these materials. These activities include toxicological and ecological research, control technology development, the pro mulgation of regulatory guidelines and standards, and the monitoring of environmental materials and specimen banking. In the absence of effective monitoring environmental materials and spe cimen banking, the detection of serious environmental contamination from pollutants may occur only after critical damage has been done. Environmental problems are independent of national boundaries and international collaborative programmes should be encouraged. Sponsoring organisations and other international and national bodies should encourage monitoring and specimen bank programmes and develop harmonised sy stems for data acquisition and evaluation. An international pilot programme of monitoring and specimen banking is needed and is technically feasible. The conclusions and recommendations, for both implementation and research, should be of inte rest to other international and national bodies in addition to the three organisation sponsoring this International Workshop. Nevertheless this joint sponsorship should help to assure that the re sulting conclusions and recommendations will have a worldwide audience and that effective coor dination of existing programmes will be possible.
Book Synopsis Tools, Techniques and Protocols for Monitoring Environmental Contaminants by : Satinder Kaur Brar
Download or read book Tools, Techniques and Protocols for Monitoring Environmental Contaminants written by Satinder Kaur Brar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tools, Techniques and Protocols for Monitoring Environmental Contaminants describes information on the strategic integration of available monitoring methods with molecular techniques, with a focus on omics (DNA, RNA and protein based) and molecular imprinted polymer and nanomaterial based advanced biosensors for environmental applications. It discusses the most commonly practiced analytic techniques, such as HPLC, MS, GCMS and traditional biosensors, giving an overview of the benefits of advanced biosensors over commonly practiced methods in the rapid and reliable assessment of environmental contaminants. As environmental contaminants have become one of the serious concerns in terms of their rapid growth and monitoring in the environment, which is often limited due to costly and laborious methods, this book provides a comprehensive update on their removal, the challenges they create for environmental regulatory agencies, and their diverse effects on terrestrial and aquatic environments. Provides methods for assessing and monitoring environmental contaminants Includes recent advancement in molecular techniques Outlines rapid environmental monitoring methods Explains the use of biosensors for environmental monitoring Reviews monitoring methods beyond conventional analytic techniques
