Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the National Arbitration and Peace Congress: New York, April 14th to 17th, 1907 The National Arbitration and Peace Congress has been called the greatest gathering ever held in advocacy of the abolition of war as a means of settling international disputes, and the most important non political gathering ever held in this country for any purpose. The suggestion that the first National Peace Congress in America meet in New York in the Spring of 1907, came from Mr. Edwin. D. Mead and Dr. Benjamin F. Trueblood of Boston. Mr. Mead was the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Peace Congress which assembled in Boston in October, 1904. Dr. Trueblood has been the Secretary of the American Peace Society for many years. The success of the Boston Congress, the long and effective work of the Mohonk Arbitration Conferences and of the leading Peace Societies in in uencing public sentiment, encouraged the friends of the Peace movement in New York to assume the task suggested to them. Book excerpt: Looking around him in 1906, Samuel Gompers saw a labor movement beset by opponents who, he said, "represent neither conscience nor humanity, but rather greed and avarice." This installment in the multivolume documentary history of the nation's premier labor leader spotlights a pivotal period in the AFL's development. "The editors have done their job well, succeeding admirably in their aim of presenting a multidimensional portrait of Gompers and his era." -- Bernard Elbaum, Journal of Economic History "A distinguished and invaluable collection." -- Bruce Laurie, Industrial and Labor Relations Review Supported by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the University of Maryland at College Park

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pragmatist philosopher Jane Addams (1860-1935) is celebrated as the founder of Hull House, the settlement house for disadvantaged people in Chicago, where for many years she put into practice her progressive ideas for social reform. Addams was also deeply involved in international peace efforts. Remaining a pacifist throughout World War I, she was a founder of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Her books and essays on peace are frequently cited but long out of print and hard to obtain. Interest in Jane Addams is rapidly growing. As the American government withdraws from international treaties, her call for international law and cooperation has a new relevance. And in our increasingly dangerous world, her call for peace is being heard again. This volume contains the most complete collection ever made of Addams's essays, articles, and speeches on peace and international relations, written between 1899 and 1935. >
