Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Midland Institute of Mining, Civil, and Mechanical Engineers, Vol. 14: 1894-1897 In December, 1866 - twenty-eight years ago next month - occurred the great disaster at the Oaks colliery, and one of my earliest recollections is of a visit there in January, 1868, when the shafts were being reopened. At that time the Old Oaks colliery, with 731; feet shafts feet deep, was considered one of the largest and deepest in Yorkshire, and with the exception of Shireoaks colliery, sunk in 1859, and Altofts and Denaby Main collieries, recently sunk, there was, I believe, no pit in Yorkshire over feet deep. Five hundred tons a day was looked upon as a fair output for one shaft, and 700 tons was something unusual. Furnace-ventilation was almost universal haulage was almost entirely done by horses, except in a few cases, as at the Oaks colliery, where there were single-rope engine-planes to the dip, and except in a few scattered instances, where compressed air was used, no attempt was made to convey power underground.
