This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long period Soil Mechanics has remained at the semi-empirica stage, and only a few decades ago it has shown a tendency to become a fundamental science. However, this evolution is taking place slowly; in spite of the efforts of numerous research scientists, the very complex rheological laws of soils are still not well known. Even if these laws were elucidated, it would take a long time still to deduce simple rules from them for reliable and convenient use in current practical engineer ing. In the pursuit of these distant aims - and of others more imme diate - fundamental research and applied research are very active, both in Rheology and Soil Mechanics. The complexity of the problems to be solved should incite the laboratory researchers and the engineers to a continuous collaboration. Everyone acknowledges the advantage of these connections although aware of the difficulty of realizing this wish. However, contacts are being made little by little between the repre sentatives of the different branches of Rheology and Soil Mechanics, to the great benefit of science. The bureau of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), aware of the importance of these two associat ed fields of mechanics, considered it possible to accelerate the natural and necessary processus of their interpenetration by organizing in Grenoble, from 1st to 8th April 1964 an International Symposium on Rheology and Soil Mechanics.

Book Synopsis Consolidation Analyses of Soils by : Jian-Hua Yin
Download or read book Consolidation Analyses of Soils written by Jian-Hua Yin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When stresses are applied to saturated soil, deformation will occur as water in voids is squeezed out. Consolidation Analyses of Soils focuses on the consolidation of fully saturated soils. The book follows a classic approach by beginning with one-dimensional constitutive relations of soils and one-dimensional consolidation. It then moves on to analytical solutions to several one-dimensional consolidation problems and one-dimensional finite strain consolidation. The authors also present a finite element method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems, analytical solutions to consolidation of soil with vertical drains, and a finite difference method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems. Simplified methods for consolidation analysis of soils exhibiting creep are introduced and applied to different cases. Three-dimensional consolidation equations and solutions of typical three-dimensional consolidation problems are covered, as well as simplified finite element consolidation analysis of soils with vertical drain and finite element method for three-dimensional consolidation problems. The book is unique in that it covers both classic solutions and state-of-the-art work in consolidation analyses of soils. Authors Jian-Hua Yin is Chair Professor of Soil Mechanics in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Guofu Zhu is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Structures and Mechanics at Wuhan University of Technology, China.
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Continuum Mechanics of Soils by : Yehuda Klausner
Download or read book Fundamentals of Continuum Mechanics of Soils written by Yehuda Klausner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Continuum Mechanics of Soils provides a long-needed general scheme for the study of the important yet problematic material of soil. It closes the gap between two disciplines, soil mechanics and con- tinuum mechanics, showing that the familiar concepts of soil mechanics evolve directly from continuum mechanics. It confirms concepts such as pore pressures, cohesion and dependence of the shear stress on consolidation, and rejects the view that continuum mechanics cannot be applied to a material such as soil. The general concepts of continuum mechanics, field equations and constitutive equations are discussed. It is shown how the theory of mixtures evolves from these equations and how, along with energetics and irrevers- ible thermodynamics, it can be applied to soils. The discussion also sheds light on some aspects of mechanics of materials, especially compressible materials. Examples are the introduction of the Hencky measure of strain, the requirement of dual constitutive equations, and the dependence of the spent internal energy on the stored internal energy. Researchers in engineering mechanics and material sciences may find that the results of experiments on soils can be generalized and extended to other materials. The book is a reference text for students familiar with the fundamentals of mechanics, for scholars of soil engineering, and for soil scientists. It is also suitable as an advanced undergraduate course in soil mechanics.

Book Synopsis Constitutive Modeling of Geomaterials by : Teruo Nakai
Download or read book Constitutive Modeling of Geomaterials written by Teruo Nakai and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-07-23 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a veteran geotechnical engineer with a long record of research discoveries, Constitutive Modeling of Geomaterials: Principles and Applications presents a simple and unified approach to modeling various features of geomaterials in general stress systems. The book discusses the fundamentals of the constitutive modeling of soils and illustrates the application of these models to boundary value problems. Helping readers easily understand the fundamentals and modeling of soil behaviors, the author first explains the ideas and formulations for modeling soil features in one-dimensional conditions. He then extends the one-dimensional models to three-dimensional models using the tij concept. The text covers the subloading tij model and other methods that describe density, bonding, time effect, and more. Moving on to the practical application of the constitutive models, the author presents the numerical simulations of typical geotechnical problems (numerical modeling) and the corresponding model tests (physical modeling). Using a framework that leads to a unified set of material parameters, this book shows how to formulate a constitutive model capable of simulating the main features of soil behavior. It not only covers recent methods and models but also uses real test data to prove their reliability.
