Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains peer-reviewed papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Energy Efficiency in Domestic Appliances and Lighting (EEDAL'19), held in Jinan, China from 6-8 November 2019. Energy efficiency helps to mitigate CO2 emissions and at the same time increases the security of energy supply. Energy efficiency is recognized as the cleanest, quickest and cheapest energy source. Not only this, but energy efficiency brings several additional benefits for society and end-users, such as lower energy costs, reduced local pollution, better outdoor and indoor air quality, etc. However, in some sectors, such as the residential sector, barriers to investments in energy efficiency remain. Legislation adopted in several jurisdictions (EU, Japan, USA, China, India, Australia, Brazil, etc.) helps in removing barriers and fosters investments in energy efficiency. These initiatives complement innovative financing schemes for energy efficiency, the provision of energy services by energy service companies and different types of information programs. At the same time, progress in appliance technologies and in solid state lighting offer high levels of efficiency. LED lighting is an example. As with previous conferences in this series, EEDAL’19 provided a unique forum to discuss and debate the latest developments in energy and environmental impact of households, including appliances, lighting, heating and cooling equipment, electronics, smart meters, consumer behavior, and policies and programs. EEDAL addressed non-technical issues such as consumer behavior, energy access in developing countries, and demand response.

Book excerpt: This book will be of great help to students, scientists, and research workers. It provides vast information on the importance, availability, and general use of meteorological data/services connected with the planning of agricultural investment and development projects. The authors have done a commendable job by collecting the latest information on existing meteorological scenarios for project implementation and future planning concerning additional investment in development projects. Many books and journals contain fragmented information on these topics, but the authors of this book have presented all the information under one umbrella. This comprehensive book meets an increasing need for those interested in climate and weather, such as agricultural researchers, advisors, and policymakers. The authors use their international experience to apply climate and plant science principles to the practical management of agricultural systems-from the policy issue of drought assistance to managing pests in the field. The agrometeorology principles have never been more important as we manage agriculture that is productive and sustainable in a variable and changing climate. This book is valuable not only as a university text but also as a useful reference text for professionals involved in the interface between climate and agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to using the power of design flexibility to improve the performance of complex technological projects, for designers, managers, users, and analysts. Project teams can improve results by recognizing that the future is inevitably uncertain and that by creating flexible designs they can adapt to eventualities. This approach enables them to take advantage of new opportunities and avoid harmful losses. Designers of complex, long-lasting projects—such as communication networks, power plants, or hospitals—must learn to abandon fixed specifications and narrow forecasts. They need to avoid the “flaw of averages,” the conceptual pitfall that traps so many designs in underperformance. Failure to allow for changing circumstances risks leaving significant value untapped. This book is a guide for creating and implementing value-enhancing flexibility in design. It will be an essential resource for all participants in the development and operation of technological systems: designers, managers, financial analysts, investors, regulators, and academics. The book provides a high-level overview of why flexibility in design is needed to deliver significantly increased value. It describes in detail methods to identify, select, and implement useful flexibility. The book is unique in that it explicitly recognizes that future outcomes are uncertain. It thus presents forecasting, analysis, and evaluation tools especially suited to this reality. Appendixes provide expanded explanations of concepts and analytic tools.

Book excerpt: St. Louis Currents: The Fifth Edition carries the series into its 30th year. The publication started in 1986 as a way to disseminate critical essays from local leaders on issues facing the entire region. Thirty years later, Currents is still shaping the St. Louis region's thinking. The fifth edition addresses a wide variety of topics. It has strong essays on the region's historical experience and economic outlook, which are common themes in all editions. New topics include historical perspectives on adult entertainment in Metro East, a demographic study of the region's immigrant population, plus a scholarly look at "The High School Question" (Yes, it matters ). It is a thought- provoking volume that is a must-read for regional leaders-public, private, and nonprofit. As the editors note, St. Louis is rather typical of most urban centers across the country and faces the same issues others do. What is unique is St. Louis's particular mix of leaders and the specific decisions that we the people choose to make for ourselves. As the region climbs out of the Great Recession and processes the lessons of Ferguson, the decisions made by the people ultimately will define the region's successes and struggles. The essays in this volume will help prepare citizens and leaders alike for action on some of those matters, and hopefully start some important discussions that will carry the region forward.

This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waterfronts are attractive areas for many—often competing—uses in New York City and are seen as multifunctional locations for economic, environmental, and social activities on the interface between land and water. The NYC waterfront plays a crucial role as a first line of flood defense and in managing flood risk and protecting the city from future climate change and sea-level rise. The city of New York has embarked on a climate adaptation program (PlaNYC) outlining the policies needed to anticipate the impacts of climate change. As part of this policy, the Department of City Planning is currently preparing Vision 2020: New York City Comprehensive Waterfront Plan for the over 500 miles of NYC waterfront (NYC-DCP, 2011). An integral part of the vision is to improve resilience to climate change and sea-level rise. The study presented in this volume seeks to provide guidance for advancing the goals of NYC Vision 2020 by assessing how flood insurance, flood zoning, and building code policies can contribute to waterfront development that is more resilient to climate change. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheat breeders have achieved significant results over the last fifty years in research on mankind's one of the most important crops. Classical genetic and breeding methods, far broader international cooperation than was experienced in earlier periods, and improvements in agronomic techniques have led to previously unimaginable development in the utilisation of wheat for human consumption. The contribution of wheat researchers is particularly noteworthy since these results have been achieved at a time when the world population has grown extremely dynamically. Despite this demographic explosion, of a proportion never previously experienced, thousands of millions of people have been saved from starvation, thus avoiding unpredictable social consequences and situations irreconcilable with human dignity. Despite these developments in many regions of the world food supplies are still uncertain and the increase in the world's wheat production has not kept pace with the population increase during the last decade. Due to the evils of civilisation and the pollution of the environment there is a constant decline in the per capita area of land suitable for agricultural production. Based on population estimates for 2030, the present wheat yield of around 600 million tonnes will have to be increased to almost 1000 million tonnes if food supplies are to be maintained at the present level.
