This implementation framework will enable readers to tackle new problems without any difficulty through a single Java class as part of the CI library. Key features of this second edition include: A tutorial, hands-on based presentation of the material. State-of-the-art coverage of the most recent developments in computational intelligence with more elaborate discussions on intelligence and artificial intelligence (AI). New discussion of Darwinian evolution versus Lamarckian evolution, also including swarm robotics, hybrid systems and artificial immune systems. A section on how to perform empirical studies; topics including statistical analysis of stochastic algorithms, and an open source library of CI algorithms. Tables, illustrations, graphs, examples, assignments, Java code implementing the algorithms, and a complete CI implementation and experimental framework. Computational Intelligence: An Introduction, Second Edition is essential reading for third and fourth year undergraduate and postgraduate students studying CI. The first edition has been prescribed by a number of overseas universities and is thus a valuable teaching tool. In addition, it will also be a useful resource for researchers in Computational Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence, as well as engineers, statisticians, operational researchers, and bioinformaticians with an interest in applying AI or CI to solve problems in their domains. Check out http://www.ci.cs.up.ac.za for examples, assignments and Java code implementing the algorithms.

Book excerpt: Computational Intelligence: Concepts to Implementations provides the most complete and practical coverage of computational intelligence tools and techniques to date. This book integrates various natural and engineering disciplines to establish Computational Intelligence. This is the first comprehensive textbook on the subject, supported with lots of practical examples. It asserts that computational intelligence rests on a foundation of evolutionary computation. This refreshing view has set the book apart from other books on computational intelligence. This book lays emphasis on practical applications and computational tools, which are very useful and important for further development of the computational intelligence field. Focusing on evolutionary computation, neural networks, and fuzzy logic, the authors have constructed an approach to thinking about and working with computational intelligence that has, in their extensive experience, proved highly effective. The book moves clearly and efficiently from concepts and paradigms to algorithms and implementation techniques by focusing, in the early chapters, on the specific con. It explores a number of key themes, including self-organization, complex adaptive systems, and emergent computation. It details the metrics and analytical tools needed to assess the performance of computational intelligence tools. The book concludes with a series of case studies that illustrate a wide range of successful applications. This book will appeal to professional and academic researchers in computational intelligence applications, tool development, and systems. - Moves clearly and efficiently from concepts and paradigms to algorithms and implementation techniques by focusing, in the early chapters, on the specific concepts and paradigms that inform the authors' methodologies - Explores a number of key themes, including self-organization, complex adaptive systems, and emergent computation - Details the metrics and analytical tools needed to assess the performance of computational intelligence tools - Concludes with a series of case studies that illustrate a wide range of successful applications - Presents code examples in C and C++ - Provides, at the end of each chapter, review questions and exercises suitable for graduate students, as well as researchers and practitioners engaged in self-study

Book excerpt: This book presents selected papers from the 23rd Asia Pacific Symposium on Intelligent and Evolutionary Systems (IES 2019), which was held in Tottori, Japan, on December 6–8, 2019. Today, various types of intelligent system can be found everywhere. However, none of them can be developed or understood from only one perspective. As such, this book collects unique ways of thinking about intelligent systems. It discusses evolutionary and complex adaptive systems, which have been useful approaches for tackling intelligent systems. It also examines the recent developments in the field of artificial intelligence that are driving research on intelligent systems. Addressing topics related to intelligent transport systems, machine learning and neural networks, data science and decision analytics, evolutionary and nature-inspired computation, and agents and complex systems, this book is a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners wanting to develop or understand intelligent and evolutionary systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As has been pointed out by several industrial game AI developers the lack of behavioral modularity across games and in-game tasks is detrimental for the development of high quality AI [605, 171]. An increasingly popular method for ad-hoc behavior authoring that eliminates the modularity limitations of FSMs and BTs is the utility-based AI approach which can be used for the design of control and decision making systems in games [425, 557]. Following this approach, instances in the game get assigned a particular utility function that gives a value for the importance of the particular instance [10, 169]. For instance, the importance of an enemy being present at a particular distance or the importance of an agent’s health being low in this particular context. Given the set of all utilities available to an agent and all the options it has, utility-based AI decides which is the most important option it should consider at this moment [426]. The utility-based approach is grounded in the utility theory of economics and is based on utility function design. The approach is similar to the design of membership functions in a fuzzy set. A utility can measure anything from observable objective data (e.g., enemy health) to subjective notions such as emotions, mood and threat. The various utilities about possible actions or decisions can be aggregated into linear or non-linear formulas and guide the agent to take decisions based on the aggregated utility. The utility values can be checked every n frames of the game. So while FSMs and BTs would examine one decision at a time, utility-based AI architectures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses applications of computational intelligence in sensor networks. Consisting of twenty chapters, it addresses topics ranging from small-scale data processing to big data processing realized through sensor nodes with the help of computational approaches. Advances in sensor technology and computer networks have enabled sensor networks to evolve from small systems of large sensors to large nets of miniature sensors, from wired communications to wireless communications, and from static to dynamic network topology. In spite of these technological advances, sensor networks still face the challenges of communicating and processing large amounts of imprecise and partial data in resource-constrained environments. Further, optimal deployment of sensors in an environment is also seen as an intractable problem. On the other hand, computational intelligence techniques like neural networks, evolutionary computation, swarm intelligence, and fuzzy systems are gaining popularity in solving intractable problems in various disciplines including sensor networks. The contributions combine the best attributes of these two distinct fields, offering readers a comprehensive overview of the emerging research areas and presenting first-hand experience of a variety of computational intelligence approaches in sensor networks.

This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes hybrid intelligent systems using type-2 fuzzy logic and modular neural networks for pattern recognition applications. Hybrid intelligent systems combine several intelligent computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, and bio-inspired optimization algorithms, which can be used to produce powerful pattern recognition systems. Type-2 fuzzy logic is an extension of traditional type-1 fuzzy logic that enables managing higher levels of uncertainty in complex real world problems, which are of particular importance in the area of pattern recognition. The book is organized in three main parts, each containing a group of chapters built around a similar subject. The first part consists of chapters with the main theme of theory and design algorithms, which are basically chapters that propose new models and concepts, which are the basis for achieving intelligent pattern recognition. The second part contains chapters with the main theme of using type-2 fuzzy models and modular neural networks with the aim of designing intelligent systems for complex pattern recognition problems, including iris, ear, face and voice recognition. The third part contains chapters with the theme of evolutionary optimization of type-2 fuzzy systems and modular neural networks in the area of intelligent pattern recognition, which includes the application of genetic algorithms for obtaining optimal type-2 fuzzy integration systems and ideal neural network architectures for solving problems in this area.
