This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For real-time systems, the worst-case execution time (WCET) is the key objective to be considered. Traditionally, code for real-time systems is generated without taking this objective into account and the WCET is computed only after code generation. Worst-Case Execution Time Aware Compilation Techniques for Real-Time Systems presents the first comprehensive approach integrating WCET considerations into the code generation process. Based on the proposed reconciliation between a compiler and a timing analyzer, a wide range of novel optimization techniques is provided. Among others, the techniques cover source code and assembly level optimizations, exploit machine learning techniques and address the design of modern systems that have to meet multiple objectives. Using these optimizations, the WCET of real-time applications can be reduced by about 30% to 45% on the average. This opens opportunities for decreasing clock speeds, costs and energy consumption of embedded processors. The proposed techniques can be used for all types real-time systems, including automotive and avionics IT systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides an overview of the dissertations of the eleven nominees for the Ernst Denert Award for Software Engineering in 2020. The prize, kindly sponsored by the Gerlind & Ernst Denert Stiftung, is awarded for excellent work within the discipline of Software Engineering, which includes methods, tools and procedures for better and efficient development of high quality software. An essential requirement for the nominated work is its applicability and usability in industrial practice. The book contains eleven papers that describe the works by Jonathan Brachthäuser (EPFL Lausanne) entitled What You See Is What You Get: Practical Effect Handlers in Capability-Passing Style, Mojdeh Golagha's (Fortiss, Munich) thesis How to Effectively Reduce Failure Analysis Time?, Nikolay Harutyunyan's (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg) work on Open Source Software Governance, Dominic Henze's (TU Munich) research about Dynamically Scalable Fog Architectures, Anne Hess's (Fraunhofer IESE, Kaiserslautern) work on Crossing Disciplinary Borders to Improve Requirements Communication, Istvan Koren's (RWTH Aachen U) thesis DevOpsUse: A Community-Oriented Methodology for Societal Software Engineering, Yannic Noller's (NU Singapore) work on Hybrid Differential Software Testing, Dominic Steinhofel's (TU Darmstadt) thesis entitled Ever Change a Running System: Structured Software Reengineering Using Automatically Proven-Correct Transformation Rules, Peter Wägemann's (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg) work Static Worst-Case Analyses and Their Validation Techniques for Safety-Critical Systems, Michael von Wenckstern's (RWTH Aachen U) research on Improving the Model-Based Systems Engineering Process, and Franz Zieris's (FU Berlin) thesis on Understanding How Pair Programming Actually Works in Industry: Mechanisms, Patterns, and Dynamics--which actually won the award. The chapters describe key findings of the respective works, show their relevance and applicability to practice and industrial software engineering projects, and provide additional information and findings that have only been discovered afterwards, e.g. when applying the results in industry. This way, the book is not only interesting to other researchers, but also to industrial software professionals who would like to learn about the application of state-of-the-art methods in their daily work.

Book excerpt: Updated to follow the recommendations put forth by the ACM/SIGCSE 2001 task force, Analysis of Algorithms raises awareness of the effects that algorithms have on the efficiency of a program and develops the necessary skills to analyze general algorithms used in programs. The text presents the material with the expectation that it can be used with active and cooperative learning methodology, based on the premise that students learn more effectively and retain more information longer when they are active participants in the learning process. To accomplish this, the chapters are clear and complete to encourage students to prepare by reading before class, and the text is filled with exciting examples and exercises that look at the efficiency of various algorithms to solve a problem. The author is well known for workshops that he presents on the active learning model. He has written an instructor's manual that helps instructors understand how to present the material in an active way.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the conference proceedings of the 4th International S- posium on Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods, Veri?cation and Vali- tion, ISoLA 2010, which was held in Greece (Heraklion, Crete) October 18–21, 2010, and sponsored by EASST. Following the tradition of its forerunners in 2004, 2006, and 2008 in Cyprus and Chalchidiki, and the ISoLA Workshops in Greenbelt (USA) in 2005, in Poitiers (France) in 2007, and in Potsdam (Germany) in 2009, ISoLA 2010 p- vided a forum for developers, users, and researchers to discuss issues related to the adoption and use of rigorous tools and methods for the speci?cation, ana- sis, veri?cation, certi?cation, construction, testing, and maintenance of systems from the point of view of their di?erent application domains. Thus, the ISoLA series of events serves the purpose of bridging the gap between designers and developers of rigorous tools, and users in engineering and in other disciplines, and to foster and exploit synergetic relationships among scientists, engineers, software developers, decision makers, and other critical thinkers in companies and organizations. In particular, by providing a venue for the discussion of c- mon problems, requirements, algorithms, methodologies, and practices, ISoLA aims at supporting researchers in their quest to improve the utility, reliability, ?exibility, and e?ciency of tools for building systems, and users in their search for adequate solutions to their problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deterministic network calculus is a theory based on the (min, plus) algebra. Its aim is to compute worst-case performance bounds in communication networks. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive view of this theory and its recent advances, from its theoretical foundations to its implementations. The book is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the (min, plus) framework and its algorithmic aspects. The second part defines the network calculus model and analyzes one server in isolation. Different service and scheduling policies are discussed, particularly when data is packetized. The third part is about network analyses. Pay burst only once and pay multiplexing only once phenomena are exhibited, and different analyses are proposed and compared. This includes the linear programming approaches that compute tight performance bounds. Finally, some partial results on the stability are detailed.
