Book excerpt: Multiple Criteria Decision Aid is a field which has seen important developments in the last few years. This is not only illustrated by the increasing number of papers and communications in the scientific journals and Congresses, but also by the activities of several international working groups. In 1983, a first Summer School was organised at Catania (Sicily) to promote multicriteria decision-aid in companies and to encourage specialists to exchange didactic material. The second School was held in 1985 at Narnur (Belgium) and I am pleased now to present the selected readings from the "Third International Summer School on Multicriteria Decision Aid: Methods, Applications and Software", which took place in Monte Estoril (Portugal), in 1988. was the quality of the contributions presented by the Such during the Summer School that I have decided to take lecturers advantage of this opportunity to produce a more carefully prepared and homogeneous book rather than a simple volume of proceedings. All the initial versions of the selected papers were revised and some, although not included in the programme of the School, were written in order to give a more complete overview of the MCDA field.

PROGRESS IN UTILITY AND RISK THEORY At the First International Congress of Utility and Risk Theory in Oslo 1982 (FUR-82) it appeared to be a widespread feeling among the participants that the conference signalled something like a paradigm shift in the field. This does not necessarily mean that old truths were discarded and replaced by new ones, but rather that new theories and new empirical evidence were brought forth, compelling old theories to be critically analyzed from new angels. Book excerpt: The INRA Feeding System for Ruminants has been renewed to better address emerging challenges for animal nutrition: prevision of productive responses, product quality, animal health and emissions to the environment, in a larger extent of breeding contexts. The new system is mainly built from meta-analyses of large data bases, and modelling. The dietary supply model accounts for digestive interactions and flows of individual nutrients, so that feed values depend on the final ration. Animal requirements account for variability in metabolic efficiency. Various productive and non-productive animal responses to diets are quantified. This book presents the whole system for dairy and meat, large and small ruminant production, including specificities for tropical and Mediterranean areas. The first two sections present biological concepts and equations (with their field of application and statistical accuracy) used to predict intake (including at grazing) and nutrient supply (Section 1), animal’s requirements and multiple responses to diets (Section 2). They apply to net energy, metabolisable protein and amino acids, water, minerals and vitamins. Section 3 presents the use of concepts and equations in rationing with two purposes: (1) diet calculation for a given performance objective; and (2) prediction of the multiple responses of animal to diet changes. Section 4 displays the tables of feed values, and their prevision. All the equations and concepts are embedded in the fifth version of INRAtion® software for practical use.
