Book excerpt: In September 1984, the Research Council was requested by the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation to conduct an investigation into the problems experienced with wooden noise barriers. Some of these barriers warped even before construction was completed, and gaps and splits were noted within a short period of time. A questionnaire survey of eleven states that have constructed noise barriers revealed that these problems are widespread. An analysis of the responses to the questionnaire has led to three basic recommendations. The first of these recommends upgrading the overall quality of the material used in the construction of the wooden barriers. This includes raising the grade of wood required and lowering the moisture content, as well as specifying maximum moisture contents for the wood both before and after treatment. Next, it is recommended that simple changes be made in the design of barriers. Technical alterations such as additional braces, fitted joints, overlapping joints, and angled nailing would help preserve their shape. Also, the use of plywood rather than planks would minimize the number of joints. The third recommendation is that specifications be strictly enforced. Wood, with its tendency to warp and shrink, must be handled correctly if it is to provide a noise barrier that will be effective over a long period of time.

Book excerpt: As new and existing U.S. residential areas and high volume highways continue to intermingle, traffic noise abatement procedures continue to be important. This study investigated the acoustic effectiveness, public acceptance, and structural requirements of various designs and types of sound barriers. In addition, the acoustic effectiveness of a prototype sound barrier is reported. Results are presented on the acoustic effectiveness from in situ measurements of one cement bonded composite panel barrier and four precast concrete, two plywood, two glued-laminated, and three post and panel barriers. The research on public acceptance of sound barriers focused on the perception of visual compatibility. Based on results from semantic-differential and individual ratings, wood and concrete barrier designs were perceived to have favored gbsruralgcs qualities. Data collected during the research on acoustic effectiveness and public acceptance were used to develop structural requirements and construction details for a prototype wood sound barrier. The prototype wood sound barrier provided insertion losses of 15 dB or greater, exceeding the 10-dB acceptable performance for a highway sound barrier.

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway environmental engineers, noise analysts, design engineers, maintenance personnel, planners, administrators, and others responsible for the design, selection, and maintenance of noise barriers or other traffic noise abatement policies. Information is provided on current state practice associated with noise abatement techniques and on the various products that are used. This synthesis describes the state of the art with respect to traffic noise abatement procedures, especially noise barriers. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on the design, construction and maintenance of both new (Type I) and retrofit ( Type II) noise barriers. The design elements that are addressed include materials, the selection process, service life, foundations, drainage, aesthetics, and safety. The construction section covers technical problems related to surface effects, durability, snow damage, and costs. Other noise abatement measures such as insulation and highway design alternatives are also addressed. The issue of public demand and availability funding is included, and recommendations are made to improve the situation.

This report presents the HITEC evaluation plan for U.S. Gypsum's Sight and Sound Screen. The Sight and Sound Screen is a post-and-panel wall system designed to act as a sight and sound barrier for highways and as a privacy system for residential and commercial property owners. The HITEC evaluation will measure the performance of the barrier against the criteria presented in this report, which reflect the needs of the highway community. Although this evaluation plan was tailored to one product, as a service to state and local transportation officials the report was expanded to provide guidelines that can be adapted for use with other types of sound wall systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this project included: development of a means to quantify the service lives of materials used for construction of noise barriers in Illinois; development of a life cycle cost model for the evaluation of alternative materials; and evaluation of the need for potential changes to the Special Provisions for noise barrier construction currently used in Illinois. The project included a survey of all state departments of transportation (DOTs) to develop information on experiences with noise barrier materials and products, which showed that nationwide, less than 1% of noise barriers by length have been repaired or replaced, and that few DOTs use life cycle cost analysis for selection of noise barriers. A comprehensive list of the materials currently approved for use in Illinois by the Illinois Highway Development Council was developed. The current condition of existing Illinois noise barriers was assessed by field observation, and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) maintenance personnel were surveyed to develop information on maintenance histories, costs of repairs, scheduled repair or replacement of barriers, and estimated service lives of barriers in place. Service life criteria were developed considering the structural, acoustical, and aesthetic functions of noise barriers. A life cycle cost model was developed and the relative life cycle costs of existing Illinois noise barriers were computed. Noise barrier specifications supplied by IDOT and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority were reviewed, and recommendations for improving the organization and content of the specifications were made.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the acoustic performance of concrete made with Coal Bottom Ash (CBA) that has contributed to environmental issues. The usage of CBA in concrete can be recommended as good concrete due to its absorption properties. This book focuses on the principles and techniques employed in acoustic design. The book first elaborates on the perception of noise and properties of noise, followed by physical data, units and measurements. Finally, it takes a look at acoustic analysis which includes acoustic performance effects using different volumes of CBA, density and porosity of concrete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical model, based on boundary element techniques, was used to study in detail the performance of various configurations of road traffic noise barriers. Experimental scale-modelling (1:20) was used to confirm the predictions and the most promising designs were then constructed and tested in full-scale trials. Generally, the results were very promising and the agreement between the theoretical and experimental values was excellent. Whereas traditional noise barrier design is based on diffraction around a single, vertical screen, it is shown that the use of two or more screens can be considerably more efficient in terms of noise reduction. Depending on site conditions, this increased efficiency can be achieved with the same amount of, or less, construction material. The principle of having multiple diffracting edges is extended to barriers with a single foundation. Adding side-panels onto a single vertical screen, creating a fork-like profile is an effective and inexpensive method of increasing the efficiency of a noise barrier. These m̀ultiple-edge' profiles could easily be constructed using existing barriers. A T̀-profile' barrier can be constructed by adding a horizontal cap to a vertical screen. These barriers can be very efficient, providing that the upper face of the horizontal cap is designed to absorb some of the diffracted sound field. The use of absorbing, rather than reflective, vertical noise barriers is found to produce only a small increase in efficiency. However, when problems resulting from back-reflection of noise from the barrier surface are considered, their use becomes much more important.

Book excerpt: Over the past 10-15 years a renaissance in wood architecture has occurred with the development of new wood building systems and design strategies, elevating wood from a predominantly single-family residential idiom to a rival of concrete and steel construction for a variety of building types, including high rises. This new solid wood architecture offers unparalleled environmental as well as construction and aesthetic benefits, and is of growing importance for professionals and academics involved in green design. Solid Wood provides the first detailed book which allows readers to understand new mass timber/massive wood architecture. It provides: historical context in wood architecture from around the world a strong environmental rationale for the use of wood in buildings recent developments in contemporary fire safety and structural issues insights into building code challenges detailed case studies of new large-scale wood building systems on a country-by-country basis. Case studies from the UK, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Italy, Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Australia highlight design strategies, construction details and unique cultural attitudes in wood design. The case studies include the most ambitious academic, hospitality, industrial, multi-family, and wood office buildings in the world. With discussions from leading architectural, engineering, and material manufacturing firms in Europe, North America and the South Pacific, Solid Wood disrupts preconceived notions and serves as an indispensable guide to twenty-first century wood architecture and its environmental and cultural benefits.
