Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Strength of Materials For the average student to Obtain a working knowledge Of any scientific subject it is necessary that he solve numerous problems. This is especially true in the study Of mechanics. In teaching Strength of Materials the author has found that the text-books do not give a sufficient number of examples to completely familiarize the student with the application of the theory. The aim Of this book is to furnish a large variety of problems on each part of the subject, and thus relieve the instructor of tedious dictation in the class room. A discussion of riveted joints is given for use in the computation and design Of such joints as, are often found in boiler construction. NO definite notation is adopted in order that the book may be used in connection with a course of lectures or with any text-book on the subject. Tables at the back Of the book give all the data necessary for solving the problems, but answers have been omitted in order to emphasize that the goal is a proper solution and not a mere numerical answer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strength of Materials It may be said, in a general way, that when designing machinery the designer must take into consideration two main factors. One is to so design the mechanism mechanically that the various motions required can be obtained by means of the machine. The other is to so proportion the parts that they will be strong enough to do the work for which they are intended Without breakage and, in most cases, without distortion. A third factor also enters prominently into the design, that Iof_so designing a machine that the various parts can be easily manufactured, but this last factor, while commercially fully as important as the other two, has not a direct bearing upon the actual working of the completed mechanism. The subject that will be dealt with in this Reference Book relates to the second of the two main questions affecting the design, that of proportioning the parts so that they will be strong enough to properly do the work for which they are intended. This problem, in turn, may be divided into two sections, one of which deals with the determining of the forces which act upon a machine part, tending to. Break or distort it, and the determination of the actual proportions necessary to resist these forces. The science of determining the forces acting upon a machine part or, in general, upon an engineering structure, is termed mechanics, this word being used in its more limited sense, often referred to as theoretical mechanics. The problem of actually determining the dimensions of details of machines or structures with regard to their strength is covered by that part of mechanical knowl edge which is known as the strength of materials. It should be under stood, however, that the question of determining the forces acting upon an engineering structure or machine and the determination of the actual dimensions and materials required to resist these forces, are so closely connected that in dealing with the strength of materials we must also deal, to a very large extent, with the mechanical theory of forces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics of Materials Since 188 5, when the first edition of this work was published, many advances have been made in the subject of Mechanics of Materials. Some of these have been noted in the additions to subsequent editions, but to record and correlate them properly it has now become necessary to rewrite and reset the book. In doing so the author has endeavored to keep the facts of experi ment and practice constantly in View, for the theory Of the subject is merely the formal expression and generalization of observed phenomena. The subject, indeed, no longer consists of a series, of academic exercises in algebra and rational mechanics, but it is indispensably necessary that the phenomena of stress should be clearly understood by the student. While laboratory work is a valuable aid to this end, it is important, in the Opinion of the author, that no recitation or lecture should be held without having test specimens at hand with which to illustrate the phys ical phenomena. The same general plan of treatment has been followed as before, but the subdivisions are somewhat different, and the fifteen chapters of the last edition have been increased to nineteen. The statement of average values of the principal materials. Of engineering has proved so advantageous to students that it is here also followed. Numerous numerical examples are given in the text to exemplify the formulas and methods, these generally relating to cases that arise in practice. To encourage students to think for themselves, one or more problems are given at the end of each article; 1 for the experience of the author has indicated that the solution of many numerical exercises is required in order that students may become well grounded in theory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength of Materials It is chiefly for the benefit of those users of materials of construction who are disposed to be their own engineers that this series of articles is written, but it is hoped that they will not on that account be without interest to members of the engineering profession. It is intended to present some facts and figures which will show that because a metal is called by the name iron it does not therefore necessarily possess a definite strength, but that its strength should first be determined by test; that published records of tests are not always to be relied upon; that many tests them selves are not reliable; and that in using any material in construction not only its strength but its other properties should be considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strength of Materials: A Manual for Students of Engineering The greater part' of the matter contained in the following pages is based on the notes of lectures given to the day and evening students at the Manchester Municipal School of Technology during the last five sessions. The book is intended for the use of those students of engineer ing who are desirous of obtaining a working knowledge of the fundamental principles involved in problems of machine and structural design. It should be found useful to candidates for the Third and Honours stages of the Examinations of the Board of Education, the examination for the admission of Associate Members to the Institution of Civil Engineers, as well as the examinations in the Engineering Schools of the Universities. It will be seen that special attention has been paid to the unequal distribution of stress, and to the limits of elasticity in iron and steel. Many of the examples quoted are taken from experimental results obtained by the writer or his students. It is also to be noted that the majority of the proofs given are similar to those used in most of the text-books. The author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to the many writers of books and scientific papers to which he has referred in collecting these notes. W. O. P. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Action of Materials Under Stress or Structural Mechanics: Comprising the Strength and Resistance of Materials and Elements of Structural Design; With Examples and Problems I. External Forces. - The engineer, in designing a new structure, or critically examining one already built, determines from the conditions of the case the actual or probable external forces which the structure is called upon to resist. He may then prepare, either by mathematical calculations or by graphical methods, a sheet which shows the maximum and minimum direct forces of tension and compression which the several pieces or parts of the structure are liable to experience, as well as the bending moments on such parts as are subjected to them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strength of Materials: A Comprehensive Presentation of Scientific Methods of Locating and Determining Stresses and Calculating the Required Strength and Dimensions of Building Materials Every layman is fascinated by a great engineering work - a large sewage system, a Keokuk dam, a twenty-story steel structure - and wishes he might be able to construct such work and carry it to completion. And yet he hardly appreciates the knowledge, experience, and judgment necessary to bring such a work to a satisfactory close. Time was when all of the details of such structures were determined by guesswork, but the developments in science and mathematics have changed all that. Formulas for the various types of stresses have been worked out; constants for every known material have been collected; and a multitude of diagrams and tables contribute to making the engineer's work as precise as a bookkeeper's balance. The strength and size of every rivet and the length and cross section of every girder in a steel structure are figured so they will bear the strains put upon them. The design of a masonry dam, the strength of the concrete mixture, and the amount of steel reinforcement are all mathematically determined in order to safely restrain the given volume of water behind it. The final judgment, therefore, as to the size of every part of the structure -must depend upon the designer's knowledge of "Strength of Materials." The treatment of Strength of Materials, as found in standard textbooks, is so clothed in abstruse mathematics that it is impossible for the average trained man to obtain a working knowledge of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strength of Materials: A d104 Book for Technical, and Industrial Schools This text is the result Of over twelve years' experience In teaching the subject Of strength Of materials to the stu dents at Pratt Institute. An attempt has been made to present the fundamental and underlying principles with a minimum of mathematics. These principles are applied by the introduction Of a large number Of examples which are worked out in detail. It is only by the working of orig inal problems that the student is able to test his knowledge Of the subject. Many of the applications are made more particularly to mechanical lines of work, and yet the student who proposes 'to follow structural work will find the text Of great help to him. The text covers the application Of strength Of materials in the proportioning Of beams, columns, shafting, riveted joints, and in problems dealing with simple stresses. Chapter I has been made of an introductory nature, the desire being to present very briefly, but concisely, the simple laws Of equilibrium, so that the student may be able quickly and accurately to analyze the forces acting in any machine or machine part. A chapter is inserted dealing with the testing, and the production Of the more common materials of construction. It has been the experience of the author that only by the assigning Of original problems in class is the instructor able to test the grasp Of the subject the student is securing.
