The land use interpretations of 1968 and 1973 were compared for four woodland test sites, each of approximately 11 km2. In two of the four cases, substantial changes in the amount and location of Non-productive woodland delineations were indicated by the maps. Field checking and photo comparison for these two sites revealed that no detectable change in forest cover had occurred"--Abstract.

The impact of this resettlement can be both favourable and unfavourable. A resettlement of the eastern Ontario/western Quebec study area from 1972 to 1979 was mainly generated by exurbanites from Montreal and Ottawa. This resettlement has generally strengthened rural socio-economic infrastructures and maintained farmland in agricultural use. However, the demand for primarily subdivided properties is decreasing the availability and increasing the value of quality farmland. While farmers may turn to land rental, short-term agreements contribute to exploitation of the soil resource. The anticipation of higher land values could also contribute further to economic uncertainty and eventually to a lowering of agricultural productivity"--Abstract.

In this report an approach to estimating future rural to urban land conversions is described and a method to assess the implications of land conversions in terms of the land resource for rural land use activities is developed. Physiographic, socio-economic and political forces have each played an important rolein agricultural land use changes. Since 1976, however, thesituation has been showing signs of slow recovery. A case studyidentifies specifically the areas experiencing changes inagricultural land use and the areas where reforestation is takingplace. Results of the study showed that the majority ofabandoned farmland was unused in 1981. Finally, developmentalternatives are outlined.
