Les tentatives dans ce sens jusqu'ici n'ont donné que des résultats mitigés et parfois décevants. De même, sur le plan de la coopération internationale et institutionnelle, les espoirs ont été déçus du fait du néocolonialisme et du manque de sérieux de certains acteurs et de certaines institutions. Du coup, le développement, présent sur toutes les lèvres, semblait être devenu une simple hypothèse d'école. Les années 72, mais surtout 92, semblent avoir permis cette réorientation. Longtemps restés frileux, les Etats de l'Afrique Centrale à la suite des pays industrialisés s'engagent à venir au chevet d'une nature longtemps méprisée, voire sacrifiée sur l'autel du développement, Désormais, il faut tenter de recoller les morceaux en alliant environnement au développement afin que celui-ci soit " durable ". Mais pour que cela se réalise, il faut juguler de nombreux obstacles anciens et nouveaux, éviter la dispersion des énergies et impliquer tous les acteurs. II faut puiser dans le " génie africain " pour concevoir et réussir un développement durable " à la sauce africaine ".
