Book excerpt: In the hierarchical view of star formation, the densest regions of the interstellar medium (ISM) undergo gravitational collapse to form stars. Typically, many stars are formed in tandem to produce a star cluster. In turn, these star clusters are grouped together to form larger associations of clusters and these form together to shape the large-scale galactic structures like spiral arms. Charting the connection between the star formation at small-scales and the large-scale galactic properties is crucial for understanding the evolution of galaxies. We begin this dissertation in Chapter 1 with an introduction to the current understanding of star formation, the cold gas of the ISM, and how the two are related. We also outline the big-picture questions we seek to answer in this dissertation and the tools needed in these studies. In Chapter 2, we discuss the first step in a joint analysis of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) dust continuum maps. This study aims to correlate the emission from young star clusters with the properties of the observed dust. Chapter 3 sets up the spectral energy distribution modeling effort for the Physics at High Angular Resolutions in Nearby GalaxieS-HST (PHANGS-HST) star cluster data pipeline. This chapter goes into great detail on testing, validating, and characterizing how well we can model the star clusters. This modeling provides estimates of the physical properties of the star clusters which are critical for the analysis presented in Chapter 4. In this study, we utilize the PHANGS-HST star cluster catalogs in 11 nearby galaxies combined with the PHANGS--ALMA giant molecular cloud (GMC) catalogs in order to spatially correlate the star clusters with their natal gas clouds. With this correlation, we constrain the timescale for dissipation of the GMCs after the onset of star formation.

To better understand this critical step in galaxy evolution, we perform detailed studies of three nearby merging systems. Using images from the Hubble Space Telescope, we identify hundreds of star clusters in these systems, most of which formed as a result of a merger. By studying these clusters, we are able to constrain the properties of their host galaxies. These properties include: the timescale of the interaction, morphology of the merger's progenitor galaxies, and the conditions in which stars and clusters formed. We find clusters in all tidal tails of our galaxy sample, even tails that were previously reported to be clusterless. Ages of clusters are similar to ages of their host tidal tails as predicted from simulations. We also find a color gradient across some tails, indicative of a gradient in ages that suggest star formation takes place primarily in the center of the tails, where gas is likely densest. In addition, cluster ages allow us to probe the star formation histories in these systems by predicting past SFRs in various regions of the galaxies using a new method involving the cluster mass function. The mergers also present an interesting environment to study star clusters themselves. We find that the formation and evolution of star clusters in mergers fits the "quasi-universal'' picture of clusters seen in many other galaxies.

Book excerpt: (Abridged) Physical processes regulating star formation in satellite galaxies represent an area of ongoing research, but the projected nature of observed coordinates makes separating different populations of satellites (with different processes at work) difficult. The present-day phase space coordinates of a satellite galaxy carry information about its orbital history, which can then be compared to its star formation history (SFH). This is expected to reveal both a trigger time and timescale for environmental quenching. Finally, this can be related back to the physical process(es) regulating star formation in high density environments. We use merger trees from the MultiDark Run 1 N-body simulation to compile a catalogue of satellite orbits in cluster environments. We parameterize the orbital history by the time since crossing within 2.5 virial radii of the cluster centre and use our catalogue to estimate the probability density over a range of this parameter given a set of projected phase space coordinates. We show that different populations of satellite haloes occupy (semi- )distinct regions of (projected) phase space. We generalize this result by producing a probability distribution function (PDF) of possible infall times at every point in projected phase space. We apply our method to determining the infall time PDFs of a large sample of observed cluster satellite candidates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We use galaxy colour as a proxy for SFH and model the distribution of satellite galaxy colours as two gaussian populations. We derive a Markov chain Monte-Carlo method to obtain the colour distribution as a function of the time since infall into the cluster environment. Our implementation of this method is still being tuned, but we use a second simpler (but much cruder) method to obtain an estimate of the evolution of the colour distribution. Our results are suggestive of a quenching process that begins within perhaps ±1 Gyr of virial radius crossing and which slows after pericentric passage. We stress that results obtained with this second method come with important caveats.

It is not yet clear, however, whether stars cluster on preferred size scales within galaxies, or if stellar groupings have a continuous size distribution. I have developed two methods to select stellar groupings across a wide range of size-scales in order to assess trends in the size distribution and other basic properties of stellar groupings. The first method uses visual inspection of color-magnitude and color-color diagrams of clustered stars to assess whether the compact sources within the potential association are coeval, and thus likely to be born from the same parentmolecular cloud. This method was developed using the stellar associations in the M51/NGC 5195 interacting galaxy system. This process is highly effective at selecting single-aged stellar associations, but in order to assess properties of stellar clustering in a larger sample of nearby galaxies, an automated method for selecting stellar groupings is needed.

Book excerpt: This thesis straddles two areas of cosmology, each of which are active, rich and plagued by controversy in their own right: merging clusters and the environmental dependence of galaxy evolution. While the greater context of this thesis is major cluster mergers, our individual subjects are galaxies, and we apply techniques traditionally used to study the differential evolution of galaxies with environment. Our first system (Chapter 2) is a cluster merger known as Musket Ball that is in a post-merging state. Our second system (Chapter 3), referred to as Cl J0910, is comprised of two clusters that have not yet merged. The order in which they are presented is intentional because, while it would have made more sense to study the pre-merger system first, our approach in Chapter 3 was shaped by what we learned by handling the significantly more difficult post-merger system. The body of this thesis is drawn from two papers: Mansheim et al. 2016a and Mansheim et al. 2016b, one on each system. Both projects benefited from exquisite data sets assembled as part of the Merging Cluster Collaboration (MC2), and Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey, allowing us to scrutinize the evolutionary states of galaxy populations in multiple lights. Multi-band optical and near-infrared imaging was available for both systems, allowing us to calculate photometric redshifts for completeness corrections, colors (red vs. blue) and stellar masses to view the ensemble properties of the populations in and around each merger. High-resolution spectroscopy was also available for both systems, allowing us to confirm cluster members by measuring spectroscopic redshifts, which are unparalleled in accuracy, and gauge star formation rates and histories by measuring the strengths of certain spectral features. We had the luxury of HST imaging for Musket Ball, allowing us to use galaxy morphology (late-type vs. early-type) as an additional diagnostic. For Cl J0910, 24 [mu]m imaging allowed us to defeat a most pernicious source of uncertainty (dusty starburst vs. quiescent). Details on the acquisition and reduction of multi-wavelength data for each system are found within each respective chapter. It is important to note that the research presented in Chapter 3 is based on a letter which had significant space restrictions, so much of the observational details are outsourced to papers written by ORELSE collaboration members. Below is a free-standing summary of each project, drawn from the abstracts of each paper. The Chapter 1 contains an introduction to the topic and motivation to fill a vacuum in knowledge using our hypothesis. Chapter 4, following the meat of the thesis in Chapters 2 and 3, gives closure and looks to the future. In Chapter 2, we investigate star formation in DLSCL J0916.2+2953, a dissociative merger of two clusters at z=0.53 that has progressed 1.1[superscript +1.3][subscript-0.4] Gyr since first pass-through. We attempt to reveal the effects a collision may have had on the evolution of the cluster galaxies by tracing their star formation history. We probe current and recent activity to identify a possible star formation event at the time of the merger using EW(H[delta]), EW[(OII)], and D[subscript n](4000) measured from the composite spectra of 64 cluster and 153 coeval field galaxies. We supplement Keck DEIMOS spectra with DLS and HST imaging to determine the color, stellar mass, and morphology of each galaxy and conduct a comprehensive study of the populations in this complex structure. Spectral results indicate the average cluster and cluster red sequence galaxies experienced no enhanced star formation relative to the surrounding field during the merger, ruling out a predominantly merger-quenched population. We find that the average blue galaxy in the North cluster is currently active and in the South cluster is currently post-starburst having undergone a recent star formation event. While the North activity could be latent or long-term merger effects, a young blue stellar population and irregular geometry suggest the cluster was still forming prior the collision. While the South activity coincides with the time of the merger, the blue early-type population could be a result of secular cluster processes. The evidence suggests that the dearth or surfeit of activity is indiscernible from normal cluster galaxy evolution. In Chapter 3, we examine the effects of an impending cluster merger on galaxies in the large scale structure (LSS) RX Cl J0910 at z =1.105. Using multi-wavelength data, including 102 spectral members drawn from the ORELSE survey and precise photometric redshifts, we calculate extinction-corrected star formation rates and map the specific star formation rate density of the LSS galaxies. These analyses along with an investigation of the color-magnitude properties of LSS galaxies indicate lower levels of star formation activity in the region between the merging clusters relative to the outskirts of the system. We suggest gravitational tidal forces due to the potential of merging halos may be the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed suppression of star formation in galaxies caught between the merging clusters.

In recent years, observations with the Hubble Space Telescope have led to the discovery of young, massive star clusters in nearby galaxies, constituting a new class that may bridge the gap between open and globular clusters. In this thesis, I present observational studies focused on understanding the properties of young, massive cluster (YMC) populations across a range of galactic environments. Using multiwavelength HST data from the Snapshot Hubble U-band Cluster Survey, I select a high-confidence sample of YMCs in the spiral galaxy NGC 2997 and perform photometry. I characterize the physical properties of the YMC population, including determining the luminosity and mass functions, age distribution, and efficiency of cluster formation. This work helps to establish that in relatively quiescent spiral galaxies, YMCs tend to form with efficiencies of ~10%, and can survive for at least a few hundred Myr. I then present a study of star formation associated with giant gas filaments surrounding NGC 1275, the central galaxy in the Perseus galaxy cluster. I identify a population of YMCs embedded in "streaks" of stars using far-ultraviolet and optical data from HST. These objects may form when the galactic-scale gas filaments slow their expansion and become gravitationally unstable in the outer regions of the galaxy. This work shows that cluster formation can proceed relatively normally in unusual environments, and may form isolated clusters in the outskirts of galaxies. Finally, I focus on the structural properties of YMC populations in two studies. In the first, I measure the effective (half-light) radii, core radii, and light profiles of ~200 YMCs in seven adjacent HST fields on the spiral galaxy M83. In the second, I build upon the findings in the first using YMC samples from two spiral galaxies in the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey, NGC 628 and NGC 1313. These studies imply that YMCs emerge from early evolution with similar radii, typically 2-3 pc, and are not strongly affected by their local environment.

Book excerpt: The main goal of this thesis is to investigate the physical conditions of the star-forming environment in stellar clusters, especially for the formation of low-mass cluster members. Embedded, young, and intermediate-mass stellar clusters around Herbig Ae/Be stars are sampled. Mid- and near-infrared observations identifying young stars and millimeter interferometric observations probing dense molecular gas and dust continuum are presented. These observations are used to reveal the large-scale young stellar population around the vicinity where the sampled clusters form, probe the physical conditions of dense molecular clumps which are capable of forming individual low-mass cluster members, and examine the influence of the most massive star in the cluster on its siblings and natal cluster-forming cloud. This study shows that stars within the cluster tend to seem younger than those outside the cluster, suggesting a higher and continuous star-forming rate within the cluster than outside, or massive stars are initiated later than low-mass stars within the same cloud. A thorough investigation of young stars and dense gas toward the MWC 1080 cluster further suggests a domination of the most massive star in the cluster on both the natal cloud dispersal and its low-mass cluster members. As active outflows and winds from the Herbig Ae/Be stars increase the non-thermal motion in the cloud, low-mass cluster members are formed within denser and more turbulent cores, than isolated low-mass star-forming cores. In addition, the strong gas dispersal from the Herbig Ae/Be stars also helps the removal of the circumstellar material around nearby low-mass stars. This makes these low-mass cluster members appear older. In summary, this thesis provides the observational evidence showing how the most massive star in the cluster affects the formation and evolution of low-mass cluster members and the physical conditions of star formation in the cluster.

Book excerpt: In nearby galaxies, an empirical relation has been established between star formation and gas surface densities, the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS). The relation is nearly linear when molecular gas (H2) is considered, while is less tight with atomic hydrogen (HI). These low gas density regions are of a key importance in the field of star formation, since the are also low metallicity environments, resembling the conditions of a younger universe. This thesis summarizes the observational work done with the IRAM 30MT telescope in two kinds of such regions : disk galaxies with extended ultra-violet emission (XUV), and the interstellar medium going into the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) under ram-pressure stripping in the Virgo cluster. The galex telescope has unveiled in far ultra-violet (FUV) star formation in the outer parts of some disk galaxies that was not traced by HA. To determine the presence of H2 and analyse the K-S relation in these regions, CO observations where done in the outskirts of several XUV disk galaxies, finding both detections and upper limits. These K-S relations showed a broken power law at low gas densities, below the HI-H2 threshold. In the Virgo cluster, similar CO observations were done along the HI tidal arm connecting NGC4388 and M86, where no H2 is expected. Two detections were found, showing very low star formation efficiencies (depleting less than 0,1 % of the gas reservoir per 10 [exposant] 8 yr), and showing again a disconuity of the K-S relation at low gas densities, probing that the process of a gas consumption into stars well known at high densities cannot be extrapolated to lower densities, and that H2 can survive a certain time in the hostile ICM.
