Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thermal probe penetrating a glacier requires heat at the hot point for melting as well as along its entire length to balance the radial heat dissipation in the ice and thus prevent freezing in. The heat transfer problem is solved with a LaPlace transform and the results are developed graphically to simplify the numerical calculations. A performance diagram, developed as a design and operating aid, serves for analysis of the anticipated penetration performance of the probe and the required power levels. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficiency and life time of solar cells, energy and power density of the batteries, and costs of the fuel cells alike cannot be improved unless the complex electronic, optoelectronic, and ionic mechanisms underpinning operation of these materials and devices are understood on the nanometer level of individual defects. Only by probing these phenomena locally can we hope to link materials structure and functionality, thus opening pathway for predictive modeling and synthesis. While structures of these materials are now accessible on length scales from macroscopic to atomic, their functionality has remained Terra Incognitae. In this volume, we provide a summary of recent advances in scanning probe microscopy studies of local functionality of energy materials and devices ranging from photovoltaics to batteries, fuel cells, and energy harvesting systems. Recently emergent SPM modes and combined SPM-electron microscopy approaches are also discussed. Contributions by internationally renowned leaders in the field describe the frontiers in this important field.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental data resulting from an investigation of the electroacoustic probe in an argon afterglow plasma for a planar geometry indicates the value of the probe as a diagnostic tool. It is suited to airborne payloads because of its small size and rugged construction. In carrying out the study, some of the parameters that were varied were the pressure (range = 100 to 1000 micro m), input power to the probe (range = 40 dB), and frequency of input signal (350 to 600 MHz). The effect of changing physical dimensions of the probe was also considered. Electroacoustic probe predictions of the electron density gradients close to a surface were found to compare closely with the electron density gradients obtained with a floating double Langmuir probe. Treating the electroacoustic probe as similar to a resonant circuit produced some preliminary results that show up as familiar Q values. Both linear and nonlinear responses of the electroacoustic probe are illustrated. One nonlinear phenomenon--induced oscillations in sections of the resonance curve--is discussed in detail. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books and reviews about scanning probe microscopies (SPM) cover the basics of their performance, novel developments, and state-of-the-art applications. Taking a different approach, Hybridizing Surface Probe Microscopies: Towards a Full Description of the Meso- and Nanoworlds encompasses the technical efforts in combining SPM with spectroscopic and optical complementary techniques that, altogether, provide a complete description of nanoscale and mesoscale systems and processes from corrosion to enzymatic reactions. The book is organized into eight chapters, following a general scheme that revolves around the two main capabilities of SPM: imaging and measuring interactions. Each chapter introduces key theoretical concepts and basic equations of the particular stand-alone technique with which the scanning probe microscopies are combined. Chapters end with the SPM-technique combination and some real-world examples in which the combination has been devised or used. Most chapters include a historical review of the techniques and numerous illustrations to support key ideas and provide the reader with intuitive understanding. To understand the limitations of any technique also means to understand how this technique works. This book has devoted a considerable amount of space in explaining the basics of each technique as they are being introduced. At the same time, it avoids explaining the particularities of each SPM-based technique and opts for a rather generalized approach. In short, the book’s focus is not on what SPM can do, but rather on what SPM cannot do and, most specifically, on presenting the experimental approaches that circumvent these limitations.
