This book was released on 1978 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The undetected propagation of a fatigue crack constitutes a significant cause of aircraft and other structural failures. To raise the structural failure load to a relatively high level, the manufacturer can divide the structure into many small elements, which significantly increases the ability of a structure to tolerate an element failure. This report presents a procedure for calculating the probability that the element has not failed, as a function of the crack propagation time and hence the crack's length. The procedure's form is so simple that computations with a desk calculator can yield reasonably accurate results. To illustrate this, the report uses data that an aircraft manufacturer developed for the structural components/elements that currently limit the service life of an existing transport aircraft.

This paper presents a procedure for calculating the probability that the structure has not failed, as the function of the crack propagation history for an undetected fatigue crack. The form of the procedure is so simple that computations with a desk calculator can yield reasonably accurate results. Moreover, the necessary input data are often readily available. By adopting such a procedure, aircraft manufacturers and operators can better identify those elements that pose the greatest threat to structural integrity.

Download or read book Challenges and Issues with the Further Aging of U.S. Air Force Aircraft written by J. R. Gebman and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2009 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next 20 years, the further aging of already-old aircraft will introduce challenges and issues for aircraft operators. The technical challenges relate to structures, propulsion, and systems. The institutional challenges include limitations on independent verification of fleet status and future condition and on information needed for engineering analyses including risk assessment, and an overall scarcity of resources.

Download or read book Failure of Materials in Mechanical Design written by Jack A. Collins and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1993-10-06 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Failure of Materials in Mechanical Design: Analysis, Prediction, Prevention, 2nd Edition, covers the basic principles of failure of metallic and non-metallic materials in mechanical design applications. Updated to include new developments on fracture mechanics, including both linear-elastic and elastic-plastic mechanics. Contains new material on strain and crack development and behavior. Emphasizes the potential for mechanical failure brought about by the stresses, strains and energy transfers in machine parts that result from the forces, deflections and energy inputs applied.

Book Synopsis Opportunities for Systems Engineering to Contribute to Durability and Damage Tolerance of Hybrid Structures for Airframes by : J. R. Gebman
Download or read book Opportunities for Systems Engineering to Contribute to Durability and Damage Tolerance of Hybrid Structures for Airframes written by J. R. Gebman and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 2008 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structures making up airframes must be durable and damage tolerant, and the means of ensuring that they are have long been well defined for structures made of metal. But a host of new hybrid materials, some of which contain no metal, are now being used, and these can present new damage mechanisms that engineers must address. The Air Force has established a general approach to airframe durability and damage tolerance. The author examines that approach and considers ways it will need to adapt for the new materials. Given the variety of materials, processes, and end uses involved, the engineering effort will necessarily involve multiple specialties. In these circumstances, the tailoring process could benefit from the efforts of systems engineers. The report addresses both technical and programmatic concerns and identifies opportunities for materials and structural engineers to collaborate with systems engineers. Finally, it offers a framework for collaboration.

Book Synopsis Why Airplanes Crash by : Clinton V. Oster Jr.
Download or read book Why Airplanes Crash written by Clinton V. Oster Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-05-28 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the causes of airplane accidents and what private and public policies are needed to improve aviation safety. It begins by examining the safety record of the United States commuter airline industry in the post-deregulation era characterized by increased emphasis by airlines on cost control and growing pressures on the air traffic control and airport system. The authors go beyond the safety of the scheduled airlines to examine the reasons for accidents in the nonscheduled and general aviation segments of the United States industry, where the bulk of fatalities occur and where airline pilots increasingly receive most of their training and experience. They then turn to an examination of aviation safety throughout the world, first with a detailed comparison of Canadian and American aviation safety, and then with a look at air safety in all regions of the world and the safety performances of all the world's major airlines. Three emerging issues are then examined in greater detail: assessing the margin of safety, worldwide aging of all airline fleets, and terrorism.
