Book excerpt: Stopping a plague (even zombies), tomorrow’s likelihood of rain, and buying a lottery ticket are united by chance. Wildlife conservation, a baseball box score, and governmental spending are united by the need to record numbers. Statistics and probability measure the current state of something and the relative likelihood of potential future states. This book will explore how common experiences are counted, evaluated, and used to make intelligent decisions for the future based on uncertain outcomes.

Book excerpt: We''re barraged with statistics every day about health risks, life expectancy, and the chances of success, but to most of us all these numbers and percentages mean very little. If you''re curious about how statistics can significantly impact your life but don''t want to wrestle with the equations in a dry-as-dust textbook, this lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek, whirlwind tour of entertaining statistics has everything you need. Not only will you be amused by J. H. Weaver''s many entertaining examples, but you''ll actually learn something about how statistics work. Even the most math phobic individual won''t be able to resist delving into the many provocative topics covered, including: Dating--What are the chances of finding your perfect mate?Health--What are the odds that you will have surgery performed this year?Success--What is the likelihood that this book will be a best-seller?Weaver admirably succeeds in proving that statistics can be fun, while showing that a knowledge of the probabilities for any given situation can help you avoid risks and increase your chances of a successful and enjoyable life

Book excerpt: "What distinguishes the work is how precisely it links seemingly dry mathematical formulas to real-life examples." "[A] fascinating read for anyone who has ever wondered how to strike the right balance in circumstances that are inherently unknowable." "A mathematically supported, engaging read on how probabilities are frequently used, misunderstood and creatively applied to shape our daily lives." "[W]ill help readers understand the scope and complexity of the world in which we live." -Kirkus Reviews No one gets every decision in life right, but there is a way to get more of them right than you used to. The purpose of this book is to change how you view the world. It is an explanation of the concepts behind probability theory in plain English. It is intended for people who realize that probability theory is an important subject, but who shy away from formulas and mathematical symbols. Dr. Robert A. Hitlin has taught research techniques and statistics, and conducted sample surveys, statistical research projects, and focus groups for over 45 years. He was a professor of Political Science at Georgetown University and American University, and has taught part time at Vanderbilt University, George Washington University and The University of Maryland. He was voted the "Teacher of the Year" by the graduating seniors at Georgetown University. As President of Robert Hitlin Research Associates, Inc. he has directed and conducted hundreds of research projects for organizations in private industry, national associations, and federal, state and local governments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability and Bayesian Modeling is an introduction to probability and Bayesian thinking for undergraduate students with a calculus background. The first part of the book provides a broad view of probability including foundations, conditional probability, discrete and continuous distributions, and joint distributions. Statistical inference is presented completely from a Bayesian perspective. The text introduces inference and prediction for a single proportion and a single mean from Normal sampling. After fundamentals of Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms are introduced, Bayesian inference is described for hierarchical and regression models including logistic regression. The book presents several case studies motivated by some historical Bayesian studies and the authors’ research. This text reflects modern Bayesian statistical practice. Simulation is introduced in all the probability chapters and extensively used in the Bayesian material to simulate from the posterior and predictive distributions. One chapter describes the basic tenets of Metropolis and Gibbs sampling algorithms; however several chapters introduce the fundamentals of Bayesian inference for conjugate priors to deepen understanding. Strategies for constructing prior distributions are described in situations when one has substantial prior information and for cases where one has weak prior knowledge. One chapter introduces hierarchical Bayesian modeling as a practical way of combining data from different groups. There is an extensive discussion of Bayesian regression models including the construction of informative priors, inference about functions of the parameters of interest, prediction, and model selection. The text uses JAGS (Just Another Gibbs Sampler) as a general-purpose computational method for simulating from posterior distributions for a variety of Bayesian models. An R package ProbBayes is available containing all of the book datasets and special functions for illustrating concepts from the book. A complete solutions manual is available for instructors who adopt the book in the Additional Resources section.
