Book excerpt: A methodology to compute probabilistically-combined thermo-mechanical fatigue life of polymer matrix laminated composites has been developed and is demonstrated. Matrix degradation effects caused by long-term environmental exposure and mechanical/thermal cyclic loads are accounted for in the simulation process. A unified time-temperature-stress-dependent multifactor-interaction relationship developed at NASA Glenn Research Center has been used to model the degradation/aging of material properties due to cyclic loads. The fast probability-integration method is used to compute probabilistic distribution of response. Sensitivities of fatigue life reliability to uncertainties in the primitive random variables (e.g., constituent properties, fiber volume ratio, void volume ratio, ply thickness, etc.) computed and their significance in the reliability-based design for maximum life is discussed. The effect of variation in the thermal cyclic loads on the fatigue reliability for a (0/+/-45/90)s graphite/epoxy laminate with a ply thickness of 0.127 mm, with respect to impending failure modes has been studied. The results show that, at low mechanical-cyclic loads and low thermal-cyclic amplitudes, fatigue life for 0.999 reliability is most sensitive to matrix compressive strength, matrix modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, and ply thickness. Whereas at high mechanical-cyclic loads and high thermal-cyclic amplitudes, fatigue life at 0.999 reliability is more sensitive to the shear strength of matrix, longitudinal fiber modulus, matrix modulus, and ply thickness.

Book excerpt: A methodology is developed to computationally assess the non-deterministic composite response at all composite scales (from micro to structural) due to the uncertainties in the constituent (fiber and matrix) properties, in the fabrication process and in structural variables (primitive variables). The methodology is computationally efficient for simulating the probability distributions of composite behavior, such as material properties, laminate and structural responses. Bi-products of the methodology are probabilistic sensitivities of the composite primitive variables. The methodology has been implemented into the computer codes PICAN (Probabilistic Integrated Composite ANalyzer) and IPACS (Integrated Probabilistic Assessment of Composite Structures). The accuracy and efficiency of this methodology are demonstrated by simulating the uncertainties in composite typical laminates and comparing the results with the Monte Carlo simulation method. Available experimental data of composite laminate behavior at all scales fall within the scatters predicted by PICAN. Multi-scaling is extended to simulate probabilistic thermo-mechanical fatigue and to simulate the probabilistic design of a composite redome in order to illustrate its versatility. Results show that probabilistic fatigue can be simulated for different temperature amplitudes and for different cyclic stress magnitudes. Results also show that laminate configurations can be selected to increase the redome reliability by several orders of magnitude without increasing the laminate thickness--a unique feature of structural composites. The old reference denotes that nothing fundamental has been done since that time.

Book excerpt: A methodology to compute cumulative probability distribution functions (CDF) of fatigue life for different ratios, r of applied stress to the laminate strength based on first ply failure criteria has been developed and demonstrated. Degradation effects due to long term environmental exposure and mechanical cyclic loads are considered in the simulation process. A unified time-stress dependent multi-factor interaction equation model developed at NASA Lewis Research Center has been used to account for the degradation/aging of material properties due to cyclic loads. Fast probability integration method is used to perform probabilistic simulation of uncertainties. Sensitivity of fatigue life reliability to uncertainties in the primitive random variables are computed and their significance in the reliability based design for maximum life is discussed. The results show that the graphite/epoxy (0/+45/90) deg laminate with ply thickness 0.125 in. has 500,000 cycles life for applied stress to laminate strength ratio of 0.6 and a reliability of 0.999. Also, the fatigue life reliability has been found to be most sensitive to the ply thickness and matrix tensile strength. Tighter quality controls must therefore be enforced on ply thickness and matrix strength in order to achieve high reliability of the structure. Shah, A. R. and Singhal, S. N. and Murthy, P. L. Book excerpt: The nonlinear behavior of a high-temperature metal-matrix composite (HT-MMC) was simulated by using the metal matrix composite analyzer (METCAN) computer code. The simulation started with the fabrication process, proceeded to thermomechanical cyclic loading, and ended with the application of a monotonic load. Classical laminate theory and composite micromechanics and macromechanics are used in METCAN, along with a multifactor interaction model for the constituents behavior. The simulation of the stress-strain behavior from the macromechanical and the micromechanical points of view, as well as the initiation and final failure of the constituents and the plies in the composite, were examined in detail. It was shown that, when the fibers and the matrix were perfectly bonded, the fracture started in the matrix and then propagated with increasing load to the fibers. After the fibers fractured, the composite lost its capacity to carry additional load and fractured. Gotsis, Pascal K. Glenn Research Center RTOP 510-10-01...

Book excerpt: As fatigue and fracture mechanics approaches are used more often for determining the useful life and/or inspection intervals for complex structures, realization sets-in that all factors are not well known or characterized. Indeed, inherent scatter exists in initial material quality and in material performance. Furthermore, projections of component usage in determination of applied stresses are inexact at best and are subject to much discrepancy between projected and actual usage. Even the models for predicting life contain inherent sources of error based on assumptions and/or empirically fitted parameters. All of these factors need to be accounted for to determine a distribution of potential lives based on combination of the aforementioned variables, as well as other factors. The purpose of this symposium was to create a forum for assessment of the state-of-the-art in incorporating these uncertainties and inherent scatter into systematic probabilistic methods for conducting life assessment.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to establish and demonstrate a methodology for the prediction of the remaining strength and life of polymer-based composite laminates subjected to cyclic and sustained thermomechanical conditions. Conditions to be considered include elevated temperature (in air) and cyclic (fatigue) loading at various stress levels. The approach taken is to construct a simulation of the damage accumulation process and failure mode that controls the remaining strength and life for carbon fiber-reinforced K3B polymer matrix systems. The simulation is based on micromechanical and ply-level models of composite strength that combine the properties, geometry, and arrangement of the constituents to estimate the global strength as a function of those parameters. As applied conditions influence those parameters, those influences are combined to yield estimates of the remaining strength and life (when global strength is reduced to the level of the applied conditions). These predicted values for the remaining strength as a function of the number of fatigue cycles, temperature, and load level are in good agreement with available experimentally measured values.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the application of composites and nanocomposites has been increasing steadily in industries such as aerospace, automotive, marine, and civil engineering. It is among the most complex and crucial aspects of the mechanics of a deformable solid, due to several specific phenomena and analytic factors arising from cyclic loading. The problems are primarily associated with the development of fatigue damage, and the need to assess the cyclic and structural instability of composite and nanocomposite materials. The study of structural strength under cyclic loading has gained much attention, especially in aircraft manufacturing, power engineering, aviation, and rocket technology. Cyclic loading significantly reduces creep-fatigue lifespan during the entire frequency range. It is clear that characteristics such as endurance limit, static creep limits and long-term static strength will not suffice in the design criteria for fatigue life. New aspects have emerged in high-temperature strength - cyclical creep and long-term cyclic strength, leading to the creation of new methods and means of determining the resistance of composites and nanocomposites materials and continuum damage development under cyclic loading to the creation of appropriate physical models. Particularly relevant is the intensification of creep by high-frequency cyclic loading in composite materials, which usually occurs at high temperatures. Most studies in the field of cyclic creep are experimental, and the direct use of number of cycles to define damage model cannot escape the empirical relation that predicts multi-stress level fatigue life well. The book presents new phenomenological cyclic creep – fatigue models for describing the fatigue life and behavior of time-dependent composites and nanocomposites. Since the main difference between the creep process from the fatigue process is that from a physical point of view, the first is quasi-static, and the second is dynamic. Therefore, the functions of creep should reflect the oscillatory nature of the fatigue process. The results are supported by step-by-step practical design examples and will be useful for practicing structural engineers, code developers as well as research and university faculty.
