Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to integrate environmental (thermal and chemical) considerations and probabilistic methods into a life prediction model for corrosion fatigue crack growth. The approach is illustrated through simplified modeling of aluminum alloys with the aid of the MODGRO program for fatigue analysis. Damage is modeled as a stage II fatigue crack by a well-accepted power law. A superposition model is adapted to take into account corrosion effects, and temperature dependance is modeled as an Arrhenius formulation. The cumulative distribution functions for the underlying random variables are assumed, but reflected realistic data. The influence of temperature, of random variables, and sequencing effect of loading spectrum on fatigue life are then investigated.

Book excerpt: With the advent of the 80's there has been an increasing need for analytic and numerical techniques, based on a thorough understanding of microstructural processes, that express in a manner suitable for practicing engineers the reliability of components and structures that are being subjected to degradation situations. Such situations fall within the framework offracture mechanics, fatigue, corrosion fatigue and pitting corrosion. Luckily, such techniques are now being developed and it was felt timely to combine in one volume reports by the leaders in this field who are currently making great strides towards solving these problems. Hence the idea of this monograph was born and I am pleased to be associated both with it and the contributors whose chapters are included in this volume. A very large part of the credit for this monograph must go to the authors who have taken time out from their busy schedules to prepare their submissions. They have all worked diligently over the last few months in order to get their manuscripts to me on time and I sincerely thank them for their help throughout the preparation of this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture and 'slow' crack growth reflect the response of a material (i.e. its microstructure) to the conjoint actions of mechanical and chemical driving forces and are affected by temperature. There is therefore a need for quantitative understanding and modeling of the influences of chemical and thermal environments and of microstructure, in terms of the key internal and external variables, and for their incorporation into design and probabilistic implications. This text, which the author has used in a fracture mechanics course for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, is based on the work of the author's Lehigh University team whose integrative research combined fracture mechanics, surface and electrochemistry, materials science, and probability and statistics to address a range of fracture safety and durability issues on aluminum, ferrous, nickel, and titanium alloys and ceramics. Examples are included to highlight the approach and applicability of the findings in practical durability and reliability problems.

Book excerpt: The papers in this collection cover a diverse range of topics on the topic of fatigue of materials. The editors have grouped the papers into five sections. Sections 1 and 2 contain papers that (i) review the current state of knowledge both related and relevant to the subject of fatigue behavior of materials, and (ii) present new, innovative, and emerging techniques for experimental evaluation of the fatigue behavior. Sections 3 and 4 focus on advanced materials that are used in performance-critical applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, such as the alloys of titanium, nickel, aluminum, and magnesium. Section 5 presents papers relating to other materials of engineering interest, such as iron and steel, polymer, rubber, and composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As fatigue and fracture mechanics approaches are used more often for determining the useful life and/or inspection intervals for complex structures, realization sets-in that all factors are not well known or characterized. Indeed, inherent scatter exists in initial material quality and in material performance. Furthermore, projections of component usage in determination of applied stresses are inexact at best and are subject to much discrepancy between projected and actual usage. Even the models for predicting life contain inherent sources of error based on assumptions and/or empirically fitted parameters. All of these factors need to be accounted for to determine a distribution of potential lives based on combination of the aforementioned variables, as well as other factors. The purpose of this symposium was to create a forum for assessment of the state-of-the-art in incorporating these uncertainties and inherent scatter into systematic probabilistic methods for conducting life assessment.

Book excerpt: The significant variability observed in fatigue crack growth experiments requires application of probabilistic modeling techniques to fatigue analyses. In this work, philosophical and practical concerns for probabilistic modeling are discussed. Several probabilistic fatigue models are derived from the Virkler data and then used to make predictions under a different loading condition. This comparison of predictions demonstrates their sensitivity to the choice of model. In this effort a method for inference of random process parameters and corresponding confidence limits from highly statistically dependent observations is developed.

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the advantages of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is its durability. However, when they are exposed to aggressive environments (e.g., chloride penetration) and cyclic loading, its performance can be significantly affected. Modeling deterioration produced by chloride penetration is useful to ensure optimal levels of serviceability and safety. The main purpose of this book is to propose a new model for lifetime assessment of RC structures subjected to deterioration produced by the combined action of corrosion and fatigue. The formulation of the model is based on a state of the art review on modeling of this kind of deterioration. Furthermore, taking into account the importance of the uncertainty related to the whole deterioration process, this book also presents a stochastic framework for this problem. Finally, several practical examples illustrate the effects of the corrosion-fatigue process in the reduction of life-cycle of RC structures.
