Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the research described in this volume is to examine the behavior of private domestic investment in a sample of seven developing economies: Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Morocco, Turkey, and Zimbabwe. The studies represent a first step toward understanding the investment process in developing countries and the scope for government policy to affect private capital formation. Such issues will become increasingly important in the future as more developing countries try to encourage private investment. Four key issues emerge in the analysis of the determinants of private investment and its role in adjustment programs in developing countries. The first is the impact of changes in the exchange rate; the second major concern is the existence of crowding out of private activity as a result of government borrowing in domestic financial markets through interest rates or quantity rationing. A third and related issue is whether government spending, particularly that on investment, "crowds in" or "crowds out" private capital formation. Fourth, the effects of uncertainty are important in determining the response of private agents to changes in the incentive structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - General, course: RESEARCH PROJECT, language: English, abstract: Private investment is a powerful mean for innovation, economic growth and poverty reduction. Countries with wider and deeper private-sector investments demonstrate accelerated growth (Majeed M.T and Khan S, 2008). Motivated by the concern on the persistent decline in private investment in Zimbabwe since 1980, this study empirically investigated the determinants of private investment in Zimbabwe using time series data for the period 1980-2013. The study employed the OLS estimation criteria. Results indicate that public investment; FDI and GDP are statistically significant in explaining the determinants of private investment in Zimbabwe, while interest rates and inflation are statistically insignificant. The study basically recommends that the government of Zimbabwe, especially through ZimAsset, should promote PPPs, initiate collaborative partnerships between foreign and local investors and create a conducive macroeconomic environment to boost private sector investment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume examines development efforts in sub-Saharan Africa and the role privatization and foreign investment can play. The focus is on African and international capital mobility and recent experience in private investment in contemporary African states. While government in Africa continues to have a hand in economic and political matters, private enterprise, private investment, and market forces are becoming increasingly active. The volume reveals these new directions in development practice in Africa and analyzes the difficulties which government, while well-intended, has created in the past. Contributors from the United States and Africa pose questions and examine scenarios for investment in sub-Saharan Africa. And while no single strategy is agreed upon, they provide overwhelming evidence that it has been the failure of prior central policies which has held these nations back, and that hope for the 1990's lies in the unleashing of the private sector. This work will be of interest to scholars and policy-makers in development economics, international trade and finance, and African studies.

The project experience accumulated by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) provides a basis for analyzing the way in which the investment framework has changed over time in developing countries and the implications for the success and efficiency of foreign direct investment (FDI) ventures. This report discusses the growth of FDI in the world economy and its role in emerging markets, describes the role of IFC in providing policy advice related to FDI (and the IFC's experience as an investor alongside FDI in developing countries), and draws lessons for how to structure FDI projects and policies to attract such investments. Annexes present and describe global FDI flows, FDI projects involving IFC investment and FIAS advisory assignments, and FDI projects examined in preparing this study. Book excerpt: The worst of the ailments distressing the economy of Zimbabwe continue to be sycophantically dubious and characteristically dystopian policies that are still causing malicious effects on private investment and yet private investment is an indisputably powerful means for sustainable economic growth and development. Private investment in Zimbabwe has been significantly low for the past three decades and yet the performance of the economy of Zimbabwe, just like any other economy, relies upon investment; specifically, private investment. This has apparently stimulated much concern, especially to economists; considering the fact that private investment is the backbone of every economy, of which Zimbabwe is not an exception. Motivated by the concern on the persistent retrogressive contribution of private investment to GDP as well as the incessant underwhelming economic growth in Zimbabwe, this study systematically reviews the determinants of private investment in Zimbabwe. Results show that GDP and public investment are the most powerful factors that affect private investment in Zimbabwe. The study recommends attention to be made to all identified factors (that is, GDP, public investment, interest rate, private sector credit and political uncertainty), paying particular attention to the main determinants of private investment, that is GDP and public investment.
