Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the most-read religious and philosophical scholars in the United States comes a collection of creative, thought-provoking fables. Alongside David Bentley Hart’s widely read work in philosophy, theology, and religious studies there has always been the other side of his writing—the fiction, poetry, and literary essays—which has often enjoyed a separate, if equally appreciative, readership. In this his most recent book, these two worlds draw near to one another in a new way. In Prisms, Veils: A Book of Fables, Hart explores the elusive nature of dreams and the enduring power of mythologies. Moving over themes ranging from the beauty of the natural world to the very nature of consciousness itself, each narrative is threaded through with Hart’s deep religious, cultural, and historical knowledge, drawing readers into an expertly woven tapestry of diverse allusions and deep meaning. Prisms, Veils will appeal to fans of Hart’s work, philosophers, theologians, and general readers of fiction. The collection affords a special opportunity to engage with the creative side of Hart, its pages sparkling with bright gems of short fiction that are enchanting, thought-provoking, and imbued with spiritual truth.

Book excerpt: Chemical Zoology, Volume VII, Mollusca, provides zoologists and chemists with an overview of the state of knowledge in chemistry and zoology and an introduction to the existing literature. The treatise is arranged by phyla, an arrangement which seemed most suitable for presenting chemical information of zoological significance and for bringing to the attention of chemists those aspects of biochemical diversity of greatest potential interest. Each section, dealing with a major phylum, is introduced by a discussion of the biology and systematics of the group. This is followed by chapters dealing with various aspects of the biochemistry of the group. This volume contains 14 chapters and begins with a discussion of the molluscan framework. This is followed by separate chapters on shell structure and formation, respiratory proteins, and nitrogen metabolism in molluscs. Subsequent chapters deal with molluscan byssus fibers, chemical embryology, pigments, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism and distribution, endocrinology, anisosmotic and isosmotic cellular regulation, pharmacology, and biochemical ecology.

Book excerpt: Finalist, 2017 Theatre Library Association George Freedley Memorial Award Shortlist, 2019 Prague Quadrennial Best Scenography and Design Publication Award The Director's Prism investigates how and why three of Russia's most innovative directors— Vsevolod Meyerhold, Alexander Tairov, and Sergei Eisenstein—used the fantastical tales of German Romantic writer E. T. A. Hoffmann to reinvent the rules of theatrical practice. Because the rise of the director and the Russian cult of Hoffmann closely coincided, Posner argues, many characteristics we associate with avant-garde theater—subjective perspective, breaking through the fourth wall, activating the spectator as a co-creator—become uniquely legible in the context of this engagement. Posner examines the artistic poetics of Meyerhold's grotesque, Tairov's mime-drama, and Eisenstein's theatrical attraction through production analyses, based on extensive archival research, that challenge the notion of theater as a mirror to life, instead viewing the director as a prism through whom life is refracted. A resource for scholars and practitioners alike, this groundbreaking study provides a fresh, provocative perspective on experimental theater, intercultural borrowings, and the nature of the creative process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ultimate God, being transcendent, is beyond description in literal terms; our knowledge of the divine nature must be indirect. A prime means of such an indirect approach to the divine is through the religious mythologies that have captivated humankind throughout recorded time, and even earlier. After considering the limitations of scientific thinking in dealing with questions of ultimate meaning and value, Anthony O'Hear argues that we should be open to taking religious mythologies seriously. We could, and probably should, see each of these mythologies as partial revelations, each capturing some aspect of the divine. They aim at truth, and should be valued as such, for their own particular insights and traditions of practice, but no single myth can capture the whole truth. Each is necessarily filtered through fallible human imagery and thought. So, while respecting and prioritizing our own favored myth, we should also be open to illumination from myths originating in different times and cultures for their own unique vision and approach.

Book excerpt: Arthur Schopenhauer was the first Western thinker who incorporated thoughts of the Upanishads in his own philosophy. His appreciation for Indian philosophy and culture is quite well known. Presently serious research work is going on in different disciplines in different academic institutions and universities in the West to examine the influence of Indian philosophy and culture in the philosophical thinking of Germany, particularly in relation to Arthur Schopenhauer and vice versa. This book provides a common platform for interaction to the scholars from East and West to express their views on the link between Eastern and Western philosophy. It significantly contributes to a better understanding not only of the connection between Schopenhauer and Indian philosophical systems but also of the increasing interest in this relation. The book includes papers of eminent scholars. The papers shed new light on the relationship between Schopenhauer's philosophy and the different aspects of Indian philosophy and culture, and thus offer a rich source of research material.

Indicted for crimes against the living and the dead, Dante the necromancer has become the most hated man in Sabria. Becoming blind by his enemy’s cruel vengeance only exacerbates his situation. These days, his only comfort is time spent with his student, Anne de Vernase, passing his knowledge on to her. But when her family greatly needs her, she must leave Dante. Then a retired soldier, haunted by powerful dreams, seeks out Dante’s help. Seeing a magical puzzle to solve and a chance to redeem himself, Dante offers his services—even though he senses the man’s plea hides something far more sinister. Soon the blind mage embarks on a mad journey with an unlikely ally beside him. Together they must rescue a former companion from a hellish demise that could raise a destructive cataclysm greater than any war their world has ever seen . . . “An amazingly complex and rewarding story, The Daemon Prince is certain to reward the devoted students of the Collegia Magica trilogy.” —Booklist “Enthralling and not to be missed.” —Kirkus Reviews “This rousing and complex good-against-evil battle concludes Berg’s voluminous quasi-Renaissance epic fantasy trilogy. . . . [Berg’s] insight into the nature of human good and evil, the constantly ebbing and flowing relationships among lovers and friends . . . consistently raises this novel above sword-and-sorcery routine.” —Publishers Weekly “Filled with action and feeling as if it occurs in a Berg version of the Age of Reason; fans will appreciate this stupendous story.” —Alternative Worlds

Book excerpt: Gender Through the Prism of Difference adopts a global, transnational perspective on how race, class, and sexual diversity are central to the study of sex and gender. In contrast with other books in this area--which tend to focus on U.S. or European viewpoints--this wide-ranging anthology features many articles based on research done elsewhere throughout the world. Now in its fifth edition, the book opens with a revised and updated Introduction that sets the stage for understanding gender as a socially constructed experience. Featuring twenty-eight new readings, this edition covers compelling subjects like transgendered people, intersex issues, men and masculinity, sexual and gender violence, disabilities, obesity, reproductive technologies, educational testing, aging and ageism, and Occupy Wall Street.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prism and Lens Making: A Textbook for Optical Glassworkers, Second Edition is a unique compendium of the art and science of the optical working of glass for the production of mirrors, lenses, and prisms. Incorporating minor corrections and a foreword by Professor Walter Welford FRS, this reissue of the 1957 edition provides a wealth of technical information and hands-on guidance gained from a lifetime of experience. Although some of the techniques have been replaced by more modern methods, this classic book is still a valuable source of practical assistance as well as being a pleasure to read. About the Author Frank Twyman was a skilled craftsman in all aspects of optics. He joined Otto Hilger in 1898 to work on the production of simple spectroscopes costing less than £10 each. After the death of Otto Hilger, Twyman became Managing Director of Adam Hilger Ltd., a company known for the finest quality optical and mechanical work. He worked here from 1902 to 1946 and was very concerned with the practical aspects of instrument making; he designed many of the instruments himself and constantly strove to improve the techniques of optical grinding and polishing. In 1916 Twyman and Alfred Green, the foreman of the Hilger optical shops, patented the now-famous prism and lens testing interferometer that bears their names. Twyman also undertook fundamental studies in the annealing process for glass and invented new spectrophotometers and spectrographs.
