Book excerpt: Practical Process Control introduces process control to engineers and technicians unfamiliar with control techniques, providing an understanding of how to actually apply control in a real industrial environment. It avoids analytical treatment of the numerous statistical process control techniques to concentrate on the practical problems involved. A practical approach is taken, making it relevant in virtually all manufacturing and process industries. There is currently no information readily available to practising engineers or students that discusses the real problems and such material is long overdue. - An indispensable guide for all those involved in process control - Includes equipment specification, troubleshooting, system specification and design - Provided with guidelines of HOW TO and HOW NOT TO install process control

Book excerpt: Process control is essential in modern manufacturing. The control system is the eyes, ears, and nervous system of the plant. It senses, decides, and directs the activities of the pumps, valves, motors, and other equipment. The control system handles many routine tasks, freeing up the operator to oversee the operation and handle new situations that arise. Without process control, it would be nearly impossible to efficiently produce commodities like pulp and paper, gasoline, plastic, and pharmaceuticals. Most people learn process control through hands-on plant experience, accompanied by a healthy dose of self-study. This is because textbooks generally address the mathematics of process dynamics and control, but often miss the practical aspects. This easy-to-read book fills the gap by focusing on practical real-world knowledge of process control systems, providing clear and concise examples, and providing practical advice for handling day-to-day maintenance and documentation. The author begins by discussing control terminology, principles, and applications, the information one needs to form a basic understanding of process control. He then explains the differences between discrete, continuous, and batch control, as well as the different control systems, programming languages, and documentation needed for each. To complete the foundation, the author addresses the management of control systems including discussions about maintenance, change management, communications, and documentation. Finally, one chapter introduces advanced control topics such as advanced regulatory control, multivariable control, and neural networks. Whether you are a student of process control, a technician or engineer expanding their skills, or someone in operations, maintenance, sales, support, or management who wants to develop a basic understanding of process control, this book is for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Process planning determines how a product is to be manufactured and is therefore a key element in the manufacturing process. It plays a major part in determining the cost of components and affects all factory activities, company competitiveness, production planning, production efficiency and product quality. It is a crucial link between design and manufacturing. There are several levels of process planning activities. Early in product engineering and development, process planning is responsible for determining the general method of production. The selected general method of production affects the design constraints. In the last stages of design, the designer has to consider ease of manufacturing in order for it to be economic. The part design data is transferred from engineering to manufacturing and process planners develop the detailed work package for manufacturing a part. Dimensions and tolerances are determined for each stage of processing of the workpiece. Process planning determines the sequence of operations and utilization of machine tools. Cutting tools, fixtures, gauges and other accessory tooling are also specified. Feeds, speeds and other parameters of the metal cutting and forming processes are determined.
