Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Australian Agriculture In 1892, the then Minister for Education and Agriculture in South Australia convened a conference of members of Parliament, the editors of the leading papers, agriculturists and educationists, to discuss the best means for promoting agricultural education. The writer was chairman of the committee appointed to draw up a scheme. Among the recommendations adopted by the conference was one affirming the necessity for a text book on Australian agriculture. The duty of preparing such a book was many times urged upon the writer, and he in turn endeavoured to induce others to undertake it; but after nearly twenty years the work remained undone. The author has now attempted to meet the want. The task has proved even greater than was anticipated, for new ground had to be broken with no examples to follow or avoid. In addition, the requirements of at least three classes of readers had to be considered within the limits of one small book. If the writer has not wholly succeeded, his effort may at least stimulate others, and make the way easier for them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture in Canada: Modern Principles of Agriculture Applicable to Canadian Farming to Yield Greater Profit In a country famous for her vast wheat fields and whose chief industry is - and must continue to be for many years - agriculture, the need of a standard work on this important subject by a competent writer is apparent. Of the few Canadian writers with a practical knowledge of farming in Canada, who have attempted to blaze the trail for the newcomer or help the old settler with advice born of long personal experience, none occupy such a pre-eminent position as William Rennie. Unusually successful in all departments of agriculture and with the gift of imparting information on the most prosaic subject in a fascinating manner, his personality was a potent factor in the elevation of farm work to the science of agriculture. By precept and example he enriched farm life in this country, and did much to lift it from the deadly routine which was rapidly depleting the rural population of its young life. The author came into national prominence by winning the first Silver Medal presented by the Agricultural and Arts Association of Ontario for the cleanest and best-managed farm in the province, while his brother, the late Simpson Rennie, who occupied the Rennie homestead in Scarboro (Ont.), won the Gold Medal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture The history of agriculture in New Zealand is a record of great achievement in overcoming many difficulties, for our country, though endowed with a climate very suitable for agriculture, has little naturally fertile soil and much very hilly country. Agriculture in New Zealand was started by the Polynesians, the Maoris and their predecessors, the moa-hunters. After the first white men landed on the shores of New Zealand in 1769 Captain Cook reported the existence of large coastal cropping areas of up to 200 acres in kumara, taro and yam. Considering that the Maoris used only wooden and stone tools this is remark able. Helped by the early missionaries the Maoris were quick to make use of the potato introduced to them first by Captain Cook and later by the whalers. Early in the 19th century the potato had become a major item in their diet and was an article of trade with visiting ships. Maori agriculture continued to develop and reached a high level in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Rotorua districts Where, just prior to the Maori Wars (1860 several thousands of acres of native land were in potatoes, wheat, maize and kumaras. European agriculture in New Zealand was started in 1814 by the Rev. Samuel Marsden at his, the first, mission station in New Zealand at the Bay of Islands. Apart from the mission stations, there was no organised agriculture until after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Organised settlement of Otago took place in 1848 and of Canterbury in 1850. In these provinces the open native tussock grasslands invited grazing and soon pastoral farming on a large scale developed to the Australian pattern. Near the centres of population throughout New Zealand mixed farming developed to supply the needs of the townsfolk. There were, in those days, no special kinds of farming like dairy ing and fruit-growing. Most settlers raised a great variety of crops and livestock, and their wives not only cooked and sewed, but also spun, knitted and churned. Just before the Maori Wars, Auckland, then the largest centre of population, produced more wheat than Canterbury.
