From puppetry to mimes and street theatre, this complex art has utilized all other art forms such as dance, literature, music, painting, sculpture, and architecture. Every aspect of human activity and human culture can be, and has been, incorporated into the creation of theatre. In this Very Short Introduction Marvin Carlson takes us through Ancient Greece and Rome, to Medieval Japan and Europe, to America and beyond, and looks at how the various forms of theatre have been interpreted and enjoyed. Exploring the role that theatre artists play — from the actor and director to the designer and puppet-master, as well as the audience — this is an engaging exploration of what theatre has meant, and still means, to people of all ages at all times. Book Synopsis The Technique of the Drama by : W. T. Price
Download or read book The Technique of the Drama written by W. T. Price and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technique of the Drama: A Statement of the Principles Involved in the Value of Dramatic Material, in the Construction of Plays, and in Dramatic Criticism To set forth at any length in a preface the limitations and qualifications of mere rule and device in dramatic art, would be simply to anticipate the constant warnings against conventionalism and academic fixity that run through this book. The vitality of the drama would soon be exhausted if writers followed rule only and were ignorant of principles or indifferent to them. It would be possible to describe with almost mathematical exactness how certain forms of the drama are built up, particularly those that are fixed or extinct; but it marks a decadence of the drama when at every step you are met with the mandate from the mechanical people - including prompter and scene-shifter - that you are to do this and are not to do that.
