Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1900 to 1924 Spain experienced a stage of vigorous academic freedom and unfettered scientific inquiry that strikingly contrasted with the repressive atmosphere of the periods before and after. Thomas Glick explores this "recovery of science" by focusing on the national discussion provoked by Einstein's trip to Spain in 1923. His visit stimulated a debate on the nature and social value of science that was remarkable in a society so recently awakened to the scientific role in the process of modernization. Einstein's universal appeal created the unlikely occasion for a fascination with science that cut across social classes and previously established domains of discourse. The political Right, which in other countries opposed relativity in the name of "traditional" Newtonian science, backed the new theories with surprising enthusiasm. Engineers, a politically conservative group, contributed much of the rank-and-file support for Einstein; physicians, who tended to the Left, also eagerly embraced his ideas, as did a host of mutually antagonistic political groups, including anarcho-syndicalists and bourgeois Catalan nationalists. Professor Glick's analysis of this multidimensional scientific forum provides an unusual amount of information on science in Spain and an opportunity to contrast the Spaniards' reception of Einstein's work and that of other nations during this historical period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book launches with examples, concrete cases, or political confrontations to explain how to conceive the safeguards at stake. It portrays these as embodying principles requiring particular actions and the implementation of policies. For instance, free speech demands permitting seemingly offensive expression plus promoting a diverse and open public debate. The work scrutinizes specific guaranties, such as those pertaining to asylum, citizenship, abortion, due process, self-determination, or the environment. It presents them as engendering problems peculiar to them. Next, the discussion dissects how precepts, like human rights and democracy, may contingently clash despite their overall commensurability. Finally, it underscores the interconnection of negative, substantive, and national entitlements with their positive, procedural, and international counterparts. Throughout, ruminations on the following questions unfold: How may courts and governments respectively contribute to actualizing the liberties at issue? How do these bear upon social justice? How may ideologically opposed states nonetheless collaborate on them?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a fresh contribution to the political history of science, this book explores the connections between the science policies of three countries that each experienced considerable political upheaval in the twentieth century: Spain, Italy and Argentina. By focussing on these three countries, the contributors are able to present case studies that highlight the characteristics and specificities of the democratic and dictatorial political processes involved in the production of science and technology. The focus on dictatorship presents the opportunity to expand our knowledge -beyond the more extensive literature about science in Nazi Germany and Stalinist USSR -about the level of political involvement of scientists in non-democratic contexts and to what extent they act as politicians in different contexts. Key topics covered include the new forms of organization and institutionalization of science in the twentieth century; the involvement of scientific communities in the governance of science and its institutions; the role of ideology in scientific development; the scientific practices adopted by scientific communities in different contexts; and the characteristics of science and technology produced in these contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we develop step by step the FIRST ALGEBRA OF MAGNITUDES, the specific dyadic algebra for physical quantities, in order to rectify the sloppy hypothesis of «arithmetization» of Physics, normalized by the International System of Units in sections 2.1, 5.2 , 5.4.1 and 5.4.6 of his brochure SI, which is tolerated by a clueless scientific community. With dyadic algebra, full meaning is given to the meanings of the laws, equations and compound units of Physics, a sense that we all neglect today . As a culmination, the «DYSMETRIC» FORECAST is reached, with innumerable and far-reaching implications for the enrichment of physical models and the development of infinite innovations. In this way, the trap of «arithmetizing» Physics in which we all easily fall, even the most reputable and award-winning scientists, is ended. Except for one in the entire history of Physics, which was Newton, the only one who operated with magnitudes through the affinity of physical quantities with the elements of geometry, teaching us that, although Physics is not «arithmetizable», on the other hand it is it can be «geometrized». It seems incredible, but it is a grotesque fact that nowadays no one cares about what is really done when operating with physical magnitudes or what is the full meaning of the composite magnitudes or of the analytical formulations, which underlie all of Physics, for what no one should take a step without first having clarified this knowledge. On the contrary, it turns out that operations apparently as elementary as the multiplication of a meter by a kilogram have no arithmetic explanation, because no one identifies what the multiplier of that product is, which does not multiply numbers, but rather dyads or quantities of length and mass. Despite which, it seems that no one is bothered by such a ridiculous embarrassment. Can one call himself a physicist who cannot rigorously define this simple operation and does not care? Can a science be called Physics that lacks a coherent algebra to operate with its fundamental elements, the quantities of physical phenomena? The truth is that the defect is too gross not to take it into account. All this as a consequence of the fact that the current arithmetic hypothesis that postulates the abelian multiplicative group structure for the magnitudes is impossible. Such a structure is only valid for internal additive laws, it is not valid for external multiplicative laws. Obviously, this situation is shameful and pernicious for Physics, it is unsustainable and must be corrected as soon as possible. The dyadic algebra of magnitudes, in addition to giving meaning to the laws, equations, and compound magnitudes, reveals striking consequences, such as the non-existence of inverse elements of physical units, since heterogeneous multiplicative dyadic operations are not internal composition laws, but external. In turn, it naturally leads to «dysmetry», which makes it possible to represent the infinite physical realms of empty space and which radically transforms the vision of physical constants, incompatible in an absolute sense with «dysmetric» spaces, including the number pi and the speed of light.
