Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heavenly Home: Or, the Employments and Enjoyments of the Saints in Heaven May we not ask whether the very progress of modern natural science, which is the cause of all our earthly conveniences, and which, if rightly used, leads us toward God, has not, by a prostitution to mere carnal ends, had a tendency to cause men to deify human reason, to enthrone intellect, to over rate man's natural powers, to atter his pride, to seek the satisfaction of mere temporal wants, and thus practically to forget the momentous interests and claims of a future and higher world? Behold for a moment the busy whirl of earth, the rush and rivalry of the multitudes in pursuit of the mere interests of time, even to the secularization of holy seasons and places, and then say whether the sub duing powers of another life are felt as they should be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heaven and Hell: Also, the Intermediate State, or World of Spirits; A Relation of Things Heard and Seen To trace the Christian religion in the various revolutions of its progress, from its first civil establishment down to the present times, would be the province of an historian; we shall therefore pass over all the intervening periods of it, to consider the sub ject before us in the way both of scriptural and rational enquiries in relation to ourselves. And here it must be owned, that the belief of all extraordinary or supernatural dispensations is at a very low ebb with us, and that from several assignable causes, two or three of which shall here be noticed. And first, from an undue exaltation of man's natural rational faculties and powers, as the sufficient test of revealed truths; and this gross error has prevailed more among men of human learning for this past century, than perhaps ever before; to which it is owing, that almost every thing in religion has been run into question and controversy, and that a general disbelief of all things supernatural has in a great measure banished faith, and introduced Sadducism amongst us, to the denying of all spiritual visions and apparition of angels as things incredible. Secondly, This doubting and unbelief in things of a spiritual nature has spread to a greater extent among all classes, from an excessive attachment to worldly interest, and the love of money in the trading nations of Christendom, through the vast increase of commerce and navigation in the last two centuries; whereby the affections and pursuits of such great numbers have been so engaged on the side of filthy lucre, as to turn an em ployment, in itself innocent and useful, into the occasion of sin. Hence a sordid avarice, and making haste to be rich by frauds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. His two masterpieces, the Summa Theologiae and Summa contra Gentiles, helped develop the classical systematisation of Latin theology, while as a poet he produced some of the finest eucharistic hymns in the church’s liturgy. The foremost classical proponent of natural theology, Thomas had an immense influence on Western thought, as much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, especially in areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics and political theory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meet for Heaven: A State of Grace Upon Earth the Only Preparation for a State of Glory in Heaven Some Christians have a lofty View of heaven, as the Holy of Holies in God's great creation, and of the high qualifications in grace here that are needed to prepare us for its habitation of holiness, of love, and of peace; but, along with this, they cherish the too common and seductive belief, that death will eject, when it comes to them, not a mere transition and im provement, but something like an entire change on the spiritual and moral condition of their souls. I am led to Show that such an anticipation is not only wrong, but dangerous. Personal Christianity consists, not merely in the adoption of a creed or In an outward profession, but In a habitual looking to Jesus for the grace which the Father hath treasured up in him, in such abundance, for the supply of all our spiritual wants, and for the example how we who are Christians should live in the world. I have accordingly, in the following chap ters, viewed Christ's life upon earth as the example of what our life here ought to be, and Christ now in a state of glory in heaven as the pattern of what we are yet to he. Thus I have attempted to exhibit the Lord Jesus as all and all, both in a state of grace and in a state of glory.
